 A new agreement with homeland security and the NY governor is allowing anyone with a valid passport to get a driver's license.
" Under the compromise, New York will produce an "enhanced driver's license" that will be as secure as a passport. It is intended for people who soon will need to meet such ID requirements, even for a short drive to Canada.
A second version of the license will meet new federal standards of the Real ID Act. That law is designed to make it much harder for illegal immigrants or would-be terrorists to obtain licenses.
A third type of license will be available to undocumented immigrants.
Spitzer has said this ID will make the state more secure by bringing those people "out of the shadows" and into American society, and will lower auto insurance rates.
Those licenses will be clearly marked to show they are not valid federal ID."
New York has between 500,000 and 1 million undocumented immigrants, many of whom are driving without a license and car insurance or with fake driver's licenses, Spitzer said in September when he announced his executive order."
If they are already using fake licenses, what is going to change? I'm shocked that New York's governor is doing this after their experience with 9/11.

There are a lot of people who don't want this to happen, so if I'm right that it hasn't been made a law, just remember that it's not too late to fight it. Other states have tried this, including Tennessee, and it failed.

At least they will have them coming out in droves to become documented. Yeah, they are giving them a license..so? They would be driving without licenses if they had a mind to...so at least they will be legal drivers...and since we are going to have open borders anyway might as well start somehow...and getting them licenses is a great way to document them.

If they already have a license that's not legal, why would they care to take the time and spend more money to get one that is legal? There is also no way, to my knowledge, to make sure that they are giving an address that they truly live at. There have been stories in the media already how citizens get in an accident with an illegal, and the illegal was at fault, and they gave a P.O. box for their address. There is also no way, to my knowledge, to make sure that the illegals keep their insurance that they will be required to purchase when they get the license. Funny thing is, cars are not supposed to be sold to anyone without proof of insurance, but yet you can read in the media almost every day about illegals who cause an accident and have no insurance. Hey, I guess someone else is buying the vehicle for them, or they are buying it from a place that doesn't want to obey the law either. As for having an open border, where do you get that idea? That is not going to happen. People are fighting it now and will continue to fight it. Giving them a license will not document them, since they like to lie about where they really live, and move around so much. To be truly documented, they need to be a legal citizen, and stop getting all of the free services they are, and stop disrespecting the traditions of this country. | |

| OreoCookie3 (18227) | 3 years ago | Well you don't know that the open borders won't pass. People are fighting it, but you know some are not... and if it does pass, the illegals will bring in money. They will spend their money here and that must make merchants really happy... and the government to allow them and encourage them to come here.
If NY is willing to do this, there must be something in it for them.. and I do believe they will have the possible problems of true addresses worked out... The government is not going to do anything that does not benefit it. I'm sure the government could give a rat's A$$ for the illegal, but they benefit from them being here...or they wouldn't be here at all. They are tolerated for money they generate in taxes. And don't tell me they don't pay taxes...because every time we make a purchase we pay sales taxes. This country probably has more illegal aliens than co*ck roaches... take that number and multiply it by whatever percentage the sales tax is times how much the average person would spend in a day.... that is a lot of money.

Take for example the cost of a driver's license, then you add on the yearly sticker for your plates, and who knows what else. It just sounded to me that you were for illegals. I certainly don't denigrate your opinion. I just can't understand why anyone would think positively in regards to illegals, except for the positive aspect they play where the government and money is concerned. I never said they didn't pay taxes either. I know they do. I work with probably about 400 of them, so I know what they do for and to our country and government. | |

You can see them and know that if they do anything to you, you will have to pay for it. Diplomats don't pay insurance.This way everyone will know that this driver isn't a citizen yet and may don't have insurance. It doesn't matter what rules we try, if a terrorist wants anything, they will find a way to get it.

If we get caught without a valid liscence - we get a ticket....If we get caught without car insurance - we get a ticket. | 9. JaLuvYa (77) | 3 years ago |  I'm from New York and I tell you, the majority of legal New Yorkers are upset about this. But I'll tell you what this is really about. When you apply for a driver's license, you also register to vote. All you have to show when you vote... is your license.
If Spitzer had run for office with this non-sense he would not have won. But if all illegals can vote with these new licenses, then pretty soon we will have open borders because they can vote the candidates in that will make it happen for them.
I can't believe he's trying to pull this. It's scary because he has Michael Chernoff from Homeland Security on board with this apparently as well as NYS DMV.
They are advertising it here in New York as a plan to:
a.)create safer roads
b.)increase security
c.)Better information
d.)and lower insurance rates
They are actively trying to clear up what they call "misunderstandings" about what they are trying to do.
