Superman vs Batman email this discussion to a friend?

I got in a debate the other night with a friend who doesn't collect comics. It all started with a comment about Batman being a lame character and continued into the Superman vs Batman debate.
Now I have always found Batman to be a better developed character and I would think he would be better to write or draw. I am also a firm believer in that a great writer can make anything happen and make it come off as real. Yes, this means I believe with the right script, Batman can beat Superman.
So I'm interested in what mylot-ers think. Which would be the better character to write, sketch, develope. Do you think that it comes down to a good script and Batman could take Superman or is it a simple The Man of Steel could kick the Dark Knight's arse, no problem.

hello welcome to Mylot! i hope that you like it here.

i think that Superman could take Batman on any day. i love the Superman movies.

Superman - did you know?

Superman is a fictional character and regarded to as the most influential and popular superhero of DC Comics. Created by Canadian-born artist Joe Shuster and American writer Jerry Siegel in 1932 and sold to Detective Comics, Inc. in 1938, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938) and subsequently appeared in various radio serials, television programs, films, newspaper strips, and video games. With a premise that taps into adolescent fantasy, Superman is born Kal-El on the alien planet Krypton, before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by his scientist father moments before the planet's destruction. Adopted and raised by a Kansas farmer and his wife, the child is raised as Clark Kent, and imbued with a strong moral compass. Upon reaching maturity the character develops superhuman abilities, resolving to use these for the benefit of humanity. With the success of his adventures, Superman helped to create the superhero genre and establish its primacy within the American comic book.

Superman is widely considered to be both one of the most famous and popular comic book superheroes of all time, and an American cultural icon.

Of course Superman could "defeat" Batman due to his other-worldly nigh omnipotent powers. I really like Superman comics, but could never really sink my teeth into them. I much prefer the highly developed Batman character which first appeared in Detective comics #27 in 1939- the story was "The Chemical Syndicate" since we're doing time lines... I like Batman because he has no super powers, I even like him so much that I have a tattoo of him on my arm.

the Batman tat is fairly large. I have one more sitting before it's finally finished. when it is I'll put a picture in for you. the Batman is only part of the sleeve-spiderman spawn and a few others are going to be placed in as well.

I like both comic characters, they have made a great league in Justice League Unlimited.

myLot reputation of 69/100. Se7enth (127)   ranked 1 out of 52 in collecting comic books  3 years ago

I loved Justice League Unlimited. I have always felt that the creators for the show did an amazing job of capturing the best parts of the comic characters. I do think they both play well off each other. The dark and light side of DC heroes.

Thanks for the feedback.

Superman!

Batman is a spoiled rich guy with a sidekick. He bosses Alfred around and has all sorts of things at his disposal and still doesn't always win. Superman may not be violent but he's got that quiet calm about him and he acts, not pows, whams, and oofs.

Batman may be a bully but in a fight, Superman would show all his martial arts skill and beat Batman AND Robin up. You know in your heart it is true.:)

And when did Superman get martial arts skill?

myLot reputation of 99/100. wotfpatty (1290)   ranked 7 out of 52 in collecting comic books  3 years ago

Superman doesn't brag. He keeps his skills to himself but you have to know that he can defend himself if need be. He just uses his other powers, of which he has many, to non violently stop crime. Sheesh, you should now this! lol.

nevaul (78)   ranked 27 out of 52 in collecting comic books  3 years ago

Superman isn't trained in martial arts really. At best, he would have minor training in boxing, possibly, but for the most part, Superman's hand to hand fighting skills is street fighting skills + years of experience from fighting itself.

As has been shown in issues where Superman has lost his powers, he's not above grabbing a chair or some nearby scrap of something and using it as a club, as well as with powers as he's thrown/swung cars, trees and other various heavy objects at other heavy hitters he's faught. All in all, when labing a style to Superman's hand to hand, it's just pure street fighting.

I love superman!

He loves me too. Do you? LOL.

I think superman is a great lover of peace. And a great lover for me too. Hehehe. I am sad that the actor, in superman's role, died.

Batman can always return, but I can't accept him. LOL. I do not love black clothes that much. I think what superman wears is what attacted me too. LOL.

God bless!

I think that Superman is a great representaion of peace, especially from the comics. I also think Batman is a great represention of the world we live in today.

Thanks for adding in.

I defintaely think batwman is better. The problem with Superman is that he IS invinceable. Batman is simply a better-written character because of his internal character. Perhaps Batman could beat Superman if Superman developed an overconfidence and thus became fallible.

myLot reputation of 69/100. Se7enth (127)   ranked 1 out of 52 in collecting comic books  3 years ago

I believe that you are dead on with your comment. Then again, I also believe anything can come across as feasiable with a good writer.

I never would have believed that they could bring back Bucky Barnes until Ed Brubaker took over writing Captain America. Brought him back from the dead and made him in interesting character as Winter Soldier.

