Tools and Men  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391) 5 years ago

Just reading the title of this topic has already caused many women's eye to roll up into their head. Hopefully out of site of their significant other cause I wrote it, it wasn't his fault and he doesn't deserve to have the look!

You know the look I'm talking about. The one he gets when he comes in carrying a shiny, expensive purchase that makes him almost delerious but he neglected to discuss with you first. Luckily the tool induced delerium we men are subject to acts as a shield against the look but if he got it after you read this topic title, you might want to stop reading and call him an ambulance. To date there have been no look related fatalities reported but there's a first time for everything.

What is it about tools we love so much? Is it that we feel more in control of our world if we have the ability to take it apart, lose a few key parts and put it back together again so that it now makes that satisfying odd sound?

I know I love tools and I would venture to say in actual dollar value, my tools signify a far greater percentage of my net worth than everything else in my house combined. What bothers me though is that I am now in a position where I continually supervise tool useage but rarely ever put my hands on them. I mean my truck is new and under warranty, the house has maintenance people and at work I am a supervisor.

Now that I have every tool I need to do absolutely anything I could ever want to do, I kinda wish I could go back to the days when I did everything with nothing and had far less time to sit around and think about things like this! It's sad really but I have a garage full of tools I don't really need anymore but I still love them.

I take good care of my tools, in fact, the other day I got to use some of them for a few minutes to fix one of them! I put new casters on one of my big mechanics tool boxes. It is a wonderful tool box with four large drawers to hold tools and a large compartment for odd size tools like chain hoist and tire irons. This must be the third or fourth set of casters I've put on this tool box and I noticed that the steel near the casters is stamped "Made in USA June 10, 1976" Wow! That box is thirty one years old and it used to be my father's. It's a Craftsman and it is one of four.

Which reminds me, I need to start shopping around for a large mechanics rolling toolbox. I have a set of wrenches that are used on on large trucks and heavy equipment that go from 1 1/16" to 2 1/2" and they are two long to lay in a drawer. It's sad that they get dusty hanging on the tool box handles with D rings. They deserve a drawer!

Well, my wife has looked over my shoulder and seen the topic title so I better stop now before I get the look! I think she already shot it once at the title, luckily she was behind mr but now I am typing fast so the page will scroll and she won't be able to read about the new tool box!

What do you think?

Why do men love tools?

I know that look! I have been doing it since the day I said "I do" lol! I don't know why men are so obsessed with tools, I was hoping that you knew and that you were going to tell me! all I know is that we have tools everywhere and nothing ever gets fixed and yet, I'm not allowed to touch "the tools" those are a no no! he brags about how well they are constructed for the wear and tear then turns around and tells me to leave them alone because if I don't know what I'm doing I can damage them! lol!

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

Well of course you know I have to take his side on this as he is correct. The fastest way to ruin a good tool is by mishandling or using it for a purpose other than intended! Did you know a $50 specially tempered wrench will shatter if dropped at the precise angle onto a plain concrete floor? What the precise angle is, I'm not sure but an old girlfriend of mine knew it!

myLot reputation of 82/100. elp388 (1846)  5 years ago

I know the precise angle too! I have done that a time or three! LOL! who ever said that craftsman tools are built to last.. never had a woman holding it! LOL!

myLot reputation of 86/100. HighReed1 (881)  5 years ago

Now you know why we always get the tools with a lifetime warranty!

I'm not allowed to touch the tools either. I have my own little 'baby size' hammer and pliers. If I need something else, the job is 'too hard' and I should wait for my husband to do it.

myLot reputation of 82/100. elp388 (1846)  5 years ago

I have my own set of tools too! my hubby bought them for me after I complained about not being able to get his big tool chest open with that big lock on there and no key! he thought that my own set of tools would make a good gift.. for my BIRTHDAY! lol!
now I have a pink hammer, a pink screw driver and a pink and purple set of pliers! of course they fit nicely inside of my Barbie tackle box! lol I am thinking of asking for a pink or purple saw for Christmas.. I'll get that darn lock off of the REAL tools! LOL!

