2. williamjisir (13005) | 3 years ago | Hello pretty n blue. I was thinking about the answer and even searched online for the answer, but I failed to tell you the right answer. I am really sorry for that.
I think that the butterflies have their beautiful colors just like us humans with different skin colors. This is the only way that I can give you the answer because when every creature was created by God, it was given some features. hehehehe.

3. sheenmadness (584) | 3 years ago | Hi there,
A false etymology claims that a word butterfly came from a spoonerism of "flutterby". However the Old English was buttorfleoge and similar word occurs in Dutch, apparently because were thought to steal milk. An alernative folk etymology, current in great britain is that it originated as a contradiction of term butter-colored fly referring to the Brimstone Butterfly,Ganepteryx rhamni, often the first butterfly of spring compare German Schmetterling. It is according to Azrael. I just copied it hope it help answer some of your queries.^_^

5. theprogamer (7518) | 3 years ago | It definitely depends on genetics and evolution. Sometimes the colors are based on seasons, not just the general environment. Yes the colors are there to mimic other things, but its not just to mimic the environment at large. Its to blend in to certain surfaces, similar to moths. For instance a brown butterfly could evade danger by sticking to a brown surface (the most obvious being a tree body or branch). A blue butterfly could hide amongst blue flowers (violets, etc) or near large and open bodies of water conducive to receiving bluer hues. The scales in the wings are photonic in nature (similar to a prism) and can also determine the appearence of butterflies when exposed to sunlight.
Additionally the colors are also part of patterns on the butterfly to discourage predators. And other butterfly species take it a step further using aposematism, to mimic dangerous looking colors in nature, or other dangerous species (the former applies more to the butterfly than the latter, but certain species are able to mimic all the same).
Another theory holds that the colors, spots and wing formations are all a part of butterfly species communications via signals.

7. mari_skye (1153) | 3 years ago | I think the reason a butterfly has a lot of color is to attract a mate. So the ones with wonderfully bright colors are usually male so that they may be able to woo their female partners in order to procreate. As to why the butterfly is called such, I do not have an answer for it.:P
