A Wife's Request  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476) 5 years ago

I want to let everyone know up front I got this in my email and it is a copy and paste of that email. It made me cry, and I just wanted to share it. For those Americans who have loved ones in the military away from home in a foreign land this is for you.

WIFE'S REQUEST

I was sitting alone in one of those loud, casual steak houses that you find all over the country. You know the type--a bucket
Of peanuts on every table, shells littering the floor, and a
Bunch of perky college kids racing around with long neck
Beers and sizzling platters.

Taking a sip of my iced tea, I studied the crowd over the rim
Of my glass. My gaze lingered on a group enjoying their meal.

They wore no uniform to identify their branch of service, but
They were definitely "military:" clean shaven, cropped haircut,
And that "squared away" look that comes with pride.

Smiling sadly, I glanced across my table to the empty seat
Where my husband usually sat.

It had only been a few months since we sat in this very booth,
Talking about his upcoming deployment to the Middle East .

That was when he made me promise to get a sitter for the kids,
Come back to this restaurant once a month and treat myself to
A nice steak.

In turn he would treasure the thought of me being here,
Thinking about him until he returned home .

I fingered the little flag pin I constantly wear and wondered
Where he was at this very moment. Was he safe and warm?
Was his cold any better? Were my letters getting through to him?

As I pondered these thoughts, high pitched female voices from
The next booth broke into my thoughts.

"I don't know what Bush is thinking about. Invading Iraq You'd
Think that man would learn from his old man's mistakes. Good
Lord. What an idiot! I can't believe he is even in office. You do
Know, he stole the election."

I cut into my steak and tried to ignore them, as they began an
Endless tirade running down our president.

I thought about the last night I spent with my husband, as he
Prepared to deploy. He had just returned from getting his
Smallpox and anthrax shots.

The image of him standing in our kitchen packing his gas mask
Still gives me chills.

Once again the women's voices invaded my thoughts.

"It is all about oil, you know. Our soldiers will go in and
Rape and steal all the oil they can in the name of 'freedom'.
Hmmm! I wonder how many innocent people they'll kill without
Giving it a thought? It's pure greed, you know."

My chest tightened as I stared at my wedding ring. I could still
See how handsome my husband looked in his "mess dress"
The day he slipped it on my finger.

I wondered what he was wearing now. Probably his desert
Uniform, affectionately dubbed "coffee stains" with a heavy
Bulletproof vest over it.

"You know, we should just leave Iraq alone. I don't think they
Are hiding any weapons. In fact, I bet it's all a big act just to
Increase the president's popularity. That's all it is, padding
The military budget at the expense of our social security and
Education. And, you know what else? We're just asking for
Another 9-11. I can't say when it happens again that we didn't
Deserve it."< BR> Their words brought to mind the war protesters
I had watched gathering outside our base. Did no one even
Appreciate the sacrifice of brave men and women, who leave
Their homes and family to ensure our freedom? Do they even
Know what "freedom" is?

I glanced at the table where the young men were sitting, and
Saw their courageous faces change. They had stopped eating
And looked at each other dejectedly, listening to the women
Talking.

"Well, I, for one, think it's just deplorable to invade Iraq, and
I am certainly sick of our tax dollars going to train professional
Baby-killers we call a military."

Professional baby-killers? I thought about what a wonderful
Father my husband is, and of how long it would be before he
Would see our children again. That's it! Indignation rose up
Inside me. Normally reserved, pride in my husband gave me
A brassy boldness I never realized I had. Tonight one voice
Will answer on behalf of our military, and let her pride in our
Troops be known.

Sliding out of my booth, I walked around to the adjoining booth
And placed my hands flat on their table. Lowering myself to
Eye level with them, smiling I said, "I couldn't help overhearing
Your conversation. You see, I'm sitting here trying to enjoy my
Dinner alone. And, do you know why? Because my husband,
Whom I love with all my heart, is halfway around the world
Defending your right to say rotten things about him."

"Yes, you have the right to your opinion, and what you think is
none of my business. However, what you say in public is
something else, and I will not sit by and listen to you ridicule
MY country, MY president, MY husband, and all the other
fine American men and women who put their lives on the
line, just so you can have the "freedom" to complain. Freedom
is an expensive commodity, ladies. Don't let your actions
cheapen it."

I must have been louder than I meant to be, because the
manager came over to inquire if everything was all right.

"Yes, thank you," I replied.