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

LMAO! Don't let Highreed fool you! She can change a water pump or alternator on her vehicle if necessary and knows what tools to use to do it correctly. None of the toolboxes are locked to her and she knows there is only one real rule regarding them, "Put it back where it came from when you're done!"

She is incredibly talented.

myLot reputation of 82/100. elp388 (1846)  5 years ago

WOW! way to go Highreed! *proud look*

heck! when my car makes a strange noise I know how to fix it.. I turn up the radio! it works every time! I never hear the funny noise again! you guys are fixing things the hard way! lol!

Here is my only problem with men and their new toys...umm, tools I mean.
Because I am normally there when he buys them anyways...ha ha
My problem? I am not allowed to play with the new toys. Oh! And he always has to play with the new toys right away.
Ok, I get the new toy thing bringing it home you are like a little kid again and itching to open it up and play with it. But if you have other things that have to be taken care of first...don't walk off and make the wife take care of the other things just because you are tunnel visioned on the shiny new toy.
And please don't get upset at me for calling it a toy. Because that is why I am not allowed to play with them....because...they...are...not...toys. hahahahaha
Yeah right! Just like a kid and their toy...once the new-ness has worn off...I get to play with them then! ha ha

myLot reputation of 82/100. elp388 (1846)  5 years ago

you don't get to play with the durable, built to last tools either?! I thought it was just my hubby that didn't allow me to play with his toys! lol! I can play with the hammer, the screw driver (manual only) and the box cutter.. but I can't play with the drill press, or that thing that helps you make holes that you stick on the end of the drill thingy, the drill, the sander, and I never get to play with the thing-a-ma-bob that tests voltage... basically if it has power cords or batteries I don't get to touch it! lol!

myLot reputation of 34/100. zukepr (11761)  5 years ago

What he doesnt let you play with the new toys?
Oh man! he doesnt know what he is missing.
I have seen from a few men in my life that the ultimate power trip for them is teaching their woman how their new new toys work.
If this ever happens, just remember to they are like a child showing you their artwork.
Smile, nod, say "uh huh" "thats really nice honey" and pretend to be interested until you conveniently remember something else that you need to be doing. LOL

myLot reputation of 34/100. zukepr (11761)  5 years ago

Oh I forgot to mention
If it has a motor with any kind of horsepower, Pretend to be intimidated by its power.
That way when the man plays with his new toy he can still maitain his feeling of masculine superiority.
Dont ever appear to be able to work his toy better than he can. LOL

myLot reputation of 85/100. oneandonemakesix (23975)  5 years ago

Actually my husbands toys are computers and not tools.

And yes I give him that look whenever he used to bring home a computer.

So substitute 'computers' for tools, and I know exactly what you are talking about.

Fortunately for him hes a systems engineer, and keeps them running for me.

Mooch

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

Cat chow anyone? Man, ya'll sure tried to take over this thread didn't you! LMAO

Of course we love our toys and the bigger it is, the more noise it makes and the more it costs, the more we love them! Someday, I'll own my very own backhoe!

myLot reputation of 82/100. elp388 (1846)  5 years ago

and we will know that you got that backhoe when we see you sleeping on the front porch! LOL!

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

Of course I'll be sleeping on the front porch so I can be closer to my new tractor! I would venture to say that the backhoe would have its bucket reached up onto the porch next to me! LOL

JimmyMoog (11)  5 years ago

My dream... *ahem* tool is a backhoe with a trenching tool on the frontside. It's like a giant chainsaw! How can you not love that?

First, my friend...I wish to thank you for the idea of releasing a helium balloon for my Mom...I did feel slightly better after doing so and in no way thought that you were trying to be anything but helpful...

Now, on to the tool thing....I think men love their tools because it brings them to a happy place where they feel like they are in total control of their enviroment....where they can "make" or "repair" or "create something marvelous out of raw materials"...

That is my feelings on the subject...LOL

myLot reputation of 98/100. tinamwhite (1966)   ranked 562 out of 26,920 in people  5 years ago

BTW...I am a master at "the look"!!! LMAO

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

I'm glad the idea helped a bit and I hope you are recovering from your loss. You have my prayers.
I personally own auto mechanics tools, electronics tools, electrical tools, welding tools, carpentry tools, wood shop tools, and many other types as I do a lot of things. Each time I use my tools, they do make me feel good. Especially when I do something like this picture!

