What Is Love |
| |
| No, it's not love that i'm talking about but rather, what is your favourite love song or song that describes love or falling in love. Here then are some of the love songs i liked, in no particular order and language: Ella Fitzgerald's oh-so-tender voice in "Someone To Watch Over Me" makes me wish for the good old days. Other love songs of hers that deserved the same mention are "I've Got A Crush On You", "How Long has This Been Going On", "Soon", "Maybe", "But Not For Me", "Paper Moon". Her voice is from another era; a time that we could only find in music of yesteryear and old pictures of long ago. Listening to Karen Carpenter's singing "Close To You" is like listening to an angel sing. The same goes for "Bless The Beasts And The Children". The Beatles timeless classic 'Hey Jude' is brilliant in its simple message of love and encouragement. It's a single which was not in any of their studio albums. u2's "One Tree Hill" is a tribute to one of their crew and friend. The words to the song are both poetic and touching. "We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill. As the day begs the night for mercy. Your sun so bright it leaves no shadows, only scars. Carved into stone on the face of the earth...I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky. And the moon has turned red over One Tree Hill". "Hunting High And Low" by a-ha, with its passionate vocal and dramatic string section is a poignant song about longing. Don't you just love songs about longing? Stone Roses "She Bangs The Drums" feels like falling in love for the first time (although some may argue it could also be like falling in love with Ecstacy!). The interplay between the lead guitar and drums is just remarkable. Eighties white-soul pop group, Breathe lead singer David Glasper has a crystal clear voice and this song showcases it perfectly-"How Can I Fall?". Although the materials in their debut album, "All That Jazz" (from which this song is taken) was just average, this is still a great song, if only for that voice. The Hollies "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" is a sixties favourite. Its universal theme of brotherhood love is rarely touch upon in today's so-called love song. The opening line "The road is long, with many a winding turn" always gives me goosebump. Although he did not produced any groundbreaking work in a long time, Bryan Adams "Straight From The Heart" is an affecting love song. Excellent drum sound, with ringing snare (just the right amount of reverb) and the deepest kick-drum i had ever heard in recorded music, barring Led Zeppelin's. And any old songs from Air Supply (ya, i am a sucker for soppy love song and no one makes them more saccharine than these two Aussies, except Barry Manilow maybe) is fine with me. "Now And Forever" is one of them. So syrupy sweet it could make me swoon, haha. But the best love songs for me are still those of Hong Kong pop singers, Alan Tam and Sam Hui. I had all of Alan's albums from his late 70's and the whole of 80's era. Being young and impressionable, his songs somehow appeals to me. Even all of my classmates liked him as a singer. There are too many to mentioned but i would single out "The Root of Love" and "Most Beloved You" (both literal translation from their chinese title) as pet preference. Love makes a very good subject in music, if not the best subject. What is your favourite love song then? And why do you like it? Of course there could be no reason at all for liking a song. Now why don't i find today's love song appealing at all? Video link: http://www.freewebs.com/joshua-w/music.htm | | | | | |

| | Today's music appeals to the emotion for reason that most of it are expressions of their real experiences. Some are even expressions of unexpressed feelings. Why are some lovers so afraid to express their feelings? What is stopping them? Isn't it that real love should be expressed? Why are some denying it? So there goes the love songs.. | | | | | | |

| | Oh, you missed some good ones - "One less bell to answer" (this is about a love that was lost by 5th dimension) and then there was Cass elliot - "Dream a little dream of me" - such a beautiful voice - too bad she died so young and "Dedicated to the one I love" - Mama's and the Papas. There was also 'My Girl' I think by the temptations, 'The way I want to touch you' Captain and Tennille. And 'killing me softly' by Roberta flack | | | | | | |

| | Hmm, i may have missed more because the ones i'd written down are the first to come to mind. "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" was also sung by Ella Fitzgerald. As for The Mamas And The Papas, the only song i'd heard from them is 'California Dreaming'. Of course, I liked Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" so much more than the one performed by hip-hop group, The Fugees which was quite devoid of emotion, if you ask me. | | | |

