Heroin use |
|
Over the past couple of years I have noticed a huge surge in the use of heroin amongst not just teens but adults as well. I understand that it is cheap and easy to get and the high is from what I have heard, very pleasant but only lasts a short while. I also know that addiction is almost certain as is the destruction of health and lives. With all that is known about this drug, I still see it's popularity on the rise. I have seen so many lives ruined and ended and families torn apart. With all that is known, I really don't understand what would possess someone to even try something like this. I have not met one person that has a happy story to tell if they live to tell it from using this drug. The percentage of those who do manage to get off from this drug and stay away from it is very very low. A young girl that I used to babysit for got involved with it a year ago. I watched her life slowly fall apart. She lost a good paying job that she had been employed at for several years when she got caught stealing. She had a nice husband and a beautiful baby. She is now divorced and only allowed to see her child on short supervised visits. A couple of months ago she did try to get clean and did very well for a while. She wanted her son back . I can tell she is back into it. What are your thoughts and experiences on this?

1. Flight84 (1762) | 1 year ago | My friend used to date a guy that slowly got addicted to heroin after years of smoking pot. I know his life fell apart and I think he moved away so I'm not sure what he is doing now. Heroin is a dangerous drug and it's sad that people with good lives get caught up in the fleeting pleasurable moments that heroin falsy gives. Like the lady you used to babysit for...good life and it feel apart. It's so sad.

He was a very likeable and smart kid with so much going for him and his life was cut short by some poor choices. His funeral was packed with all his buddies, many of whom are into the same junk. Unfortunately, I don't believe it made as strong of an impact on them as one would hope. they are still using.

2. indium (1398) | 7 months ago | not that i'm in anyway condoning heroin use but in Europe, Heroin is a legally prescribable drug. OK so it's not used that often, although its close cousin, morphine, is one of the standard post op painkillers. the point being that when used properly heroin is actually pretty safe. the reason why it destroys lives is the illegality means that instead of a legal price of $40 a week to maintain a habit it's more like $400 a day. The 1st is achievable by legal means. the 2nd price means that people need to resort to criminally to finance it and the supply id contaminates with all kinds of muck.

sid556 (4818) | 7 months ago | That is very interesting. I did not know that it was legal anywhere. I imagine that if used under a prescription and used properly, it probably has some good benefits. Here in the U.S., it is just a really nasty and destructive drug.

indium (1398) | 7 months ago | when used in it's proper medical context it's about as safe as Tylenol but the illegality of it makes it nasty and destructive. Obviusly there are a lot better things to have as a recreational habit but if it was legal it woudl be a lot safter and much less descructive.

sid556 (4818) | 7 months ago | I don't really think that making it legal would help at all. Unlike pot, which is probably less harmful than drinking when used recreationally, heroin is very dangerous and addictive. Legalizing it for medicinal purposes really would not change things on the street. The people looking to use it recreationally would still find a way....the problem would still be there.

indium (1398) | 7 months ago | It is already legal for medical purposes. I was saying legal full stop. Most of its dangers are due to its illegality. Nicotine is more addictive.

sid556 (4818) | 7 months ago | Just last week a young man that I've known since he was a little kid died of an overdose. I have never tried it but my ex husband was very into it and that is what destroyed our marriage. Yes it is an extremely hard addiction to overcome from what I'm told. It is also becoming more and more popular which is very scary, i think.

sid556 (4818) | 7 months ago | And did you know that when these guys get out of jail, unless they are in jail for a heroin bust, they do not test them for heroin. I know several who have gotten out for being in there for crimes such as breaking & entering, burglury etc....all related to their habit. They have to do random p-tests but the test is for pot. they feel safe doing heroin becuz it gets out of the system much faster and unless someone calls in and rats them out, they don't get tested for it.
