Homeless Recovery | | | | In my first topic "Are you Homeless" I illustrated some of the challenges presented by homeless folk and also related from some of my experiences. By far the most challenging aspect of hitting rock bottom is the mental hardship. You have taken the hardest hits to your pride, you feel shame and you know you are better than your situation! It makes you angry, so angry at times you can see nothing else. After all, you deserve to have a home and job but circumstances have dumped on you. Sooner or later we all realize that it's not fair but that's the way it is! The next step is to deal with it. I established a baseline in my last topic which has me living day to day in the woods or squatting in an abandoned building. Struggling daily to eat and squirrel away a few dollars. I used to pass pennies on the sidewalk but now they are cherished as another small step toward the goal. This continuing struggle to survive may have been going on for days, weeks or months but I know, despite my feelings of worthlessnes, that I am working toward something better. I try not to think about what others have as it leaves me bitter. So here we are, some time later, our cash is growing slowly and we have established a kind of route where we work each day. Today I wash dishes for our supper and tomorrow I am over at the construction site cleaning up for a few dollars. My wife has been working a few hours a day at several motels doing housekeeping and has also found a doctors office where she goes each day at lunch to cover the phones for the receptionist. They realize she is much more than her position in life and I have been parting with some cash so she can shop at the goodwill for more presentable clothes. They see her improving her circumstances and hinted at a possible position. The construction people also realize that I am a carpenter and have told me to talk to them when I have my own tools. I am loathe to part with any cash but I know if I can just get some basic hand tools, I could make a little more, maybe even enough to get a weekly motel. Wow, a real address with a hot shower! This seems like a pipe dream as I sit by the campfire with my wife this evening, actually a barrel burning whatever we could find. But there is hope and it all depends on us overcoming our negative feelings and continuing on. Sometimes I don't even want to wake up and face the day ahead but I must go on, must survive. I have tried to give a feel for what it is like there and also to give some idea on how to improve oneself. While I had my experience as a carpenter and my wife with her medical experience there are, sadly, folks out there with very little skills they could use to get back on their feet. Some went straight to the streets from the time they left home and others held menial job which don't translate easily and are further challenged. Everyone has some skill or passion, no matter what they know or do. Everyone is capable of cleaning and washing, doing menial tasks for survival but to find the way out, one must find a way to use what they have to get ahead. One person I know, used their hour per day at the library to make web pages for people who paid him. Eventually he was able to get into a cheap rental and get a job in a warehouse. Today he is a manager who tries to help others coming from where he once was. What kind of things could you suggest to help others get out of this situation? | | | | | | | | | | Jobs Hiring Immediately Work At Home Jobs make Up to $696/day. Seen on ABC News. | | So I misunderstood the last post- I did not know you were really talking about your own situation (past)- that is impressive that you were able to overcome being homeless- I think it is harder in small towns as there really isn't alot of places to work- so the first step would be to move somehow to a bigger- more populated area- with more hotels and restaurants. Of course this is after talking with family to see if they can help you out- I think you gave great tips for anyone who is homeless. | | | | | | | SKSOUTH (391)

| | Hi Kris, there is a very fine line here. I have been very down but always able to get it back together. My worst situation was living in a weekly motel and struggling to find steady work so we could afford to rent a home and live again. But we were close a few times. I remember times when I was sure we would not be able to pay the weeks rent and be out on the street. At that time we had only one vehicle and it broke down. Luckily I have always had the good sense to realize that no matter how bad it gets, I cannot sell my tools because they are my saving grace. I am able to write about this so deeply because from the edge of the abyss, I saw what it would be like, I made my plans for how to recover and I have seen and talked with others who have been at the bottom. My intent is not to decieve or draw sympathy but rather to try and help others. You are absolutely right! The first thing the homeless must do is get to a larger popultion center where there are more resources to draw from. I used to own an electronics shop and I had this homeless fellow come around every day just to talk to me. We got to be friends and I would hire him to clean up my store room. I once asked him, after finding out he lived in a cardboard box, why he didn't leave Colorado and go south where it is warmer and there are more opportunities for work. In the end, he admitted he really didn't want a job and home but was happy to live as he was, day to day. I could not help him other than as I did. In some ways I envied his freedom but couldn't understand how he didn't mind the stigma of being homeless. | | | | | | | Jobs Hiring Immediately Work At Home Jobs make Up to $696/day. | | Hi SKSOUTH, I have already responded to first part of your posting, I repeat to tell you that I am not homeless. I have my own home in India, where I live happily with my husband and children. Yes your story is really painful and heart touching. I feel,we should help them. Here too there are tons of homeless who live on the foot path and in the railway platform. They work in moving trains, road side tea shops and also in internet parlors to earn a decent income. | | I just read this and I didn't realize this about your circumstances. I think you've got a fantastic attitude and I applaud you and your spouse for hanging in there together. A situation like that could easily end some marriages. It really gives me hope to hear a story like this. I guess we should never give up on anybody, as long as they're breathing! | | | | | | | | | | Homelessness Looking For Homelessness? Find It Nearby With Local.com! Local.com | add comment | | | |

| | I think the hardest thing to overcome, would be the feeling of hopelesness.Having the strength to carry on is something that would be hard to come by. I would suggest to never ever give up and to keep going and trying and to not let any apportunity pass by,no matter how small it may seem. | | | | | | | | | | Work at Home Jobs Online Find a Job Online.
