DOS for grampas |
|
Yes, sad but true anyway. That little squirmy bundle of joy you so proudly packed home from the hospital, unfortunately did not come home with any instructions on how to achieve tjhe most, with no heart ache along the way. Either that or those cranky nurses that inflicted so much pain in child birth, or if you had a section, they just had to drag you off to potty within minutes of your arrival in a real room on the ward... That after having the whole blinkin' world staring at your err, most delicate areas for God only knows how long... See, I'm 50 and been there before. Well not all the way. I am happily a male. But the men can tell you girls, keeping you happy and focused on the good things, was next to impossible. And the pain is only a distant memory after the baby is snuggled in your arms too. NO???? All the old grammas said that to my wife. You mean all that laughing wasn't just in fun? There could have been some mean spirited stuff too? (He says with a grin) Well fear not ladies! Because of one of life's little jokes, I a proud Poppa to several grandchildren, and also parenting one of them. And a cute little tyke he is indeed. Three and 1/4 years old, and he WILL NOT even sit on the potty. He has done it, but now, he won't even go near the thing. Not on the potty seat on the toilet....not on portapotty....nothing. Begging, pleading, bribing, coaxing. Nothing is working. So we let him be for a bit. We try to explain that he can go to play school if he can wear big boy pants....N O T H I N G ... He's makin' me nuts and I can't find the damn instruction manual for him!!!It's those nurses up at the hospital. They took it you know. But it's like the program disc for the computer, if you don't have the right serial number, the program doesn't work. So I can't even upgrade the software package on him! So I need someone who's got a DOS manual (diapers onto shorts). Have you got one for stubborn little 3 year old boys? Can I borrow it?

1. deebomb (9025) | 3 years ago | Hehe Grandpa I know and feel your pain I had one of those too. What you got to do is make a game of it. Put some cheeros or something simulair in that potty. then when you go you teach him to hit the target. Sort of make a game of the job. That will be easier for you being a grampa with the same equipment.

freebc (1501) | 3 years ago | I have bee reluctant to do this one because I'm not sure enough about his aimer.
I'm not really able to clean up the misses when targeting may be off.
I guess I will have to try that sooner or later....
Thanks...

mtdewgurl74 (10363) | 3 years ago | I know it might sound crazy but have you concidered the bathtub or shower with a bucket in it to help with the target practice? That way he is in the shower with the curtain pulled so aiming wouldn't be as messy? My husbands oldest sister used to set her son on the toilet to pee so that he wouldn't make a mess and she made him sit down to pee till he was 7 and started school. But if he peed on the seat at home he would have to clean the whole bathroom espeically if he forgot to lift the lid. She was strick..I know earlier you said that the sound of his crying got on your last nerve and you had to go outside. It sounds as though grandpa needs a much needed break from babysitting I know you love him with all your heart, but you need a break. Is there anyone that can help you? family, friend, someone? My mom was at whits end with my little sis and I took her for some of June and almost all of July except for 4 days to help give her a needed break even a few hours would help. Do you do play dates? If not, maybe you should try it out, Or maybe even start a group about grandparents raising their granchildren that way you can have like a support group and maybe get some play dates out of that. Put flyers up about it maybe. My mom used to say us kids practically raised ourselves and that we were no problem in raising we minded and always were happy to play or watch television she says now days raising a child is almost next to impossible without help and getting a break. My youngeest sister in law says that breaks are what makes a great parent continue to be a great parent. So if they were someone to help even once a week for a few hours it would be something and something to look forward to each week. I am sorry you are having trouble right now. Good luck.

2. njrealestategirl (287) | 3 years ago | I'm in the middle of training my 2 1/2 year old too. I bribed him with a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse ball! It worked - somewhat - he'd still rather take a poop in his underwear but at least the pee part we got downpat. Even wakes up dry in his pull-ups overnight. From my own experience, you can force them, bribe them or pay them to go on the potty. He'll do it when he's ready (I'm sure by kindergarten he should be trained) LOL!! The cheerio aiming I did with my oldest! They even sell pee targets but the cheerios are much cheaper. He may never eat cheerios again but at least you won't be buying diapers!! Good Luck!!

