What to do for Niacin flashes? |
| |
| My wife turns so red when she takes Niacin that she quit taking it. The Dr. even checked her heart when she went it. The Niacin decided to take effect after she went in so she just kept getting redder and redder. The nurse said that taking a baby aspirin might help. Others say to take it with food. The only thing she has found to help is to stay still until she feels it flush subsiding. | | | | | |

| | Thanks, I will have her try the smaller dosages spread over the day. The one she is taking now is 500 mg. | | | |

| | Wow! That's a high dosage. Did a Dr. prescribe that? My multi-vitamin says 20 mg is 100% of the daily recommended dosage. Even spread out, 500, that's a lot of niacin at one time. | | | |

| | My wife tried cutting the niacin into four pieces. So far she only tries it at night. The first night she got about as red as before but it didn't last as long. The next times she tried drinking a lot more water and then go to bed. That seems to work. Thanks for suggestion. | | | |

| | I'm very glad I could help. Those of us with flashes need to be there for each other. We need all the suggestions we can get, plus figure out ways to implement on our own, so that we can deal with this problem. I drink milk with medicine because some of us with flashes develop stomach problems for medication, too. But if she's lactose intolerant, of course that won't work. Glad that she figured out how much and a way to do it. Sounds like a smart lady, your wife. Dividing into 4ths must be a challenge. Thanks for best response. Looks like I was the only response. Good thing I joined mylot when I did. There must be other rosacea and pre-r's here besides me. Take care. May both of you be happy and healthy. Peace | | | |

| | So far so good but the milk along with the Niacin may also be helpful. I think she might try 1/2 pill next to see if she can handle it. The Niacin does seem to bring her Cholesterol down where the prescription didn't by itself. | | | |

| | Interesting. The lowest reading I ever had for cholesterol was when I went vegetarian and ate oatmeal. My husbands was really low once just eating oatmeal. I think whole grains in general help to obsorb and kick the stuff out. Take care. | | | |
