What is it about sharks that is so intriguing? |
|
I have a horrible fear of sharks (who doesn't, eh?) but an absolute love for them too. I love to watch any Discovery channel shows on sharks (I loved "Shark Week" they aired not too long ago, did any one else watch that?). I've seen "Deep Blue Sea" many times (though admittedly haven't seen Jaws more than a couple times)... what is it about sharks that makes them so interesting?!
Anyone obsessed with sharks?!

1. tdbrower1969 (1064) | 3 years ago | I am not really obsessed with sharks, but I really like to watch about them on the discovery channel. I don't know what it is about them that makes them so appealing to learn more about. I would really like to go down in a shark cage and see them, but I am afraid that I would be too scared to do that!

goodnightmoon (1975) | 3 years ago | I only say I'm obsessed because I'm GLUED to the screen when any shark show is on. Possibly becoming an unhealthy obsession for me, ha. Certainly isn't lessening my fear of them!
I'd love to go down in a shark cage as well. Too bad they can smell fear (or feel vibrations in the heart beat, whatever) so they'd know I was afraid. An easy victim, eh?:X And I doubt I'd be able to ever muster up the courage to actually go through with it! Even with a cage.

goodnightmoon (1975) | 3 years ago | Good point. It seems like humans are more likely to seek sharks out rather than the other way around. It's a shame when swimmers/surfers are attacked but sharks aren't intentional attacking us, and it's sad that we blame them when we are well aware of where they are.

3. larskie23 (531) | 3 years ago | im not obessed with shark but ive seen deep blue see and jaws a couple of times. i like watching Discovery Channel about sharks too, but not really into it. Sharks are dangerous as humans are dangerous to sharks too. The most dangerous shark are the Great White Shark, the Tiger Shark, the Hammerhead Shark, The Mako shark and the Bull Shark. But on average there only about 100 shark attacks that result to 10 human deaths. But from the sharks perspective, people kill thousands of shark every year, for food, and fun. just an info.

goodnightmoon (1975) | 3 years ago | You have a healthy curiosity, yes? Just not to the point of obsession;)
"Sharks are dangerous as humans are dangerous to sharks too."
Definitely! However, humans are worse. Sharks don't attack for pleasure, while humans knowingly hunt them. It's a shame we have become so fearful of these beautiful creatures that the only way for us to feel in control is to hurt them.
Interesting. I know the Great White is the most feared shark, and the Tiger shark will eat anything but I didn't know the Hammerhead was it the same category!

goodnightmoon (1975) | 3 years ago | AWW poor shark!:(
I have never seen a shark in person, dead or alive. I've heard about punching it in its nose, but if you're not careful and you miss, it'll end up in its mouth! Also, poking it in the eyes is supposed to be a safe way to scare it away. (Hopefully we never need to try these out!)
That sounds really scary, even if you know it is 100% dead! I would probably feel the same way. I also HATE seeing any living creature dead. It makes me sad:(
Definitely only admire from afar --- a far, far, FAR.

I don't think I have a favorite. Though I find the Great White the most intriguing because it's the most terrifying.

6. sk66rc (2237) | 1 year ago | Wouldn't say obsessed but I've watched some shows & read up on few articles on them, just out of curiosity... Did you know that there are more than 360 types of sharks? And I could be wrong about the numerical figure but most of them, close to 75%, can't sleep? If they stop swimming, they'll die of drowning because their muscles in the gills are not design to force water through it so they have to force it by constantly swimming... Also most of them have incredible immune system... I believe it was great white shark that they tested, that they injected 5 great white sharks with AIDS virus & tag them... 4 months later, they caught up to 3 of them & couldn't find a trace of AIDS virus... Last time I've heard, they're trying to study sharks immune system... Also, shark is one of the very few, including crocodiles & roaches, that almost didn't change at all for millions of years of evolution... I'm sure there have been minor changes but very few from what I understand... Some of the shark's senses are so advance & they can "smell" 1 drop of blood from thousands of feet away and even more impressive, they can sense dying fishes heart beat from almost a mile away... Their body & system is designed almost to perfection that they didn't need to change for millions of years... They are ineteresting animals... Oh, by the way, here's a little trivia... Whales are NOT the biggest fish in the water, Shark is... Whales are not fish...

goodnightmoon (1975) | 1 year ago | I didn't know the exact number of different shark species, but I'm not surprised the number is that high. There's a lot of large sharks, but also a great number of smaller and less known sharks.
I do know about the lack of sleep/not being able to stop swimming. However, they do rest, just not in the same way we do.
As for their immune system, that's where the writers got to the concept for the movie "Deep Blue Sea." (An awesome film, by the way). The plot written on imdb.com has, "Searching for a cure to Alzheimer's disease a group of scientists on an isolated research facility become the bait as a trio of intelligent sharks fight back." ...that's what you get when you make such massive creatures that much smarter!
Your statements on their senses are also correct. Sharks are quite advanced with their ability to smell blood and hear/sense sick or dying fish in the water, even from a mile away. However, it's not the heart beat they hear, but rather how the fish is swimming. Weak and dying fish struggle more, so they move much faster (in one spot) and sharks can detect that; much like when humans kick around in the water.
Thanks for the reply!

7. Ramoth (1054) | 1 year ago | I'm not obsessed with them, but I DO like them.
I've seen the shark movies and some documentaries on tv. I like to watch Shark Week.
To me, a shark is like any other fish. It's toothy and dangerous...yes. Treat it with respect and don't be stupid and you should be ok. At least we've been ok following these rules.
We aren't commercial fishermen and don't use a boat. We fish for sharks off the beach and we used to wade fish for them. That's when you stand in the water and cast your line out and stay there until you get a bite on the line.
Sharks taste good, but are also just cool to look at. Their skin feels smooth rubbed one way and very rough when rubbed the other way. We've even found an empty shark egg case on the beach once. It was hard to believe that a creature that big starts out as a little thing.

goodnightmoon (1975) | 1 year ago | I just finished watching some "Shark Week" episodes I recorded awhile back. Such interesting shows! And amazing creatures. I cannot believe how calm some people are when swimming with sharks. Even great whites! As much as I'd love the story and memory, I don't think I could do that, even in the safety of the cage!
Exactly. People assume too much about the intention of sharks. One of the "Shark Week" shows tested theories to see what caused sharks to attack. It was very difficult for them to provoke an attack! Sharks may cause harm and death to humans, but they do not intend to! Humans are more cruel to each other than sharks are to us!
I'm glad you're smart and careful with your fishing. I'm pretty sure I don't ever want to taste a shark. I won't say never (never say never) but I have absolutely no interest in that meal! I realize shark fins are delicacies in some parts of the world, but it saddens me to know people kill these creatures for their own benefit -- especially for such a small part of them!
Thanks for the reply!

8. JashleyB (1157) | 12 months ago | I think it's because sometimes things you fear seem fascinating to you. I myself also think sharks are very interesting and can't turn away when I see one on tv or in an aquarium, but, if i'm at the beach and I see a shark fin out there in the waves I am out of there so fast lol.;)

Yes!! Indeed. Much like tigers, I'm fascinated by these beautiful creatures but never do I wish to see them in the wild!
