What type of fish to you like to have in a freshwater tank? |
|
I love having a freshwater fish tank with a variety of tropical fish sharing the habitat. Right now I have a 75 gallon fish tank. My two favorite fish are Clown Loaches. Mine are both about seven years old and six inches long. We have several algae eaters that are ten inches long. I also have an assortment of fancy guppies, mollies and tetras. I tend to stick with community fish for my tank. A friend gave us two Pacu a few years ago without knowing what they really are. While they did get along fine with the other fish by the time we had them for about six months they were over twelve inches long and way too big for the tank. We had to find them a new home. So, what are your favorite types of fish to keep in your freshwater tank?

petitehye (1329) | 3 years ago | I understand. Anyway, I really wanted to raise milkfish in a pond. Sounds interesting. But if I'll be building an aquarium, I want it to be filled with goldfishes.

3. oscarbartoni (1699) | 3 years ago | I would love to have some Asian Arowanas but in the United States of America they are not allowed because they are endangered in the wild. I am setting up a fish room with about 100 tanks fro breeding tropical fishes (freshwater). One of the fish that I will be raising to sell ate the angelfish, nearly every store will take some from a good breeder (as long as the stock is hardy enough and looks good).I will also be breeding some of the killifish and also some freshwater crustaceans like shrimp and dwarf crawfish.

oscarbartoni (1699) | 3 years ago | That is only if you can find someone with a large enough tank to put him/her in and is willing to pay that much. When I worked in a pet shop people would bring in large fish and give them to us just so they would not die in their tanks.

warriorsdaughter (555) | 3 years ago | We aren't getting rid of him. We are planning on building our own aquarium large enough for him to have more room to grow. We priced larger tanks and they are outrageous!!
If we were to sale him or give him up he would go to the zoo that is 45 minutes from us. They have tons of them and some are triple the size of mine!

| momincharge (82) | 3 years ago | If you research Pacu you will find that as they grow they will need about a 750 gallon tank. That's huge and not many people have room for one that big, even if you build it yourself.
I doubt it is worth that much. Heck, giving ours away was hard because few people have tanks that big. Even the local aquarium and zoo were not interested. The pet stores laughed when I called them. Freecycle was our only hope.
What do you feed yours. Ours loved baby carrot sticks, fruit and most kinds of veggies. We loved watching them but simply couldn't keep them.
Have you read the article on Associated Content about them?
Good luck with yours.

warriorsdaughter (555) | 3 years ago | Holy cow! That is one huge tank, but we actually do have the room in our house for something that large. Sounds like an interesting project for my hubby and me!!
We just feed him pellats and feeder fish. Didn't know you could feed them other things. Guess I need to do a little more research on them.

5. oscarbartoni (1699) | 3 years ago | In the wild the pacus can reach over 4 foot long and they will eat most any vegetable matter that is in the water. their teeth are very sharp and powerful so that they can bite through Brazil nuts (which usually take some doing by man with equipment). You might be better off building a pond indoors for your pacu with a few windows to see in. There are too many pet shops that will sell animals (not just fish) that are not really suitable for home growing . Most of the fish that I am referring to just get too large to house in normal sized tanks and others are poisonous or dangerous in other ways (like the electric eel) Often when a fish is bought and not put into a proper size tank it dies a slow and horrible death. Fish are growing all through their lives but if they are in too small a container of water the inside organs will keep on growing even if the outside are not growing. this will stress the fish and lower their resistance to diseases. Other fish that should not be kept by any but the really knowledgeable and able to care for them is the fish that has a special diet such as fish that needs a particular king of insect or other food that is not easily gotten. A lot of pet shops will not tell you these things when you buy the fish but expect you to buy things to help keep the fish alive. I have seen pet shops sell oscars and guppies to go into the same tank as tank mates and not as predator and prey.

7. paulinabhadra1577 (1407) | 3 years ago | i have always loved fresh water tanks. they are better than marine aquariums as they are maintainence free, more colourful and more vivecious .the fishes are friendlier generraly.my favourite fishes are gold fishes, angels, discuses, loaches, mollies, swordtails, guppies.generally freshwater aquariums fishes are active swimmers so the tank is always busy with activity.