Then, turning back to the women, I said, "Enjoy the rest of
your meal."

As I returned to my booth applause broke out. I was embarrassed
for making a scene, and went back to my half eaten steak.
The women picked up their check and scurried away.

After finishing my meal, and while waiting for my check, the
manager returned with a huge apple cobbler ala mode.

"Compliments of those soldiers," he said. He also smiled
and said the ladies tried to pay for my dinner, but that another
couple had beaten them to it.

When I asked who, the manager said they had already left,
but that the gentleman was a veteran, and wanted to take
care of the wife of "one of our boys."

With a lump in my throat, I gratefully turned to the soldiers
and thanked them for the cobbler. Grinning from ear to ear,
they came over and surrounded the booth.

"We just wanted to thank you, ma'am. You know we can't
get into confrontations with civilians, so we appreciate what
you did."

As I drove home, for the first time since my husband's
deployment, I didn't feel quite so alone. My heart was filled
with the warmth of the other diners who stopped by my table,
to relate how they, too, were proud of my husband, and
would keep him in their prayers.

I knew their flags would fly a little higher the next day.

Perhaps they would look for more tangible ways to show their
pride in our country, and the military who protect her. And
maybe, just maybe, the two women who were railing against
our country, would pause for a minute to appreciate all the
freedom America offers, and the price it pays to maintain it's
freedom.

As for me, I have learned that one voice CAN make a difference.

Maybe the next time protesters gather outside the gates of the
base where I live, I will proudly stand on the opposite side with
a sign of my own. It will simply say, "Thank You!"

To those who fought for our Nation: Freedom has a flavor the
protected will never know.

GOD BLESS AMERICA !

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom
for their commanders. Pass this on to as many as you think
will respond.

"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as
they protect us."

What a great stiry! And I too cried while reading it.....more people need to stand up and speak out to these people.....yes,everyone has a right to their opinions but when out in public, they should really take a look a round, there may be more than just the wife of a soldier sitting there

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476)  5 years ago

Thanks Tad1fan...We have restaurants like the one spoken about.. where the peanut shucks are on the ground.. I forget the name of the restaurant.. but I always wanted to eat there.. anyway..

Yes, people forget about the soldiers that are fighting to keep the rights the people in this country have... and when while we may have very different opinions of the issues, we should at least look around and if there are other people there, save the comments until later or lower the voice. I couldn't help but feel bad for the soldiers in the restaurant that day... and I am glad that wife of a soldier stood up for them.

Me too.I live in Canada,I have Quebec on one side of me and on the other side is Gage town,we have lost so many soldiers from both places in the last few months that it is terrible,I hate when we are out and hear people call them 'stupid' for putting themselves in 'that position'....

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476)  5 years ago

Yep, people can be cruel and ignorant and not even realize it.

It made me cry too. I have two nephews who are going to Iraq in January and it's killing me. I wish there were a way to make people realize that there ARE alot of us that are against the war and against Bush for everything he's done in office especially this war but still support our troops 1000%! To hear of someone calling our troops baby killers and things like that makes me ill. I want this war to end BECAUSE I support our men and women and want them home safe and sound with their loving families!

Yup. Brought me to tears too.

I'm Canadian, and I support the troops from every country that are trying to improve the world's situations everywhere.

Everytime I hear "baby killers" used in reference to the soldiers, I want to go ballistic. I have never been a soldier, but I will throw whatever ability I have left into a fat lip on whoever says it. MAN OR WOMAN!

The only baby killers that are easy to find in North America are the abortionists that these sleezy wenches go to.

I am easily riled up on stuff like this. Because I have heard it myself. And reacted the exact same way. I have thrown people from my taxi for saying this crappola.

To bad that this is why freedom means nothing anymore.

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476)  5 years ago

Good for you Freebc.. for standing your ground with these people. Freedom is not free and it didn't come cheap. I'm not violent, but I'd want to punch someone in the nose for criticising soldiers for doing their jobs to keep the freedom they enjoy.

My son served a year in Iraq and I have several friends, including one who served 5 different tours in Iraq and Afanganistan, who are proud to serve our country. It is interesting that every person I know who has served there feels the decision was the correct one. What upsets them the most is reports in the Media is different than what they saw over there. They report that the local people are reporting the location and numbers of Insurgants in their neighborhoods. The major media outlets seem to more interested in pointing out all the things the Americans are doing wrong and how evil our troops are at the same time they say we support the troops. If people knew the truth about how the war was going they would be more supportive

On my travels this summer I saw lots of signs supporting the troops and their efforts in Iraq. I would ask all of you to pray for our troops and to their successful completation of their mission.

