potty training tips

My son is now 13 months old, wow only 2 months more and I can start potty training him. I'm excited and a bit worried because like you I have no idea where or how to start the training. I have no clues as to what and what's not to do. I'll wait for the more experienced parents here in Mylot to answer you post and maybe I'll get some sound advice from them. Goodluck!(to both of us).

We are going through the same thing. My daughter is 21 months and we are working on potty training. We started when she was 19 months because she would take her diaper off as soon as she peed or pooped. Here is what we have been doing. We got her a little potty, some panties and pull ups. During the day when I'm home with her she wears the panties that way she knows when she pees and poops. Yes, I've had to clean up some messes but that comes with the territory when potty training. Since she is still young I'll take her to the potty about every 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much she's had to drink. While she's sitting on the potty I'll read her a short book. By the time I'm done with the book she has normally peed or pooped.

The hardest part about potty training at such a young age is getting them to tell you when they need to go before they go. My daughter has gradually gotten better with it. She will come and start tugging on my hand when she needs to go potty now. Just watch for the signs very carefully. And don't get disappointed if it doesn't work right away. You are going to need lots of patience. One thing I think is important is that I never let my daughter see any disappointment when she has an accident. I just quietly clean the mess. But I do make a huge deal out of it when she does use the potty. I'm all about positive reinforcement when it comes to potty training. Good luck to ya!

Hi, well a little bit of experience that i have would like to share with you. I would suggest that you start timing her at first, that is at first if you know what her timings for potty are, make her sit on the potty half an hour beofre that, talk to her or make her sitting on it intersting enough so that she knows that shes to stay there. If she does her potty good for you, then repaet the same procedure for a couple of days, till she understands this is where it has to be done. Incase she doesnt wnat to sit and do it there and at times the moment you make her get up, she does it outside the potty! Yes that too happens at times, in that case dont get upset, the same procedure has to be repaeted again and again tillshe understands, a little harsh word tomake her understand that this is where she had to do it, will help the situation too. We're working on potty training our 18 month old right now. The first thing we were told to do, was to just have him sit on the potty with his pants on and everything, so he could get used to it. We did that first, while we were getting him used to pulling his easy ups up and down.

Then once he was used to it, we started taking him and sitting him on the potty every hour or so and leaving him there until he used it. We would sing songs and read books and whatever else he wanted to do. After he uses the potty and we wash up and everything, I make it a big deal and give him a sticker on his reward chart.

Our son talks really well, so he is able to tell us if he has to go in between times we take him. I use the Feel N Learn diapers instead of big boy underwear still, though. We tried to use the big boy underwear, but he didn't like them. He can still feel when he goes in the Feel N Learn's, and we both like them better. If he has an accident, he always says "Uh oh Mommy! I potty in my pants!" I don't get onto him or anything. I just tell him "That's okay! We'll try to make it next time, okay?" And he smiles at me and says okay. He never has an accident two times in a row.

When he goes to bed at night, we use the Easy Ups, because they don't make him so uncomfortable when he has an accident. He still takes it off and brings it to me when he gets out of bed, though.

I have four kids, all successfully potty trained...WHEW! Personally, I think that 14 months is too young to train. My kids were all a lot older. They need to be able to communicate with you when they need to go. At 14 months, you may be able to read her "clues" (grunting, etc), but really, you are the one who is being trained to take her to the potty! Anyway, if you are concerned with the diaper being taken off during naps, you could try onesies that are hard to unsnap, a one-piece jammies or romper on backwards so she can't get it off, or duct tape around the waist of the diaper so she can't undo it.

I would suggest getting a potty training video from the library. There are some good ones out there. She can watch it and so can you. Also, let her go to the bathroom with you, and explain to her what you are doing, and why. Put a potty chair in the bathroom, and let her sit on it with her clothes on it for a while. After several days or weeks, ask her if she wants to try to pee on the potty without her diaper. Praise her like crazy if she does, but don't make a big deal if she doesn't.

It may take quite a while to train her, especially because she is so young. I wouldn't buy pull-ups just yet. They are really expensive, and are a waste of money until you are further along in the potty training process. If you really want something she can take off by herself, invest in some training pants (cloth--like really thick underwear), and some plastic pants to cover them in case of accidents.

Also, I highly recommend NOT training right now if your daughter is in any kind of transition, such as a new babysitter, new house, new baby, etc. I made this mistake twice and it took me over a year to train my boys. I actually quit after a couple of months and tried again when they were ready. If your daughter doesn't pick up on the training within a couple of weeks, she isn't ready. Put it off for another 6 months to a year and try again. Good luck!

Sorry i too in the same confusion and dilamma how to start and how to make my son used to potty,i tried every time but he loves to do it in open space,whether in the corridor and sometimes in the bathe room and iam very worried of his potty training and i wish you all the best and let me know by what method you succeded with your kid in potty training with her,so that i try it out on my son. Well, I think that might be to young even at fifteen months. Personally I think that starting too soon just drags it on. I worked in a daycare center for 5 years and I have the priveledge of working in the potty training room!

When we pushed or we started before there little bladders were ready compared to when we let it happen naturally. Well 9 times out of ten potty training was completed at the same time. and normally around 2 or just after.

Anyways, I have a little one that is a stripper like yours, my resolution is simple pull ups! She feels like a big girl and can go on the potty but if she has a accident its not big deal for anyone.

Oh another tip, I do like to put panty's on so they can get the feel.
