Have you ever had to put your dog in boarding kennels?  email this discussion to a friend?

Recently I had to put our dog into boarding kennels for the first time and whilst I didn't particularily like the idea I had to do it as no one was available to dog sit.

She was in the kennels for 5 days and as this was her first time I was a little worried about leaving here with people she didn't know.

I needn't have worried as when I picked her up she was fine and was looked after well.

Have you ever had to board your dog and if so, who was more worried about it you or your dog?

I've never boarded my dog since I usually have a friend willing to watch her when I go out of town, but my mom used to run a boarding kennel when I was young.

It was actually a lot of fun for me, because there were always new dogs to walk and play with and we only ever had 3 or 4 dogs in the years of running the kennel that were unhappy and antisocial.

Almost all the dogs we ever had, loved it. The ones that could be trusted off lead came swimming with us at the pond, and the ones that couldn't went out for long walks with us kids. It was like a vacation for them, and a lot of our dogs were repeats until we moved and shut down the kennel. We also became friends with a lot of the owners, recieved Christmas cards from their fur-clan every Christmas, and got teary phone calls from them when their beloved pet passed away.

We were a really small operation, mom never took more than 4 dogs at one time since we had our own to focus on, too, so all the boarding dogs we had got lots of one on one time and if we had one accustomed to sleeping on their master's bed, they got to sleep on mine while they were on their 'retreat'.

I think if I were ever to board my girl, that would be the only way I'd do it. Some of the big operations just let the dogs out to romp together, and that can be a recipe for disaster. Or they don't get exercise at all, they just pace their kennels all day, and my girl needs more exercise than that.

That sounds like a fun childhood and must have been very satisfying for you and your mom.

The kennels we put Zara in had big runs for each of the dogs, a play area that the dogs were allowed in one at a time and they were walked every day.

I would still rather leave her with family but it has made me feel a lot more comfortable about boarding her again should I need to.

I've had to board my dog twice so far for when I go on vacation. I'm afraid to take him flying with me and I don't have many options for dog sitters. Luckily the vet that I use also offers boarding, so I use them whenever I need to. I too was a little leery of leaving my dog with them for the first time because, A. He's not very good around people he meets for the first time and B. I didn't know how we would react to me leaving him in a strange place. He actually did very well and was nice to all of the nurses and doctors. I think he's become more familiar with them and he's not as afraid of them any more. I feel comfortable leaving him there and I'm glad I have a definite safe place for him to stay whenever I have to travel out of state.

It's nice when you find someone that you feel comfortable leaving your dog with, it means that you can go away without worrying about how they are.

Dog kennels are normally really fun places for your dogs, as they are filled with new smells and things. However if you have a timid or shy dog, they might not enjoy it so you might want to look into alternative care for them. Always go in the back and see where your dog will be staying just to be sure they allow the dog enough room and such. Also, don't worry if your dog loses some weight. The stress and excitement might cause them to not get hungry, and they might spend more time barking and being active which contributes to the weight loss. If you know these things, there is no reason to worry.

I think she probably had a good time as she loves being round other dogs and people and when we brought her home she slept for the best part of two days.

Yes I've had to do so and didn't like it one bit but had no choice. Our german shepherd puppy was tearing up things left and right so there was no way we could leave her in the back yard for a week or we'd not have anything left. lol I worried sick over her but there really was no need. She was fine when I picked her up. In fact, the veterinarian let her run all around the office building when no one was around so she had the time of her life. LOL When I left her there again, I didn't worry about her one bit because I knew she was well cared for and well loved.

That's interesting. I had to take my puppies to a kennel when I went to Florida, they required shots before even accepting them. I felt it was a little strict but well worth it. The dogs were a little frightened at first but they told us they warmed up quickly, since they don't have me around to feel they need to protect. They missed us terribly but all went well. :)
