Thinking of giving gifts . . . |
|
Or is there something you would really like to receive? As a four year old, I was certain Santa would bring me an elephant, I am not sure why. It must have been a desire born at the Oklahoma City Zoo. I can remember my sister talking seriously about it to me. She was nine years older, she knew that there was no such person as Santa Claus, but instead she explained the difficulties involved. The elephant would be too big for the sleigh and so forth. No room in the back yard for elephants, the neighbors would not like it.I know I did not get one for Christmas. This story takes place in the "olden days" when grocery stores and gas stations gave green stamps for purchases. When presents were not as lavish but meant something for what they represented in sacrifice and planning. My mom saved her green stamps, pasted them in her books, and got me a stuffed toy that was an elephant for my birthday. He was peach and green. I know how determined I had been to have a real elephant, but this one satisfied whatever that need was, so I guess that I was happy caring for my elephant. It was the thought that made a huge impression on me. Do you remember trading stamps? What purchases did your household make with them?

2. JoyfulOne (4267) | 3 years ago | Green stamps?! Mercy yes, I sure do remember them. And as a matter of fact, I still have 2 full books worth...why I'm saving them I haven't a clue, lol. (I think because it reminds me of simpler times when I was growing up) I don't remember everything we got with them, but I do remember this big cylinder shaped Scotch cooler we got. I still have it and it's almost in perfect shape yet. Then we got the matching plaid coffee thermos that went with it (yep, still have that too lol)
Remember when gas stations used to have the promotions where with each tank you got dishes, glasses, or silverware? I used to have all that up until a few years ago, then I gave it to some family who needed dishware etc. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I haven't thought about green stamps and those freebies in years!

GardenGerty (20546) | 3 years ago | I bought some milk glass glasses at a junktique type sale. They have gold waterfowl on them. I have not decided whether to keep them, as hubby likes them, or to try to sell them on e-bay, as I have yet to have any success there. I wonder if they were premiums from somewhere?

3. ElusiveButterfly (9475) | 3 years ago | I remember my mother bringing them home and we would lick them and put them into books for her. I don't recall any purchases being made with them. Maybe she bought things for herself.

5. theprogamer (7518) | 3 years ago | Is there something I want. The worst part is no one will like my answer. I'd want a little more sanity and a bit of tranquility in the world. Too much chaos in my opinion, and I'd just want it to slow down for a change. Sure its nothing materialistic, its nothing I can keep an own, but it is something I would in fact like to receive and see.
And not to be a spoil sport, I'll answer the question in a more personal matter as well. I'd say... maybe my own MX and ATV stunt track with appropriate vehicles naturally. I really don't need it or anything, but if it has to be something tangible that'd be it.

GardenGerty (20546) | 3 years ago | I would gladly give you sanity and tranquility. It would do us all a lot of good. I would also like the part about slowing down. I want to enjoy this last half of my life. I want you to have fun too, so if I could get it all with green stamps, you would have everything on your wish list.

6. CatsandDogs (5153) | 3 years ago | GardenGerty. You are one brave gal!! LOL You're telling your age with those green trading stamps!! Oh I'm so laughing!! Yesss I remember those days and how I really miss them too because they were the laid back easy going days. My mom saved them too and got a bunch of different things such as pots and pans, towels, toys and so on and on. I wonder why they went out of business or what ever did happen to them? Fond memories that's for sure.

8. drannhh (7582) | 3 years ago | Those little green stamps bring back a flood of mostly forgotten thoughts and images. There were a couple brown-sugar maple leaves in the drawer next to them, some toothpicks, and a little box of food coloring. But I don't remember the family ever actually getting anything for the stamps. Maybe we never saved up enough of them, since we grew most of our own food. I don't even remember where the stamps came from, just that we were trying to save them.

9. catskisses (329) | 3 years ago | Oh, gracious yes, I do remember S&H green stamps lol. My grandma would let us kids put them in the books for her. She bought gifts with them all through the year as well as household items for herself. As for me my favorite gift (yeah, I know it's a bit odd) is a gift certificate, and here where I live, my favorites are Dairy Queen, Michael's craft store and WalMart. When I receive them I rarely use them right away. Instead I save them and use them for those pick-me-up shopping trips, and always use them for something I don't HAVE to have but just want and can't justify the expense as a necessity lol. My Dairy Queen ones get used very quickly because I am a confessed Blizzard junkie:-). WalMart is great cause I can buy something useful or just go and buy a huge steak or expensive food treat for a splurge dinner. Michael's is self-explanatory for any craft junkie like me. I also remember when gifts meant planning and sacrifice. To this day one of my most prized possessions is a 16 volume recipe set my mom got for me. It meant she had to spare that few dollars on a single mom of three's salary and had to do so every week for 16 weeks at Winn Dixie grocery. After 30+ years I still use them and love them and they still occupy a place of honor in any kitchen where I have lived.

10. bestre (1468) | 3 years ago | I havent experienced that. I mean I could not recall thinking of any gifts I wanted santa would give to me. I know that santa does not exist but there is this feeling of hope that santa do exist. What I mean is even if it is not true still you wish that it would be and sometimes helps you get the idea of why not yourself play the role of santa to make other people happy especially children. Well, even if santa does not really exists, he is still an instrument of how people live their lives at present. And hoping that the essence of santa's thoughts is still there and will inspire people in someway.
