1. phonevolts (727) | 3 years ago | They say you can start potty training from 19 months on. My son is 23 months old but still isnt potty trained. We have started him sitting on the potty with his nappy still on for him to get used to it. Some children do not be potty trained until they are 3yrs old. You will know when your child is ready with a few tips such as they hate staying in a wet/dirty nappy, they can tell you the need to go or have a poop etc. Dont rush your child or they will not want to do it. Also only start it when you have the time to go through it and are relaxed. If your going on holiday or moving soon, do not start.
Good luck with it, it will happen when your daughter is ready.:)

2. Rollo1 (1626) | 3 years ago | I just read an article in the news that says the newest fad is people potty-training children from birth! They don't use diapers, the children supposedly use hand signals or something to tell mom when they need to go. There's a debate over whether they are being potty-trained or learning to go on cue but in any case, I don't see how it is possible. The story of a woman holding her small child over a restroom sink to relieve herself was enough for me.
As to my kids, one started about age two and was completely trained by 2 1/2. My son was harder to convince. He learned to urinate into the potty early but only did it if you reminded him and bowel movements were the hard part. But one week I managed to be home from work and told him, that's it, we are not wearing diapers this week so if you don't want to have dirty undies... That worked well for him, he remembered to get to the potty, but I had to take even the pull-ups away for it to work.
Each child is different, I guess that is what I want to say. I think that's what most "experts" say too. Trying before the child is ready makes both you and the child tense and unhappy. But it's good to make the option available to your child, and let them know that it's the way of the future.
Good luck, whenever you and your daughter decide to start.

| henritom (37) | 3 years ago | Thanks for that. My mum is one of those that believes the child should be potty trained from birth. Shes is in the UK otherwise I'd ask her to show me how its possible. I also hear that girls are easily potty trained that boys. I think I will wait a while till she shows more signs of being ready. I know that it will save a lot of money on daipers too.

| 3. mwhite21 (3) | 3 years ago | I have a 15 month old that really seems to want to potty train so yesterday I did some research. I am a first time mom and wanted to make sure that I didn't push my daughter to do what she was not yet willing to do. I am registered on a site for parents of kids and to-be-moms and it has so much information on what to expect, what products to buy, etc. You should check it out as it will have some amazing information and quite a few articles on potty training. It is www.babycenter.com. . Hope I was of some help!

| henritom (37) | 3 years ago | Thanks for that advice. I'm also a first time mom, so wanted to make sure that I am doing the right thing. I will definately take a look at that site. I'm sure it will also answer other queries I have about parenting.

mac1946 (967) | 3 years ago | I am on a potty training board with Ivillage.com that will try to answer any and all questions in this area. Ivillage also has boards that will cover basically any subject you need. there is no e-mailing,you just ask your question on the board and you might even get an answer while you are reading other posts. My board is toilet teaching.

mac1946 (967) | 3 years ago | By the way, sorry I didn't answer this in my last reply. The old age of starting was between 18 months and 2 1/2 years of age, depending on the child. This was when all that was used were cloth diapers, plastic pants, and cloth training pants with plastic pants, the children could feel when they went, and did not like the feel. now of coarse, with the disposables, they are not wet,and could care less about messing in them.

4. LadyDulce (617) | 3 years ago | Don't worry about what your mom says; kids know when they're ready to be trained. She's only a year and a half, and most kids aren't trained until about 2 years, so you've got time. Boys take a bit longer though, lol. It took me until my baby brother was 3 to get him comfortable enough to ditch the diaper completely, but a couple of years after that until he could aim properly (for the most part, anyway). My sister decided she wanted to wear big girl princess undies at 2 years old, so she just got up there and did her business. My son, however, is only 13 months and already likes to sit on the big toilet, so I'm starting him earlier than I normally would. If you take off the pressure and make it a fun stepping-stone, they'll learn to look forward to potty time. Many times, young kids just don't recognize the signs of needing to go, so ask them every 15 minutes or so and set them on the potty. It's much easier if your daughter is uncomfortable in her wet diaper. My son HATES being in a wet diaper; he'll wake up in the middle of the night or wherever we are and just strip off the diaper. If your kid can take off her clothes, hates being wet, and shows an interest in the potty; she's ready. Blessed Be

| 5. bubbas_closet (3) | 3 years ago | I would start now. The catch is that you start without any hope for instant potty training. The sooner you intoduce her to the potty the sooner she will be ready on her own to use it. At 18 months, she really shouldn't be potty trained, not to say that there are not those out there that are. I introduced my kids to the potty when they started walking (and do the same with my daycare kids). Just setting them on there when they wake up in the morning or after nap, this works really great if they are usually dry when they get up. That will introduce them to the idea of going on the potty. You and your dd will know when it is time to move forward to asking her if she needs to go (when you notice that she is about to go, as they get older they tend to stop what they are doing to go in their diaper). Don't forget the praises and don't worry about scolding at this point, just make it a fun new thing. I would also stick with diapers for now, unless she is like my dd and decides that she likes to take off her diaper on her own. My DS was fully trained just before he turned 3 and my dd was fully trained at 2 1/2.

6. dorisday1971 (2140) | 3 years ago | Hi henritom! Welcome to mylot. I don't think there is no such thing as the best age for potty training. Just observe your child if she is ready to have her toilet training. My daughter who is not 20 months never sat down on her potty chair. But now she uses the toilet bowl for her "poo" and "pee".