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476)  5 years ago

I Amen that! It is time for everyone who lives in our country and enjoys the freedom it holds to come together and support our troops. Support them even if you don't agree with the war.. these soldiers need us to believe in them and support them.

Hello OreoCookie3,

Geesh, thanks alot for getting me all teary-eyed at work. Only kidding, well kind of. I am reading this at work, and my eyes did well up, yet I'm very thankful that you've shared this with us.

Oh, wouldn't I have loved to be in the restaurant with that brave, fed-up soldier's wife? Yes, indeedy!

This story is indicative of what is deeply troubling about the anti-war voice in this country. So many of them don't seem to understand that being in the military is all about service. It is 'selfessness' in a way that those who haven't served can never truly understand, or appreciate. Both from our soldiers and their families.

Thanks again for sharing!

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476)  5 years ago

You are so welcomed! And I'm sorry I made you cry with this, but it made me cry too.. Our soldiers need us to come together for them, so they know that they are not serving and dying unnoticed.

OMG I am sobbing now. That was a beautiful story. Even though I detest the war and am not crazy about Bush. The soldiers who are there are defending their country and they are doing what they think is right and good. My son is in the army and I Thank God every day he is not in Iraq. But he could still go. I KNOW my son is not a baby killer. I know he is a very good man who does what he thinks is right. I will always be proud of him and his decisions. Thanks for sharing that wonderful story!!

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476)  5 years ago

You are very welcome Snow. Even if we don't agree on the issues, we as a nation need to stand behind our troups and encourage them as best we can. I'm glad your son is not in Iraq. As a mom of a service man you can understand how that lady felt having our soldiers talked about like that in a negative light. I'm glad she stood up and confronted the issue.

Wow this was some story to read and so wonderful. I'm totally against this war myself, but I'm not against the men and women fighting it...so many do not want to be there at all. My super's son had joined the military to get the "free" college education, not realizing of course, that because he had, he was sent over to fight in the war himself. When he came back he said he didn't want to talk or relive what he had seen, and God knows what he did as I don't think any person who is involved in a war, even if they do come back physically all right, come back completely unscathed mentally.
So while I'm against this war, against Bush, and yes complain about the war, I'm in no way complaining about those who are involved with it and risking there lives everyday
Thanks for sharing this Oreo

Thanks Pye.. My brother went into the navy to be an interpreter.. he never got the job he was promised and served his time during the mid to late 60's... thank God he stayed out of Viet Nam. They tell you anything to get you to sign up, and then you go where they put you.

It is outrageous when people attack the troops serving their country. In my oppinion they can say what they like about the powers that took them there, but they need to understand that our men and women serving out there do not pick and chose which wars to involve themselves in, they protect our countries whether they think it's right or wrong. My father served in the first gulf war. I have a few friends serving in Iraq at the moment and not all of them agree with the war but it isn't their position to pass judgement. To call them 'professional baby killers' shows complete ignorance.

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476)  5 years ago

You are right 4ftfingers.. our soldiers have to go where they are deployed. They don't get to say, I don't want to go there. The very soldiers that are called those bad names are fighting for their right to say that! I hope more people think before they say such things about our men and women in the military.

Some people can be so callous. That military wife had a perfect right to give those 'ladies' a dressing down. Did they ever figure what would happen if America was unable to send troops to Iraq? The land would be a bloodbath. I well remember Vietnam and the way the troops were referred to when trying to keep all of Vietnam from turning Communist, how the outcry got the troops recalled and their Vietnamese wives and children brought to America. I remember how these men were also referred to as 'baby killers' and the psychological damage done to them and how it was only with the Chuck Norris movies that they were able to gain some respect. I would hate to see the same thing happen with the Iraqi war. American soldiers and marines are dying over there, as they are dying in foreign shores so that the American people can be free. An accolade from a Canadian for this military wife and for the United States for doing what many in my country refuse to do, to defend freedom. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Hello Oreocookie3 Ji,
Your expressions of your feelings towards nation, as well as to your husband are heart-touching. I am a veteran from Indian Air Force, and similar feelings all ladies conceal in them. But I am happy to share your feelings and prey Almighty, that your hubby joins you after hi sdeployment is complete, or Bush wakes up.
have a nice time.
