In my opinion- no, because that would be a cop-out. And Ewan's amazing line, "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return" wouldn't have the same impact.
What are your thoughts? Would you have preferred to see them live on together? Or did the ending work?

 goodnightmoon (1380) | 12 months ago | I completely agree. I guess we always want a happy ending, even if it changes the quality of the movie (or play - can you imagine Romeo & Juliet living happily ever after? ha)
Even with the beautiful set-up in the beginning, any other ending would be a Hollywood cop-out. She could have been in the hospital or undergoing therapy, but in the end, if it ended any other way, probably still not be as powerful.

And it wouldn't have ruined the movie for you having a happily-ever-after end? (of course they'd probably have to omit his "love" quote, since it wouldn't have the same impact)...

I think that the movie is awesome the way it is; if they had lived happily ever after, as it were, it would just be another forgettable sappy chick flick. As it is, it is one of the most powerful movies ever made.

You like down in the dump endings watch Sweeny Todd, Johny Depp can SING like a mo fo and this is bleak even for Tim Burton. Bloody, gorey, singing fun! Best film I've seen in a long time.

I have not yet seen Sweeny Todd but it has been added to my Netflix list. Wow, quite the review! I suppose I'll have to prepare myself for the ending though.

I have heard so many wonderful things about the movie, so maybe it really is good. Is that the movie with Nichole Kidman? Maybe the movie was so good because she was going through that painful breakup with Tom Cruise at the time, behind the scenes. Sometimes pain produces beauty. At least in the movies and art.
