My son was 2.5 when we started and he just didn't get it, then we started again when he was three and withing a week he picked it up straight away. My daughter is nearly 2 and wants to be like her big brother, so she has been whipping he rnappy off. So I started putting her into undies but she hasn't "got" it as yet. I will put her back in nappies, and try again in a few months, she may have got the message by then. By I truly beleive kids are not ready until they are at least three.

2. aseretdd (6864) | 3 years ago | My niece was four when she became fully potty trained... she was afraid of going inside the toilet or sit on the toilet bowl... but then my mother was very patient in potty training her... she even bought her the small potty trainer... then after a year of persistance and patience... my mother and niece were both successfull...

3. msaunderson (113) | 3 years ago | First off, calm down. Children will potty train when they are ready. Also, do not be suprised that if you do potty train him that he suddenly decides not to use the potty when baby comes. Often, when children see a baby getting attention and their diapers changes, the older child will regress to get more attention. You just have to take your time with it. My son was not easy to potty train, but seemed to learn immediately when he found out he could stand up to pee. All the sudden, he felt like a big boy and was magically potty trained when I started letting him stand up. So, you may want to try different techniques, but he will train when he is ready.

4. toni_nakama (2292) | 3 years ago | Hi there. A kid is ready for potty training when he is able to hold his bladder. However, holding his bladder or urine until it's time to release it needs actual training too. To start, just let him get use to wearing underwear instead of nappy. Tell him to tell you when he needs to pee or go to the toilet. This needs lots of patience from you my friend, lol! as cleaning and wiping your floor every two hours or so will require your time. In time, perhaps few weeks, he will get use to holding his bladder and then start to learn to tell when he needs to go to the toilet. My three year old daughter is still in this training stage. It's really hard, but we'll get there. Goodluck!*smiles*

6. Karinne (876) | 3 years ago | Hi there DSchwarten, I didn't use a potty with my daughter, she went straight to the toilet at the age of 2. They will show signs of when they are ready, letting you know when they are doing it in their nappy and follow you to the toilet etc.

7. lpetges (2314) | 3 years ago | i have 3 grown children and all were trained by at least 15 months or so,, just after walking well. They used cloth diapers in those days, and my theory is that if your not liking how it feels to have a wet diaper on then you want to be trained! They make diapers today so that you barely know if they are wet! and those pull up things- just keep diapers on them if thats the case! i thought we were all so worried about the environment anyway=doesn't plastic stay in the ground for like 30 years or something??? kids are smart,, they are just little big people,, so if you had a wet cloth diaper on, instead of a plastic absorbant one,, you would probly train a little quicker! just my opinion!

8. Amberina (1405) | 3 years ago | When I was potty training my sons what worked for me was putting cheerios in the little potty or the toilet and having him pee on them to try an sink them. I know it's silly but it worked I couldn't keep them out of the bathroom then as they got older they learned the fine art of peeing on trees lol. One time my oldest son was potty training and we where out on a picnic and he was playing at the swings well the little guy had to go so he went to the nearest tree lol. Little kids are so cute. Good luck. -Amber

9. carolbee (6811) | 3 years ago | Our daughter recently had the same situation. She started to train our grandson before her other baby was born. It didn't work so well so I suggested to wait and try after the baby was born. He will be 3 in January and suddenly has an interest now that he has a baby in the house who does wear diapers. Sometimes he does use the toilet and other times he has no interest. When he's uncomfortable enough from being wet, he will discover life is better to wear dry pull-up's.
My daughter often asks if he needs to use the bathroom just as a simple reminder. Kids get all involved with television or toys and forget they need to stop and do what's important until after the fact.
This is probably not the best idea for your plumbing but it works. Cheerios dropped in the toilet to be used as a target.
I wouldn't worry until he's closer to 4. There could be accidents even after a child enters school but most often at night.
We had one daughter who reverted back to wetting once the next child was born. Eventually it all works out well and life is good.
Good luck and enjoy every minute you can with your kids. They are a wonderful gift from God.

10. chaime (900) | 3 years ago | hmm.. children usually goes potty in their own time, my son is 2 1/2 years old, he still wears diapers at night and will not poop without diapers on. Slowly but surely we are helping him overcome this, by delaying putting on his diapers as long as possible, we cannot actually force them, as you said, they will just cry or it will even be a bigger problem if it traumatizes him and makes him don't wanna go potty. Continue to encourage him and prod him, but don't force him, always remind him where to go when he needs to go and he'll eventually learn.
