 My son potty trained himself a couple of months ago. His "method" is a little unorthodox as he "squats" on the seat. He's got good balance though, so I figured this would work until he gets more comfortable with the toilet.
He started Kindergarten yesterday and I sent a note to school with him explaining to the teacher his method.
When I talked to her after school I asked about whether he went to the potty or not. He was wearing the same clothes he went to school in, so there weren't any accidents at least. She told me that he wouldn't use the toilet but he did use the urinal.
The thing is... he's never SEEN a urinal before. The only bathrooms he's been in besides the ones in homes were ladies rooms and the bathroom at preschool -- which only had a sink and a toilet. So I guess he saw other boys using the urinal and decided that that was what he was going to do.
I'm very proud... and very surprised.

He has been going to school for four years now (Three in special needs pre-school) Myself and his father had tried everything to get that boy potty trained, but it would not work. At the time we were going through a resting phase, before starting up the training again. He wore diapers to school (Was too skinny for the pull-ups) Anyway, one day he came home, and like it was all natural, just up and went to the bathroom. We made a big deal about it, but my son just looked up at us like "What?" I think he had been using the potty at school for a while, but it slipped the teachers mind to tell us!
