I read something that talked about making your own baby food instead of buying it. What do you think about this? I, personally am all for what is best for my baby, but I am also one who likes to take the easiest road possible! I like pulling a jar out and having food on hand. What do you think? Is it better to make your own baby food? How do you make your own baby food? Is there someone on here who actually makes your own baby food? How do you like/dislike it?

I made my daughter baby food. I don't add salt when I cook, so that wasn't an issue. I just took some of what we were having and threw it in the blender, adding a little milk if neccessary.

One of my daughters favourite meals was brussel sprouts, potatoes and corned beef.

You can put some into ice cube trays, freeze it and then pop the cubes into a freezer bag. If it can go in a blender, you can make baby food out of it. Just pull cubes out for the next day and put them in the fridge.

Most of the fruits I blended with milk and baby cereal because the fruits taste a little strong for them at that age as I found out, lol. Boy, they sure do make some funny faces!

She liked it a lot better than jarred baby foods and it was just food I had cooked anyway. It's a lot cheaper in the end.

I didn't think of it that way! It would be cheaper, and not so much work, either!

Oh, I like this suggestion! I don't cook with salt either, and I try to use as many natural and healthy ingredients as possible. It gets the babies used to eating what you eat. Great idea!

It's better if you make your own baby foods because you have a total control on what is put on baby's food. If your baby is prone to allergies, homemade baby food will help you to make sure that there is no allergenic hidden in that food. Example is baked sweet potato, you can boil, steam, then mashed it with a potato masher. There are lots of baby food recipes you can find in the internet and it's not that difficult to prepare.

I made a few things for my son at home, but not many. We weren't eating well enough when he first started eating baby food, for me to make his food. I was working a lot, and it was easier to just grab Taco Bell on the way home for my husband and me. When we actually made veggies at home, I always mashed them up and gave them to our son. But otherwise, he ate out of a can, until he was ready to eat the exact same food in the same form as us.

Depending on what you eat, it would probably save money to make your baby's food. A lot of people that I know that made their own food, also bought a few jars for when they were having food that the baby couldn't have. Or to introduce food that they personally didn't like. That's probably what I will do with my next baby. Since I plan on still being a stay at home mom next time.

I am talking of a practice which i flollowed twenty five years ago, and if my daughter-in-law were to ask me I would give a slightly modified mix of the same as a suggestion. When the child is less than a year old, we used to give some harmless porridge apart from cerelac, farex etc. We had this prepared at home.
Wash raw boiled rice well and then roast it to a golden colour patiently[little by little] and grind this roasted rice in a mixie. This can be stored in an airtight container. Four or five spoonfuls of powder, mixed with water should be cooked on slow flame. Lumps should not be there. Then you can mix this with milk and sugar and serve the child. After the child is 2 years old, Ragi flour can be mixed. This is highly nutritious, filling and very good for the child. A taste has to be cultivated for ragi at a tender age. Rice pudding is not too difficult. You can mash bananas, apples, add milk and sugar and give .This fruit mix should be given as a separate course without mixing this with cooked food. Honey can be added.

I've read not to give honey to babies because it causes botulism.

myLot reputation of 96/100. kalav56 (1900)   ranked 1,306 out of 6,694 in had children  3 years ago

Don't give honey in doses. We used to add 2 drops of honey in bitter medicine and make the child swallow it if there were a need to give medicine. I thought your country may provide unadulterated honey and it may not do any harm to add a teaspoonful. I am talking about very small doses you see. Even the fruit, Only half a banana or a 3 inch piece can be mashed and given. We start semisolids only after the child is 7/8 months old and a small portion of mashed rice and dhal and ghee are given after the first birthday. It is done very ceremoniously on the first birthday, with a pundit chanting special prayers and mantras on the auspicious occasion-it is a grand ceremony to start this for the little one. .

It is the spores in honey which may be bad for babies. IF you use pure honey, it is fine. I've always given honey to my little one, he loves it. We only used one brand (that was Gales) before he was a year old because we new that was pure. Now he's 2 and a half, any brand is fine.

My baby was born in May and is still having just milk to drink. I have heard that it is better to start feeding my baby food when he is six months old. I have seen expensive jars of baby food for sale. I will buy baby rice and mix it with milk for the first food I give to my baby. Luckily his dad really likes cooking and he wants to make him up a selection of baby food jars. I am delighted him wanting to do this. He will start with foods like carrot, apple, apricot and banana.

I used both homemade and shop-bought baby foods. The salt content can be higher in bought products and you know exactly what goes into your homemade food. Making the food at home can be time consuming but I often made up whatever we were having and mashed a bit up. I never add salt to cooking anyway. Now my kids eat the same as us anyway but the way you can get the best of both worlds ie. healthy and convenient, is to mash whatever you're having, well, that's assuming you eat well of course! Just be careful with any foods your baby may not be ready for.

I made my son's baby food, and it wasn't hard. I cooked veggies, put them in the food processor and then freeze in ice cube trays. It is good because you know exactly what goes into it.

As soon as my son was eating finger foods it got easier because I would just cut up whatever we were eating and give it to him to feed himself. He was eating everything we eat by 10 months.

I personally have made my own baby food and it really isn't hard all you have to do is get fresh fruits and vegetables and really smash them up and add juice or water to them that is what I did. I bought organic fruits and vegetables though too. Baby food that you buy in the stores even the organic ones in my opinion has way too many perservatives because organic fruits and vegetables don't last no more than week in my house and if it takes a few days to even get it to the store and stock it then you really only have a day or two to feed them to your baby. It wasn't hard. I would just have to know when my baby is getting hungry and about 10 minutes before I would start doing it.

I do both...but it's mosty home made food for the baby. In the morning when I am pressed for time, I usually open a jar of baby food. But the rest of the day, I give my sonwhat we eat. If I'm making any food specifically for baby, I don't add salt...but if it's meant to be sweet I add some date syrup. Lunch and dinner he has what we have. I put it in the blender (sometimes mix it with milk). He has no problems having it..infact he likes the spicy food more than the store brought one

What is date syrup? I've never heard of it. Thank you for the response!

myLot reputation of 91/100. SViswan (4201)   ranked 345 out of 6,694 in had children  3 years ago

It's just syrup made from dates. We get it in a bottle. It has the consistency of honey and is totally made of dates. I started using it when my baby had constipation (apparently it is good to counter constipation like prunes).
