I have a pile of books i wanted to sell on amazon but can't compete with other sellers on most of them. Don't know how or why they do it but they list their titles at such low prices that they will actually be out of pocket once they have paid the postage.

They add in the postage themselves so it covers what it costs, and I have never had a bad experience with them. You can list the books at your chosen price, and they even tell you what the current high and low is, as well as what the book generally sells for. Good luck in your bookselling.:-)

2. thefortunes (1174) | 3 years ago | Hi Snugasabugxxx, I think the Amazon's shipping charges are apart from the cost of the item, so even if people pay you let's say $0.99 for the book you get the postage payemnts of $4.99 or $7.99, whatever it is apart from the cost of the book.

snugasabugxxx (477) | 3 years ago | hello and thanks for your reply. Actually i have worked it out including the postage. Many people seem to be selling books for £0.01 (about $0.02) The postage amazon add on is about £2.40, but once they take their charges and tax you are left with about £1.40 which just about covers postage for an average book but many are quite heavy and the postage would come to more than £1.40.
Have jsut been looking round second hand book stores and found some lovely brand new books very cheap only to find the book stores have written the price inside in pencil leaving an indentation - shame, could have made a profit.

3. gabesmom (1006) | 3 years ago | I have sold some books on Amazon at a loss. But I'm in profit overall because I get the books and CDs for free from Freecycle and Craigslist. You don't have to sell your books at the lowest price, although, I know that people are more likely to buy the cheapest ones. Just keep on relisting your items, there are times when the lowest price would be more than what you're willing to sell your goods. It wouldn't hurt since Amazon doesn't charge any listing fees anyway.
Another place where you can sell your items would be Craigslist. It is more time consuming because you have to list your items from scratch unlike Amazon where you just have to put in the ISBN or UPC. There is also a higher risk involved since the buyers are not registered with the site. But it's free and quite popular.

4. unusualsuspect (2413) | 3 years ago | As one of the commenters mentioned, sellers can make money on the postage allowance that Amazon gives them. They just have to make sure that the weight of the book doesn't cut into their profit. I used to sell on both Amazon and half.com, and I learned that unless a heavy book was valuable enough to get a good price, it wasn't worth selling.
The most popular books will always go for the lowest prices because there are so many of them. The price of a hardback will drop as soon as a paperback edition comes out.
You can make money selling books, but you have to learn the ins and outs.

snugasabugxxx (477) | 3 years ago | aye - i know - like i said i don't know how or why people list them at £0.01 when the postage will cost more than they receive for it - not just a few but masses of them on sale for a loss! Must all be daft people who haven't realised how much postage is!
