Vinyl records...  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457) 5 years ago

Yesterday I went to a record and CD fair and I bought 12 records. I bought some great stuff like The Beatles, Neil Young, Hawkwind and The Chocolate Watch Band. I even bought a brand new Eddie Cochran record which is still in the shrink wrap. I love vinyl records, I can hear things in vinyl that I can't hear in CD's. There's some percussion on Neil Youngs "Comes A Time" album that I never noticed before.

I've listened to 5 of the records so far and they're in good condition, apart from one of The Hawkwind records which skips a groove. Apart from that I'm pretty happy with my purchase:) I know CD's aren't as likely to get scratched but when they do they're unplayable. At least when vinyl skips a groove or has a scratch you can still listen to the rest of record.

Does anyone else think vinyl is cool?

Hi crispeater, I wish I'd known you 3 years ago when we moved from a big house to a smaller one. I had a record album collection, close to 300, 33's...
About 200 of them where in excellent condition as we only played once (recorded on cassette tapes), and put up.
There was a special edition of Elvis, The Eagles, The Beatles (which I am sure are worth good money) Almost anything you could think of :)
I gave them to a young man that is a family friend and is loved very much by me. He does some DJ work, and was intending on recording them. He also collects record albums.
The younger ones now a days do not even know what "vinyl" is.
We used to put a quarter on the needle head when playing the scratched ones... keeps them from skipping :)

It sounds like you had a great collection. The friend you gave them to must have been pleased :) I'm sure the Beatles records would be worth a lot of money in good condition. I saw The Beatles "red" album for sale yesterday for 40 euro (which is about $57 US money). It was a rare pressing though, it was on red vinyl. I saw a lot of great records there. If I had have had another 300 euro yesterday I would have spent it.

I almost forgot to mention that I also bought my favourite ever album on vinyl (Relics by Pink Floyd). :)

:)) I still say you were born in the wrong decade!
Now I'm trying to rack my brain, and remember the Beatles albums (names)... you have to understand I grew up with the Beatles, and were pretty sick of them, not my most treasured!
I AM and always have been a HUGE fan of The Eagles, and I had 6-8 albums of them, their classic Eagle skull, and there were some that had the "firebird" on the album (the record part) they were VERY cool.
Now I have CD's :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

I grew up with The Beatles too. We only had a three bedroom house between my parents and me and my five brothers and sisters so I had to share a room with my brother. My brother had Beatles posters all over the room and was always listening to them or John Lennon. I tried my best not to like The Beatles because they always reminded me of how I didn't have my own bedroom and couldn't play my own music or hang up my own posters. I got past that eventually and grew to love The Beatles though :) They're not my favourite band but they're in my top 10.

Vinyl rocks! I love that little scratchy sound that vinyl gives off. I don't know what else to call it. It gives a softness to the music that you don't get with CDs. Old time jazz and blues just don't sound the same on CD as they did on vinyl. Nina Simone has a sound that would melt your soul on vinyl that is lost on CD. Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, all the greats sound so much sweeter to the ear when they played off vinyl. CDs are great, but they lack that timeless quality that you get from good vinyl. Even Duran Duran (my faves) sound better on vinyl to me. I remember being a teenager and having tons of records. I had Duran Duran, The Outfield, The Alarm, The Cure and so many more. I had red, blue, green and even a purple vinyl pressing of some albums. Anyone care to guess what that purple pressing was? :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

I assume you mean static (the crackly sound) rather than actual scratches. I agree that certain music just doesn't sound the same on CD as it does on vinyl. CDs are more durable but they seem to have a more 'digital' sound. There's certain frequencies that CDs don't play because the manufacturers originally thought the human ear couldn't pick them up. And when a CD does get scratched it's useless.

If I had to guess what your purple vinyl was I'd say Purple Rain by Prince. I'm probably wrong though :)

myLot reputation of 98/100. vokey9472 (1134)  5 years ago

Yeah, I meant the staticy sound that vinyl tends to have. I couldn't think of the right word so I said scratchy. Also, like you said, CDs don't always have all the sounds and tones that the vinyl recording do.

Yes, it was Purple Rain. Cost me a small fortune back then, but so worth it. Ended up selling it for way more than I paid for it in the late 90s. I had a wedding to pay for and needed the money. :)

The marvels of new technology. If a CD gets scratched, it can't be played? What? I didn't know. The only reason I have the 10 CDs I do have is because they only came in CD form.i am so glad that I didn't try to replace the vinyl i have. It sounds like it will last longer than the CDs.

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

I've had some CDs that were scratched, they sound like a scratched record only even more annoying. If a record is scratched you can just move the needle past the scratch, with a CD you have to stop the entire album and take it out :(
Vinyl sounds great but you have to more careful when handling it. Sadly most vinyl on sale now is second hand so you never know what you're getting. I bought a copy of Abbey Road and it's in pretty poor condition :(

Bummer.I have been lucky, I bought the Beatles album that has the song Michelle on it at a garage sale and it was in great condition. But I know what you mean buying second hand. It is like what Forrest Gump said, " You never know what you are going to get."

Sadly we have had real difficulty in finding a decent record player. I think vinyl has much more character and are much more enjoyable to listen to than CDs.

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

I bought a pretty good record player in Argos about four years ago. You need a stereo with an auxiliary input to use it. It sounds great though and it was reasonably cheap :)

You can't beat vinyl, I even like watching it spin around on the turntable. Cool avatar by the way, I can tell you like music :)

My partner has a huge collection of vinyl, around 1,000 albums in all. So long as they are looked after and kept in good condition they will give years of listening pleasure. We are always looking for old vinyl to add to the collection.

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

Sounds like a great collection. I have thousands of CDs but I don't have much vinyl sadly :( I'm thinking of giving up buying CDs totally and saving my money for the next record fair that comes to my town.

I still have my vinyl records from years ago. But over the years my record player had died. And being a single mother for the past 18 years. A new record player was not in the budget. Two years ago my daughter bought me a beautiful record player for Christmas. Now I can listen to my old records and buy new ones when I want.

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

That's great that you got a gift of a record player. Four years ago I had nothing to play my records on so I bought myself a turntable. I hate having records and nothing to play them on.

I thought they didn't make vinyl records anymore. It is amazing to find in this day and age.

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

They still make vinyl but it's hard to get. The Red Hot Chili Peppers last album was released on vinyl.

I do think vinyl is cool. I used to listen to my father's collection before the player died of old age. The sound that came out from vinyls cannot be compared to any cd or dvd that we have nowadays. The quality are so much different and I wish that one day, somebody would invent something close to that. So far, I don't know anything that could produce the same sound...

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

I don't think anything else sounds as good as vinyl. CDs sound too digital compared to records.

I have a handful of 45's from when I was growing up that I collected and Hubby had like 2 big boxes of albums when we met...don't know what ever happened to them...but other than that all our music is either on CD or the pc's. One thing I like about CD's is that I can burn a copy and put it away so if the one I'm using gets scratched I can just burn a new one.

HAPPY EASTER!!
