How to cope when your "baby" gets another year older or hits another milestone?

If you were to ask me what i was doing 7 years ago today it would be i just had my baby shower and i was now being admitted into the hospital for induction of my first child.. what i didnt realize was that it was going to be almost 4 days until i actually gave birth. but he was definelty worth the wait!!!
we just celebrated his birthday over the weekend and it amazes me that ive been his mother for 7yrs that he is who he is because of me, when it comes to my children i get very very emotional and has he was blowing out his birthday candle and opening his present to seeing him enojoying himself with all his quest i had to fight back the tears. does excepting the fact that their growing up ever get any easier or will i be filled with this much emotion every year, every milestone they hit??? how about you are you as emotional as i am or am i over emotional????
