Fleas on Cats?? How do you prevent them??? | | I just finally got rid of the fleas on my dogs by buying some expensive flea meds... after trying several other things that didn't work. I think we finally got rid of them, but I'm still concerned about my cat because he is an indoor/outdoor cat and he's probably the one who brought the fleas home. He doesn't wear a collar, because he scratches at them so much, that it's pointless to try and make him wear one, he'll just shred it... no joke... so that option is out. And we put some flea meds on his skin that we got from the pet store, but it's just the cheap stuff, and by the hell we went through to get rid of the fleas on our dogs, i'm not convinced it'll be enough to keep them off my cat... So any flea meds you can suggest that work well on cats? I'm using K9 Advantix on my dogs, and it seems to have done the trick, but they don't make a cat brand... Thanks for the help! P.S. What about tea tree oil?

dancingmooney (778) | 2 years ago | What kind was it? That's what we ended up resorting to with our dogs, was an expensive flea product, that you put on their necks, but the brand we bought although it worked... they don't make a cat kind... so i'm hoping to find something that works! For cats... Lol. ;)

Your cat is subject to a wide array of disease and parasites that you have no real way of controlling unless you keep him inside. Also, side note: beware letting your cat out with no collar. If he is friendly (or not) someone might take him to the humane society or equivalent, thinking he is a stray. Or he will be captured if he fights with another cat, since there can be no tags saying they are rabies-free if there is no collar. I work in the animal care system, this happens sometimes.

oneandonemakesix (24074) | 2 years ago | If your cat won't wear a collar this is something you need to consider. You might want to get your cat a chip so that you can be reunited with your cat should he not come home, because of tags...and maybe this way you can also have it noted that he is protected with his shots Mooch

dancingmooney (778) | 2 years ago | Yes, he does have a chip in his ear, it was put in before I adopted him, so I do have a way of tracking him if he does get lost.. and thankfully, we live in a neighborhood where there are a few other indoor/outdoor cats in the area, that all roam around and actually hang out together... it's pretty cute really. I think the have meetings or something. Lol... He is up to date on all of his shots and such, so i'm not too worried about him... ;) Thanks for your consideration.

The thing I have heard that works the best is frontline. I've heard of Advantix, but never heard any testimonials but from you. I hope that your cat isn't bringing home any fleas, let us know if you find something that works. Mooch

| | 5. luvcatzzz (177) | 2 years ago | use advantage or frontline or revolution - you get it from the vet. please don't use any over the counter flea stuff on your cat. very bad stuff! and collars don't work and just serve to irritate the skin. those things i mentioned will work fine and they run about 10 or 12 bucks (in the US) for a month.

Rather I can't remember the name of it. However it's a flea repellent, ear mite repellent and a heart warm prevention all in one. It's great and I just put it on them once a month. I am sure you could call a vet and discribe to them what I just said and they could tell you what it is.

They seem to keep them at bay for week or two and then they come back with a vengence. I just keep using the carpet treatments in between the flea bombs. The collars are short lived on our cats. They find a way of slipping them off. I have also used the treatments that you put on their necks. I can't afford the expensive stuff, but Sargents has one that seems to be helping and isn't too expensive.

I guess if he is scratching the collar off, you can try to coat him with flea powder, but you are going to have to keep it up and do it frequently. And do try setting off the bombs in your house.

| | | | 9. Katskornerkat (5) | 2 years ago | Hello! I am Kat and I own the business at: http://animalworld-etc.com I have had cats for over 35 years and I can tell you some facts you may find helpful... First off, PREVENTING fleas and getting rid of them are two different things! LOL OK, Prevention INCLUDES: spraying cat litter box, pet bed, and around the doors of your home to keep eggs from growing and adult fleas from living. Moreover, if your cat is going in and out, she is bringing the fleas in, but so is anyone else who walks outdoors and comes back in! Fleas are found in most yards without animals! So anyone could be the culprit...so outdoors IS the CULPRIT, period. Well, flea collars, dips, spray, and powder all work IF you get the pro kind from the vets. Many store products are JUNK.This is your VERY BEST PREVENTION.Bathing your cat with flea shampoo can help too, if you want stronger protection... To GET RID OF fleas~oh my, it seems so impossible and overwhelming, but it CAN be done! I suggest using DAWN dish soap to get rid of fleas you can see and know are there.(Infestation)Then getting a dip for the cat and have the vets put it on and show you how to do it.The very best dip out there is the Advantage Plus for cats, used monthly. Also, I use a bomb from the vets to do my entire home in the fall or spring. Fleas live all year and all they do is multiply! The bomb will kill eggs too, so that no infestations occur in your home. Lastly, I did mention a home remedy there~ Dawn dish soap! IT WORKS! If you wash kitty in Dawn, you will be doing so with what the experts use for animals in oil spills! Dawn cuts the grease and tar off ducks and they live. I use Dawn for about everything around the house too.It kills fleas. Good luck! If you need my help anymore, please just ask! Thanks! dancingmooney (778) | 2 years ago | Kat - thank you so much for replying... you've provided very valuable information, and I intend to use it! Lol... So far, we've been really thankful that while we found fleas on our dogs earlier this year, they have not taken over our home. We've done the vacuuming the sprays, the whole nine yards... and bought the expensive stuff for our dogs from an online pet meds place. I wish I had just gone ahead and did the same for the cat, but we bought K9 Advantix, and they don't make that for cats... So, now I know which products to try and you get bet that our little guy is going to get a bath with dawn today! Lol... Thanks to ALL who left suggestions here, I truly appreciate all of your help! Unfortunately, fleas are a truly hard thing to get rid of, and I know anyone who's got pets can relate in some way or another... the frustration of getting rid of and preventing them. Thanks again, and i'll let you know how it goes... Kitty is getting a bath for starters! Lol...

| | | | | 10. ferritic (42) | 2 years ago | We just put brewers yeast to the cat's food. Brewers yeast is just Vitamin B. It will help to make the blood of the cat a little bit bitter taste thus flea will naturally will not suck the cat's blood because it is bitter. Vitamin B will even make your cat's fur very soft and shinny. This is also proven against ticks infestation for dogs. Aside from the brewers yeast, flea loves to hide at the crevices of wooden floors or ceramic tiles. Make sure to vacuum the area where your cat always sleep and burn the dust from the vaccum bag. More power, Ferritic.