If I ask him to fix something..he'll reply with I need this tool to be able to fix that...huh?

and my, we've been only married 15 months and I can't belive of the stuff he has accumulated, and he's not stopping..:)

Most of the tools he bought when I'm not with him cause he cannot stand the look..LOL

myLot reputation of 86/100. HighReed1 (881)  5 years ago

Boy, are you in for a surprise after being married many years!

We have been married 22 years and we need a trailer just for my husband's toys...er tools.

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

LOL just give him time, I'm sure he will amass a tool collection worthy of global recognition! Oh by the way, I need a bigger trailer now to haul my tools!

When we sold our sugar cane farm and retired, we surveyed an acre around the house and that for ourselves. A few years later we decided it might be best to move into town. My husband left me to look for a house, with only ONE stipulation: it MUST have a big shed! After all, he had several sheds on the farm.

We had already decided which area of town, so every week I drove around looking for "for Sale" signs and inspected about 40 houses over the period of a few years. We were in no hurry, but I had very definite ideas about the kitchen and other areas of the house.

Finally, I found the house which was EXACTLY what I wanted - and it had an enormous shed which would easily fit four cars. So I got the house I wanted and hubby got the shed he wanted. He is not a tool maniac. He is quite happy with el cheapo brands (on the farm they often got buried - by accident of course) But is he a hoarder!!!

Would you believe until we sold the pick-up, it was difficult to move in that shed. It has everything. Nothing can ever be thrown away.

For all you ladies who give "the look" about the tools, be thankful. At least they are useful. At least they are looked after. Our shed is full of hoarded rubbish. I pity my sons who'll have to clear it out when we have gone. Enjoy them SK.

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

Hmmm, I bet there are some real treasures in that shed that each have a fascinating story behind them. It's funny the amount of memories and emotions that can be stored in something as innocuous as a tool box. You know, I have a utility pocket knife stored in my tool box that went with me all over Europe, into Africa and was even responsible for saving a man's life one time! How can you put a value on such a tool?

My husband isn't crazy for tools, so I guess I should be thankful.lol .I mean, he likes them and all, and his job requires that he use them, of course, and we have your basic tool box at the house, but he doesn't get a woody when we hit the tool department at Sears... :)

I had a boss who would look for any excuse to go to Home Depot..if I light bulb burned out in the store he would run to HD and be gone for an hour. I was a running joke that if you wanted to find him, just look in the tool dept...

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

Not crazy about tools huh? I'm sure he has his vices though! LOL Home Depot is great, they have a nice tool selection for sure!

Guitars...he gets a little stupid about his guitars...and his is not a cheap obsession...he went from a 200 dollar Oscar Shmidt to a 700 dollar Wechter...what's next? a 1500 Gibson Les Paul?

I shudder to think.....

I have to ask, When you wrote this were you grunting like Tim Allen? LOL
I dont think it is just tools.
I think it is anything shiny or anything with any kind of engine.
In my opinion men are simple minded creatures that are easily distracted by shiney objects or anything with any amount of horsepower.
It doesnt matter if it is a weed eater motor or a drag car engine, men are attracted like moths to a flame. LOL
I think men are attracted to tools because they are a means to get closer to an engine. LOL
Also I think it has to do with most mens need to feel God-like.
If they can create something they feel powerful.
It doesnt matter to them whether it is a overzealous 4th grade science project or that above mentioned drag car engine.
If they can build then they are "God" LOL
I think they also do this to prove in some neandrathalistic way to their woman that they are the provider of things.
This is just my opinions though.
I will freely admit that I am still trying to understand the inner workings of the male mind. LOL

I am glad that I am not the only one that heard Tim Allen in my head grunting out the sounds of his masculinity. hahahaha

myLot reputation of 96/100. brandonknies (193)   ranked 6,511 out of 26,920 in people  5 years ago

hey, messing with engines are fun. especially when it isn't your engine, and if someting is missing, or installed wrong, you can just blame it on them and offer to call them a wrecker. lol. note, this only works when the other person (who owns the engine) helped you do it. if it was just you, you are sol, my friend

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

Well it's good to see that my boy learned a thing or two from his old man! Good to see you boy!

