Using certain words |
|
Y'know, I don't mind comments being disallowed if a swear word is used, but twice today, I tried to use pus*y when referring to a cat (George and he rates a nine) I spelt it with both 's's and it was disallowed. Later I tried to use the word a*s when referring to the pronouniation of a word 'dais' and that was disallowed too. I find it a bit irritating that words used in innocence are deemed to violate mylot's terms of use. What does anyone else think?

The software can't tell the difference between a legitimate use of those letters in an innocent context, and somebody being abusive or trying to post obscene material.
The good thing is, if you write 'pus*y' in reference to your cat, I still know exactly what you mean because unlike the filtering software I am human and have common sense. So just keep on rocking those asterisks!

PaulBirkin12 (260) | 3 years ago | Okay fair enough. I assumed it was software doing the filtering and am glad that you have something in place to try to keep things clean. I'm happy to use astericks creatively if it means less obscenities. Keep up the good******g work (sorry - just trying to get used to the '*' key - honest!!

Well it is slightly annoying yes, because sometimes it can seriously mean something un-obscene. But to program something that can figure out when it is obscene or not would take way to long that its fine having to call a pus*y a cat

3. suspenseful (17075) | 3 years ago | That is myLot for you. They fail to see the word in context. There should be a disallow when used improperly, not when it refers to a cat. I guess I cannot quote the title of that Tom Jones Hit, 'What's New Pu--ycat?" or the name of that female pilot on 'Goldfinger." Maybe the ones who check the words, do not have English as their native language, just like the ones at our post office who always deliver the wrong mail.

4. cloudwatcher (3342) | 3 years ago | I do not swear and I object to people swearing, so I was amazed when myLot asked me to change words in my post. I posted a discussion based on the old nursery rhyme "Puxsy Cat, Puxsy Cat, where have you been?" and they wouldn't allow it.
I have read where a word referring to the meatiest part of a chicken has not been allowed in recipes.
I am thankful for myLot's stand against the use of some words. I understand that this would be system-based and would be difficult to differentiate between correct and incorrect use of words, but why doesn't the same rule apply to tagging? Why is it that members can tag another's discussions with obscenities?

|
PaulBirkin12 (260) | 3 years ago | That's an interesting point. I didn't know you could be obscene on the tags. I'd better keep an eye out for that I suppose. Although it is a sad individual who resorts to that kind of thing. The not-allowance of the word pus*y quite surprised me. That, I suppose, could be down to cultural differences. In the UK I don't believe, although we know what it refers to, sometimes, we don't regard it as being as bad as certain other words used.

cloudwatcher (3342) | 3 years ago | A few people have had problems with a member or two stalking their discussions and adding VERY obscene words to their tags. If you do come across any, please report them to myLot.

PaulBirkin12 (260) | 3 years ago | I certainly will, Cloud. So far this has been a pleasant experience, I don't intend one or two meatheads spoil it for me and others. And I've learned how to say 'how are you' in Malaysian thanks to Nurulaainaa. Pop in on the guy, he's looking for people to chat to.
