car seats |

my sister in law, does not think she has to keep her five year old in a car seat, and instead just lets him sit in a regular seat belt. i have told her that she needs to put him in a car seat, because it's the law. but she says that he refuses to sit and one. I am so annoyed by this. this is for the safety of the child, so who cares if he refuses. i got so annoyed that i threatened to call the authorities on her. she in turn got mad at me and has not come over with her kids anymore. i am not wrong here, and yet now she's telling my family members that i am trying to cause trouble for her and her family.

ramipalo (572) | 3 years ago | i did not want to report her, but she wouldn't even consider putting him in a carseat. just because he doesn't like it. i can't have her continue driving him around like that. she's even let him sit in the front seat. she says she's not planning on speeding, and getting into an accident. but who plans on getting in an accident. it's ridiculous. i just wanted to protect him.

OreoCookie3 (18826) | 3 years ago | OMG! Now I have heard everything! No one PLANS to have an accident! You don't have to drive fast to get hit! Does she have DUMB written on her forehead or something???? It's going to be way too late for crying WHEN there is a collision and that child is severely injured or killed. My best friend's daughter was killed this year by a drunk driver. She was driving safely and had her seat belt on and she was killed! The girl was just 18 years old and she is now dead... that could happen to your sister and that child could suffer for not being safe.
Once something so tragic happens it is all over but for the crying.

2. sunshine4 (6288) | 3 years ago | I think that a lot of parents are like your sister in law. Especially those who have had kids that were out of car seats when they were 4. My 3 boys were all out of car seats when they hit 4 yrs old. It wasn't the law then. I can see your SIL's point, but you are right. It is the law.

3. Laurla98 (529) | 3 years ago | I'm not going to disagree with you here. My daughter turns six in December and is still in a car seat. Very rarely will I let her sit out of her car seat and even then she's sitting between her car seat and my 9 month olds car seat. However, by law in Utah...they don't have to sit in a car seat after the age of 5. They have tried over and over again to pass a law up to 7 or 8 I think, but it never passes. Hopefully the family she is talking to will see that you are just looking out for your nephew. Sounds like she needs to look past what your telling her and look at WHY your telling her. Also sounds like she's letting your nephew have a little too much control.

ramipalo (572) | 3 years ago | she's upset, and i can't believe she's telling people that i am causing trouble for her. i just want my nephew to be safe. that is what's important to me. he's too little to be sitting in the car with just the regular seat belt worn improperly. the whole thing bugs me. i did not want to report her, i really didn't but i couldn't live with myself if something happened to that little boy and i did nothing about it.

4. wiccania (2819) | 3 years ago | At the very least, the child needs to be in a booster seat, unless he's tall enough to ride without one. Which isn't likely. My son has both a car seat and a booster seat. We vary the use depending on what all we're doing.

ramipalo (572) | 3 years ago | he's been out of a carseat since he was 4. and i completely disagree with it. she doesn't like to argue with him, and finally gave into the no carseat thing when she had trouble getting him to sit in it. she would try and he would fight her on it. i understand that it can be hard, but he's old enough to be talked into it. i tell my daughter she has to sit in her booster seat, because it's the law and the cops will come give us a ticket. she knows better than to even request to sit in just the seat.

5. kimberlyjt (939) | 3 years ago | she needs to be putting the child in a booster seat, at least the one where it is just the bottom part of a booster seat; like at resturants. she is being neglectful and not listening, it is clearly stated on all packages of car seats what the appropriate weight and height should be. my 5 year old is in a booster seat. this law has been in effect for several years, she should know better. if i knew someone who was not properly buckling their children in the vehicle i would report them.

ramipalo (572) | 3 years ago | that's a good idea. i haven't seen this fancier car seat, but i will mention it to my brother. i didn't mean to anger her, i just want the best for my nephew. i couldn't go on knowing that he was riding in the car in such an unsafe way. i have young children and i could never risk their safety like that. but that's a good idea, he would really love a race car seat. maybe i will even buy it for him. i have seen the trouble she used to have getting him to stay in his seat. i even saw her let him ride in the car with no seat belt at all. that is were i told myself, i had to speak up. i couldn't just sit back and wait for her to wise up.

7. ivyoon (275) | 3 years ago | Wow. Um- just because he doesn't like being in a car seat doesn't mean that it's not what's best for him. (Not even to mention that it is the law). If your sil is this quick to give him wants at his age, just imagine what the consequences could be in the future. She is showing her son that he can get whatever he wants from her just by refusing to do what she says or by demanding what he wants. Look out. This kid's going to be quite a handful in the future. It amazes me that parents are willing to risk the lives of their children rather than hear them whine about things. I'm disgusted.

crazed_moma (873) | 3 years ago | Very good point Ivy! It doesn't sound like she's the adult in this situation. I supose if she gets pulled over and gets a ticket or heaven forbid gets into an accident she'll wish she'd listened to you!

8. Calais (7038) | 3 years ago | Who's the boss the mother or the child, I think that she needs to use a bit of authority and put him in the car seat..The standard car seat belts are made for adults, when usung a car seat it is safe, dosnt she care about the safety of her child...As long as you can say that you tried, god forbid anything should happen...

9. samtaylorskykierajen (5847) | 3 years ago | I don't like the car seat law as I don't see how them sitting in a booster seat that only raises them up is really going to save them since all it is, is a seat that raises them higher to look out the window with the seat belt on them the same as if they were in a seat . But I agree with you completely, It is the law and weather or not we agree with it, we have to abide what they say . Just because we don't agree with the law does not make us right, there is a reason why they feel this is necessariy and who would want to risk the life of their child to prove they were right, only to find out they were wrong .

ramipalo (572) | 3 years ago | it helps position the seat belt the way it was meant to be worn on an adult. kids are generally shorter than the seat belts are manufactured for and they need a little boost to be positioned right and therefor protected.

10. williamjisir (13189) | 3 years ago | You are nice and kind to think of the safety of the kid of your sister-in-law. Unluckily, she won't listen and accept your good will. Maybe she just thinks about the comfortableness of her kid and maybe the kid feel uncomfortable sitting in a regular seat belt. Anyway, there is no need to cause trouble between you for a good relationship.