3. mfpsassy (1181) | 3 years ago | lolol sorry but I thought we already had this little chat? I told you a good pair of earplugs. I wonder if fruitloops would entice him, they are more colorful than cheerios. Kids usually train in their own time. But you have to be consistant. Every half an hour to an hour a trip to the bathroom. Be sure to put in those earplugs though

mtdewgurl74 (10363) | 3 years ago | I just hope using a cereal will not have them trying to fish themout of the toilet when you aren't looking which can happen and also those little cereals are hard to flush sometimes. Being consistent is the key it helps in training those little bladders. One thing we found out from my sister in law she let her son choose his own little undies and they were his favorites and she would say lets go potty you don't want to get your undies wet do you. That spiderman would be disappointed and when he had a good day she would give him little treats. She tried the whole spanking thing didn't work the treats did. A bag of tootsie rolls goes a long way.

freebc (1501) | 3 years ago | We did have this discussion. But on this planet, the one thing that will throw me into hateful tyrade is that noise of a crying child.
I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT STAND THAT NOISE!!! Not even for one minute.
Jason was tired tonight and wanted gramma. That was about 1 hour before she got home.
He ended up on gramma's bed to wait for her and I ended up outside before that noise made me break something. I nearly go psycotic with that noise.
I CANNOT STAND THAT NOISE! In fact, I'm sure the reason adult male bears kill their own young is because of that noise made by whiney youngsters.
They don't make ear plugs good enough for me because I know it is still happening.

4. mtdewgurl74 (10363) | 3 years ago | My mother adopted my brothers daughter straight from the hospital my mom is the first one to hold her. Thing is after having eight kids of her own and them grown and gone she was in for a nice surprise with my little (sis)niece. She was totally different then us my mom said and she said she needed a book to help with this one. Who is now just turned 6 years old in June. She was so hard to potty train she was 5 and we were bribing, begging, for her not to potty in her pants. It was like being tortured..for us. At first nothing worked but then We asked her what she would really want and we would tell her if she could go without any accidents for a few days she would get it. We made a game of it sometimes saying we would race he to the potty which worked because she just thoght it hilarious that she would beat us there It worked for the peeing but the pooping part was the hardest..thought we would never get her tained in that area. She would refuse to get on certain toilets especially those that flushed themselves and those porty pots she just downright refused to use. It took alot of people to actually get her trained as they say it takes a village to raise a child. well for us it took a holler full of people. She occasionally still has an accident but they are accidents. But she is finally trained. Give him time he will do it when he is ready really. Forcing it to happen doesn't help alot it just puts strain in the child and threatening them like threatening to swat their behinds doesn't work and can actually have the opposite desired effect.. So making a game of it is possibly the best bet. I wish you luck and hope all goes well and maybe by the time school starts he will be ready and you will finally get a rest..Wish I had that manual I owuld gladly give it to you. Have you tried videos on potty training or even books or the elmo goes potty doll? We give my sister a book to read while sitting on the potty. So please have patience I thought my mom was going to have stroke or pull herself bald before my little sis got trained. heres a link that might or might not help.. http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geu_IcasZGRVcB4R9XNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTExajZnYmVjBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDNQRjb2xvA2FjMgR2dGlkAwRsA1dTMQ--/SIG=142ghof8v/EXP=1187494812/**http%3a//www.parents.com/parents/story.jsp%3fstoryid=/templatedata/hk/story/data/AB0804PottyTraining08232004.xml well good luck.

mfpsassy (1181) | 3 years ago | Good point about the cereal scratch that idea YUCK. I like the idea about the undies though.
| |
|
|
mtdewgurl74 (10363) | 3 years ago | I have seen that if you start referring to them as your big boy or girl instead of mommas baby girl/boy it does make them feel like a big kids and if you make a big deal of letting them pick out undies since they are now big kids and they are excited and choose their favorites you will have a little better success at them keeping them drier and them using the potty more because they don't want to wet on their favorite undies/panties. And usually between 15-30 minutes after drinking something they have to tinkle so it is the best bet to take them after drinking something and make a game of it also the funner it is for them the better. also ready their favorite story to them while they are on the potty is good esecially if your number 2 training them. have them run and choose a story or have a few already in their for them and even a little drawinf board something to take their mind off what they are doing because kids get bored easy and so they are always wanting to hop off the toilet before they are done and end up having a accident. And giving a child clapping and praise when they do it no matter how frazzled you are is good to and letting them hear praise for it from others is good to and maybe getting a little homemade certificate for not having an accident that day or getting a treat also works wonders. The more praise the child gets the better his/her confidence and possibly the faster they train. I actually bought my little sister one of those video nows and some disks when she went a week with only 2 accidents and she was so happy that everytime she had to potty she wanted to take it in there and watch it while on the potty and since the disk run from 20-30 minutes long it was great for her. It w2orked thanfully and that is how she got herself a big kids swimming pool this year. So making promises and foillowing though with them is good for the kids also.

freebc (1501) | 3 years ago | Checked that link thank you. But I'm not buying for any money.
I'm cheap. I don't buy promises anymore.

