What is the best type of paints for a beginner? |
| |
| My mom bought me a wonderful art set for my birthday. I am disabled and I needed an outlet when I am on bed rest, so she came up with this and it is wonderful. I simply don't know where to begin. It contains everything; oil paints, water colors, acrylics, pastels, watercolor pencils, colored pencils, canvas, paper, a pallet and a table top easel. I just can't begin! I do not know how to clean up after oil paints, so I figure I had better research before attempting those, but should I use paints or pastels, colored pencils or sketch? I just can't make up my mind. I have a lot of artsy things, from beads to fabric, scrapbooking to computer work and I love to write. I have played with watercolors in the past and include writings with the writings, leaning on the abstract form of a picture. I do not think I can do a detailed image, I shake too much. Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe send me some sites where I can get some ideas. Thanks so much! | | | | | |

| | I did not even think of the library. I can look up the titles I would like to look at and call the library and have them set aside for me, explain my situation and sent someone with my library card to check them out for me. Thanks for the suggestion! | | | |

| | My advice would be to simply experiment with the one that looks like it is the most fun. Of course the sketching is the least messy. We had a woman in a drawing class that had very shaky hands. (Her hands could not even stay still in her lap) Ironically enough, she had one of the best drawings in the class. She was very patient with herself and when she was shading she used her shaky hands to her advantage and it was amazing. She left a huge impression on me. I will never forget her, though I never knew her name. Two websites to help you get going are: http://www.wetcanvas.com http://www.conceptart.org There is tons of information that should keep you busy for a very long time. | | | | | | |

| | No problem. I am Shehaub on Wetcanvas. I usually hang out in the Classical Art, but I browse the drawing and oil painting forums a lot. | | | |

| | Thank you again for showing me this wetcanvas. It appears that I was already signed up so I must have ran across it at some point in the past. But I would have never found it again without you. I hope you don't mind, but I added you to my friends list and my favorites. I did not have any and I'm so glad I could start with you. I hope you will accept me as your friend. Thanks! | | | |

| | That sounds great! I'd just look and drool for awhile! I used to paint with oils, but they take so long to dry and are very hard to clean up after--especially as you are on bed rest. I'd put the oils aside for later. Watercolor is fun to do, but can also be messy in bed. I'd opt for the colored pencils first, or the watercolor pencils. I have several fancy coloring books of angels, period costumes and geometric designs that I like to color with pencils and markers. For painting, I really like acrylics. You can use a lot of water and make washed strokes like watercolor, or you can pile the paint on like you're doing oil. It dries fast and cleans up easy, so it's the best of the paints as far as I'm concerned. I never used pastels, so can't help you there. They always reminded me of chalk--which I am alergic to! Go to Google and type in "how to" watercolor, draw, paint, etc. and you should come up with all kinds of sites. Good luck and have fun! P.S. be sure and post some pics for us when you do them! | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for the encouragement. I bought my granddaughter a coloring book a while ago, but it is too detailed for her age and I haven't given it to her as of yet, I may keep it for myself and buy her another one when I can get back to the store. I think the color pencils and the watercolor pencils may be the best way to go for now, at least until I can sit up right with less help in the bed with me (my dogs). lol Thanks again! | | | |

| | perhaps you should try to sketch with pencil and paper or colored pencils and paper before using paint? :) the easiest paint to work with for beginners is acrylic paints. | | | | | | |

| | Thank you for your advice. This is what I am leaning toward. I haven't even began anything yet. I had postponed the taxes and have waited til the deadline to finish them, so my treat will be to get to play with my artist set once I finish the taxes and I am very close! I can almost taste the pencil dust now. :) | | | |

| | I started painting by doing one stroke. It taught me brush strokes, loading the brush and good control. I have since went into oils and do landscapes and portraits. Which of course led me to drawing, so I could get my portraits on the canvas with out tracing. You just have to start. You will find as you dabble around which you enjoy. I still teach one stroke classes 3X a week. I love it all. Check your PBS stations for the one stroke tv series by Donna Dewberry. | | | | | | |

| | Thank you! I did think about the one stroke painting, but I did not know it could lead to better painting. I thought once you did one stroke, that was all you would ever do, but you are obvious proof that this is not true. Thanks again, I really appreciate your advice! | | | |

| | When I started, I used pastels a lot. They were easy to shade with and I did not have to make a mess of them. I also used colored pencils. What you need is something that is easy to clean up, nothing that needs washing, or anything that causes stains, but something when you are finished that you can close in a case or with the papers, you can roll up. | | | | | | |

| | Thank you! With the set my mom just bought me, I have pastels, pencils, the works. I haven't felt very creative, but I did pick up the pencils a few days ago. I would love to see some of your work. I'll be visiting your profile in hopes of a peep at your work. Thanks again! | | | |

| | you know what if you are real bad at shading, as you are a beginner than you should first start with just copying some drawn image, to draw exactly like that, and then when ya become real good on that then begin with your own imagination and as far as colouring, painting is advised the first step id to parctice shading so you could get motivated in your imagination and create a master work! | | | | | | |

| | Thanks! that sounds like a good idea. I could never get motivated to put anything on canvas. So I found a picture I liked and tried to copy it, but I did a very poor job of recreating the image. I will give it another try. Thanks for your input. | | | |