I also think Batman defeating Superman would also be a much more interesting story to tell.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Has much as I hate Batman, I would still love to give the nod to him in this fight. If not for any other reason than I hate Superman more than I hate Batman.

But with Supermans weakness to kryptonite being downplayed nowanddays, Batman gets the floor mopped with him. Now if kryptonite still effected supes the same way it used to, then Batman has a fighting chance. I mean he's got to be one, if not the only, superhero who routinley carries kryptonite around with him.

myLot reputation of 69/100. Se7enth (127)   ranked 1 out of 52 in collecting comic books  3 years ago

I don't hate either character but I like the idea that any writer can pull you into a story to make you believe that it's possible for Batman to win. I also like the fact that Batman has been built up over the year to have planned for anything. (It reminds me of Marvel's Black Panther has a plan to take out Galactus if necessary.) In the back of Alex Ross' Mythology, there is an 8 page story of Batman still carrying the Kryptonite ring just in case Brainiac or Luthor takes control of the man of steel. Good Stuff and thanks for your thoughts.

I love both Batman and Superman. As far as who would win in a fight, it would depend on the circumstances of the fight. If it just....... started. Chances are that Superman would win if it came down to a strait fisticuffs brawl. However, what most people, especially those who've never read any of the comics, don't realize, is that Batman has always been the ultimate strategist among DC heros. The only characters in the DC universe who have even come close to planning ahead as much as Batman does would be Ras Al Gul, considered to be Batman real Arch Nemisis these days, and Deathstroke the Terminator(assassin for hire character).

To really understand this, I have to bring up a storyline done in the Justice League of America comic series called "The Tower of Bable". During this time, each of the Justice League members at that time(Flash, Wounder Woman, Aquaman, Plastic Man, Superman, Martian Manhunter and Green Laturn) had all been attacked seperately and nutrilized in a manner where the attack more or less put them all on the shelf, but didn't kill them. It was later found out that these attacks were being orchestrated by Ras Al Gul who had hacked the JLA watchtower computers and stole these methods from files that Batman himself had created in secret.

From what I remember...
Flash: Was given a toxin that when hypermotabolized formed into a superspeed form of epoleptic seziures(forgive spelling errors as it's just before bed time for me, very tired).

Green Latern: Was hypnotized into thinking he wasn't wearing his ring when sleeping as he feared anything he dreamed or more to the point had a nightmare of, the ring might make real. In this case, it worked and Green Lantern woke up blind and deaf if I recall.

Martian Manhunter: Was coated with a magnesium compound form of powder which when exposed to air/oxygen, caused the magnesium to combust into flames continuously. Fire ends up taking away all of the Martian Manhunters powers by the way and could end up killing him as it would any other normal human.

Aquaman: Was either chemically or hypnotically given the condition of Hydrophobia. While Aquaman can stay above water for long periods of time, if he were to stay out of water indefinately, he would dry out and die just like any other marine life form.

Wounder Woman and Plastic Man: Can't remember.

And Superman: While most would think green kryptonite, that wouldn't be the case. He was actually hit was a scientific weapon of some sort, which while I think it was focused through some form of kryptonite(not certain), fired a beam which more or less turned his skin and organs transluscent(descriptively anyhow) and he began radiating massive ammounts of Solar Radiation that he absorbs on a daily basis as they're what fuel his powers. Such radiation was so deadly to most of the others still in commition that Superman had to quarenteen himself so as not to give anyone radiation poisoning.

So, my main point being. If it were just a simple brawl, sure, Superman to mop the floor with Batman, as he would with most anyone else. However, Batman's really not the type who would go for a simple brawl against anyone above street thug level. As the character who's reguarded as the most dangerous man(man meaning super with no powers) on the planet as well as the most overall intelligent of the group by leaps and bounds, Batman would always have a plan, especially if he knew a fight was coming.

To put it best, I take a quote directly from Superman comics where Clark and Lois went to a Holloween Costume party. Lois was dressed as Robin, and Clark as Batman.

Clark/Superman: He's going to kill me for this you know.
Lois: Oh don't be silly, no one can kill you.
Clark/Superman: Oh, if anyone on this planet knows how, it's him.

First off, thanks for the reply.

Second, That's exactly the way I feel about it. The greatest stories done with Batman is where he plays on being a strategist and knowing his enemies. Grant Morrison had a good grip on who Batman was and what he was capable of doing. Tower of Bable was a wonderful tale that showed Batman not just as a fighter, but as a thinker. Not having any powers, he uses he knowledge and doesn't ever just charge into a situation. Yes, Superman would take The Dark Knight in a one on one brawl, but a talented writer can make anything seem real.

I love the last line about "Oh, if anyone on this planet knows how, it's him." That pretty much says it all.