| | Speaking of Abba and Boney M...I remember the first English language album i bought was an Abba's compilation. This was in the 70's. Of course i still like their music. Who could forget "Dancing Queen", "Waterloo", "Super Trooper", "Eagles" and there are so much more. Everyone of their song is good when i listen to them again. As for Boney M, this was played to death in the radio when i was in elementary school. "Daddy Cool", "Ma Baker", "Sunny", "Rivers of Babylon", "Belfast", "Felicidad", "Mary's Boy Child", "Hooray, It's A Holiday". I could still hum the tune even after all these years. I feel like i'm getting old already. Sigh... | | | |

| | For me love is blind, unconditionally a mutual feeling. Love is honest and kind and most especially if you do respect it shows love to one person no matter what it is. Well, love really rules in all individuals. And if you ask me about it, one i can tell that there is no definite answer on it only gods knows what is it. | | | | | | |

| | Hi joshua_w! Wow, you really know your songs! I have my favorite love songs too but I am not sure if I remember the titles and the singers correctly. Songbird by Barbara Streisand, I just love the way she sang it and the lyrics of the song. Gosh, now that I am thinking about them, I can't remember the titles and the singers but I am humming the tune. hehe.. I think I will just get back to you once I go over my cds again. Take care and have a nice day. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Mimpi. I'll let you know that i liked The Carpenters too. Very much actually. Even their happier tunes like "Top Of The World", "Mr Postman" sounded a little sad because of Karen's many-layered voice. The Stevie Wonder song is called "I Just Called To Say I Love You". A little sugary sweet but it's okay i guess, haha. You have a nice day. And if you're reading this before tomorrow, a Happy Diwali to you. I'm sure you're celebrating with your friends and family. | | | |

| | It's because Diwali is also celebrated by Hindus in my country. Just fyi, Indians are also a majority race in where i stayed. The celebration here is called Deepavali. I think it's the same, only different name? Enlighten me if you have the time, ok. Take care. | | | |

| | Joshua, you are right! Both Diwali and Deepavali are the same. Initially it was called Deepavali and now its shortened to Diwali. Deepavali sounds nicer, I feel. I am glad that you know so much of hindu festival. Deepavali , as you must be knowing, is the festival of lights and we burn crackers and burn lamps and have great fun. Every household perfoms pujas. We, Bengalees, perform Kali puja where we worship goddess Kali. I am not much into puja though, neither do I burst crackers. Itthe sound and the black air makes me sick. However, I enjoy the lights which are being displayed i the sky. No wonder, we end up having a severe level of pollution after Diwali. I find no justification in having fun at the cost of our lives! HAPPY DEEPAVALI TO YOU AND YOUR LOVELY WIFE. PS: Thanks for understanding that I have been having a hard time sqeezing in more time for myLot. | | | |

| | Mimpi, we have many cultures and religions practised here, so we have a duty to know at least a little about the various celebration and festivities of my fellow countrymen. Last year i visited a colleague's house during Deepavali. As for the crackers, well, we do have them here too. But i prefer the fireworks display in the sky. Regards to you for spending some time in sharing your account of celebrating a major festival in your country. Appreciate that. I learn something new already. The word "puja" is also used by the Malays in my country. If not mistaken, i think it means the same as in "to worship". Maybe the word was used when merchants from your country came here to trade in ancient times. And thanks for the good wishes too. You have a good day and be happy always. | | | |

| | Hi,joshua. I do listen to some beautiful songs though my knowledge of them is not very great. My favorite song is "Lemon Tree" by Ganden Of Paradise. It's not very famous but I like it at the first time. The feeling , you know, is beyond my word. It's just like you hide at somewhere watching your lover wait for you with anxiety.Pure, warm and beautiful . By the way, i like the song "close to you" too. | | | | | | |