Tim Allen only grunts because he is a wuss and has cahonies the size of tiny shriveled raisins! I feel no need to grunt as I have a 21 inch neck, 54 inch chest, 18 inch biceps and thighs larger than most men's waist! When I am turning wrenches, if you hear me grunt, I hope you're wearing safety glasses cause either the wrench or the object the wrench is latched onto is about to explode like a grenade and send fragments shooting into space!

Tools are wonderful and they help in so many ways. I was a bit anxious to get finished last night and left out a whole paragraph about how women only act like they dislike our tools purchases. Not only do they not dislike our tools but they love to see us get a new one cause they know they get to give us the look for spending money and have the added bonus of giving us the look when we neglect to fix things on the honey do list cause that what the tools were supposedly for!

While some hold the common misconception that there are ego issues involved with tools, the fact is, men collect tools much in the way a woman will collect miniatures and they have a rich history! Just ask my boy BK there! I bet if I opened one of my tool boxes, he could tell you a story about each of those tools, some good, some bad but all the history of my toolbox!

I guess I must be one of the fortunate ones, my husband does not rush out and buy tools, maybe he would if we had the money but we don't....

tee hee so I just sat here and laughed at all the knowing looks and didn't have to give one myself.

I guess that its a guy thing.....they like tools like women like other things, fortunately my 'other thing' is online gaming which my husband just can't understand.

oh i know all about the look. i bought a new ratchet and socket set (metric and standard, nothing fancy) and man did i get the look. 'you don't need those!! you can do it with a pair of pliers!!' she said. yes, i could, but not as well. or as easily. and you can't lose a peice of a pair of pliers and still have them in good enough shape to be able to use them after you find the peice. that is one thing abot sockets. you always are missing the one you need when you need it. therefore you must stop what you are doing, and look for the rascal. maybe it is under your tool box? in a different drawer? or maybe your wife borrowed it to throw at your head the next time you come home with a shiny new tool!!!!

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

LOL, allow me to introduce you to a neat little accessory which is attached to most tool boxes. It's called a hasp and consists of a flat plate connected to the box with a hinge. On the end opposite the hinge is a slot which fits ever so nicely over the piece of metal sticking out the face of the tool box. You might have also noticed the piece sticking out from the face also has a little round hole.

First clean your tools when you are done using them, then count each one and make sure they are all present and accounted for in the tool box. Close the tool box lid and swing the hinged portion of the hasp over the piece sticking out from the face of the tool box. Now insert a pad lock into the hasp and lock it. Then next time you need a tool, it will still be there and you will have a much easier time doing the task at hand, provided of course you didn't lose the key to the tool box in which case you will have to buy a hack saw and a new lock. Don't forget to put the hacksaw in the toolbox before you lock it back up or it will disappear too!

Oh god i know that look i see it all the time, I have a real passion for tool the bigger the better, I set up a building contractors in the UK about 3 years ago. I never do any building work i just sit in an office but i have really got a passion for tools

My 2 car garage contains my car and hundreds of tool some are still in the boxes. My wifes car is relagated to parking on the drive to make room for my Dewalt and Bosch. I alway get moaned at for buying tools and have to expalin why i bought it

For example i come in with a bench dril last saturday that was on sale at my local DIY store and had to give a reason why i bought it. I have run out of good reasons now so i just say in case i need it and havnt got time to go and buy it

myLot reputation of 85/100. SKSOUTH (391)  5 years ago

Welcome fellow tool lover! Obviously you have a sound and stable relationship with your wife, making up for this obvious character deficiency as I have with other things so that you are able to buy tools with such reckless abandon!

Or perhaps she's smarter than you think and she sees your tools as money in the bank, knowing that if she decided to leave you would be forced to sell half of them in order to give her her fair share. IN this way she would be satisfied twice! Once because she got her share of the money and secondly knowing she hit you right where it hurts! Let us hope you have a good and stable relationship!

You are almost to my situation! I cannot get any of my three trucks or my boat into the garage because it is full of tools!