| 5. randigayle (7) | 3 years ago | I have no experience in this what-so-ever because my daughter is only 9 months old but thank goodness that she is female and will not pee all over the walls when trying to teach her lol .. but I did want to write and tell you that I appreciate what you are doing for your grandson. I do not know the circumstances in which you have him but you are doing a great thing. And my daughter didn't come with an instruction manual either:( but my mom is helping me out with learning new things to do. She showed my sister how to properly bathe my nephew and that helped me out a lot because 3 months later here came my daughter so it's nice to have some help. But like I said, I know nothing about the potty training stuff and boy do I dread it. I would say that you have done everything because any kid would take a bribe if it was good enough lol I would have anyways.

njrealestategirl (287) | 3 years ago | I know you are not at that stage yet but I will tell you that I have 2 boys and a girl. My girl is in the middle. Anyway, my oldest son trained the best but what I dreaded most with my daughter was the trips to the potty in public places!! Still it grosses me out. With my boys, I just held them in the air and they shot their pee right into the toilet with touching anything. (Somehow managed never to be out with them when they had to poop). With my daughter even that portable potty seat disgusted me because she still had to sit down and her hands would move around and touch the dreadful public toilet bowl! Gross!! I still do it to this day (she's 4 1/2) I hold her up over the bowl (be it pee or poop) and she does it airborne. I know you are nowhere near this stage but I think its worse for a girl.

freebc (1501) | 3 years ago | Dear Ray of Sunshine,
Thank you for the kind words of hope. I am finding the fact that my daughter is spayed, to be a greater relief than your words of future hope...
I believe if I had two to deal with as old and cranky as I seem to have become, I would probably have to commit Hiri Kiri with a butter knife or a pointy stick or something.
(The last time I said that, being a joke, my wife was going to take away my Genuine Leatherman. To which I said "over my dead body!" She seemed willing to make it happen at that point though....)
Anyway, I'm sure it won't be long before Jason reactivates his interest in training and that this is a 'phase' of some sort. God I hope so.
Is there a bunch of ladies that are part of a prayer chain that could include jason and the potty as part of it? Please????

slickcut (6010) | 3 years ago | Ha ha your funny freebc.I had 3 boys and those little guys are tough believe me..The girls how ever are pretty easy when they are little, they gain their power as they age..Thats the only time those little fellows have any power is when they are small you know, then they get a wife and she seems to do a better job of taming them..You gotta love em!
| |
|
|
freebc (1501) | 3 years ago | I love him as you may have gathered, but in loving him, I always hated this age.
But now that I'm parenting AGAIN, I am doing all the things I was done with...I thought anyway.
I figured I would never have to change another poopy bum again. Uhh...WRONG!
Little fart is costing us lots in diapers and wipes. In the olden days when I did it the first time? We used cloth diapers, rubber pants and wash clothes.
You can't even buy cloth anymore. Mind you, I would have to learn how to fold the kites all over again and I have forgotten that art.
You are praying for me though right? And your ladies in the chain? They aren't laughing too hard at this are they? The last thing I want is to be revenge for all malehood's ills. 8]

7. miamilady (2498) | 3 years ago | Unfortunately, sometimes potty training does become a power struggle. I was lucky with my boy. It went fairly well.
I think I used some unconventional methods though. It was a combination of letting him run around but (or is it buck?) naked and I also had him wear boxers instead of training pants.
My feeling was that the boxers would feel more like going free and less like diapers.
It was summer and at a time when he was playing in the kiddie pool and I think it just came naturally to him.
The one wierd thing was that when he had to actually sit. He was kind of scared, so I had to accompany him to the bathroom. I think he thought he might go down the toilet like the other stuff did. I'm not sure exactly.
I potty trained him the summer before pre-school, as you seem to be trying to do.
I would say that for me, our success in potty training was more about luck than it was about parenting skills.
Good luck and take care.
PS I'm still trying to find my instruction manual too. Been looking for 14 years. Still can't find it!

8. arkaf61 (5728) | 3 years ago | LOL the most important things in life never come with an instructions manual:):):)
There seems to be a tendency for little boys to take a bit more time to get trained than girls, at least in the aspect,so maybe you just need to wait a bit more. IN my school there are always quite a few kindergartens that bring diapers in the beginning but most of them tend to "loose" them after a bit - specially because they see the other kids and want to copy them.
Don't worry, it will come in time.
As for the manual.... LOL good luck, I never found any of the important ones:)
| |
| |
|
|
freebc (1501) | 3 years ago | I think the simplest item that comes with a manual is a crock pot. Or maybe a rice cooker.
But the thing you really need one for is a child, and dang it! I can't find it! 8D
| |
|
|
arkaf61 (5728) | 3 years ago | hehehe I know:) I'm still looking for one and my kids are already 14 and 17! It would come handy often but no, someone just wants to complicate things for us heheheh There's a few other things in life that I would like to have a manual for, but they don't have those too. THe rice cooker I could figure out how to work with it without a manual, but life itself...kids... there is definitely a need for that manual:)
