You can try but I don't think it is the right way. I started potty training when I noticed my child was getting interested in seeing us going to the toilet, and they wanted too themselves

My son is 18 months old, and I've just started working with him on potty training. He was ready for it, though. Some kids aren't. My son was already telling us when he was going to the bathroom, and taking his diaper off immediately when he used the bathroom. If your son isn't ready to start potty training, don't rush him into it. Some kids (especially boys) aren't ready until they are well over 2 years old.

If you do think your baby is ready, be consistent. That's the main thing. Make sure you take him and put him on the potty every 45 minutes or hour or however long. Make it a big deal when he goes in the big boy potty, but don't make it a big deal if he doesn't make it. Pullups.com has some other great tips, too.

Hi, i think that your child is ready for potty training as i had started my kids a little earlier than this, as soon as they were ready to sit on their own. It does take a little time and lots of patience and things will not be so easy at first, but then nothing comes easy in life, isnt it, but eventually they will learn. At first what you can try out is to make them sit on the potty to make them familiar with their new seat, and learn to like it and should not be a struggle for them . Secondly if you already have a set time and know when they are going to do their potty, make them sit on the pot, 10 min beofre that, so that they gradually learn they have no other place, but this to sit on and do it. At first they will resist, but they will learn, be patient. You can keep them distracted or give their favourite toy while they are sitting on it, so that they dont cry much. This exercise should be repeated daily for the routine to set in too, at a particur fixed time, hope this helps.

There is no best age really. 1 1/2 is quite early though. Most children don't have the understanding for it at that age. But if you think your child will manage then it won't hurt to try. Don't force him to do it if he's not ready. It's one of those things that will happen when the child wants it to. My 2 year old will sit on a potty and not do anything, my 7 year old never sat on a potty and didn't start controlling his bladder until he was 4. There used to be an average age of potty training but now I think "professionals" have changed their minds because there is such a wide range of ages.
As I say, if you think your son will manage then try him but if he isn't interested, don't try too hard because that might put him off.
You can get some fun potties which might help. They can be expensive though. There is a Fisher Price potty which is shaped just like a toilet with a flush and everything. I think it's about £30 which is a lot to spend on a potty but I suppose it depends how determined you are and how easy or difficult it is to get him interested.

There is no age that is right for all chilren. A child is ready to start potty training when he recognizes that his diaper is wet or asks to be changed, takes an interest in using the potty or someone else, like a parent or sibling using the potty and can sit unsupported on the toilet or potty chair. If you start too early it will be a waste of time and possibly make it harder in the long run. Watch for the signs of readiness before you potty train, and it will be much easier for you and your child.
