I am a member of a P2P filesharing network that exchanges among other things audio files. I decided to search their genres list and see what types of music this network offers. The following is a complete list. Some of these genres sound made up, and some sound like they are subcategories of other categories that are on the list. These are the genres of music that they say they have:

If “they” say that it is so, I guess that I will have to believe them. In fact there are probably a few other categories of music out there that they did not list. It is difficult to believe that it is necessary to have all of these various musical categories. In fact I think that it is more confusing than helpful for there to be such specialization in musical genres. I would think that the majority of music when uploaded by multiple different users, would end up getting mis tagged or improperly categorized in this plethora of options.
