A third of food thrown away. |
| |
| In the UK they are trying to highlight the amount of food waste that is generated. Up to one third of food is thrown away. This is so crazy! Not only is it a waste of food that other people could have but also a waste of money. Just imagine if your grocery bill was one third less, you'd be happy. We try to waste very little and what is left over is either given to the dog, our hens or goes in the composter. How do you try to keep food waste to a minimum? | | | | | |

| | Wow, that is a big waste. In my family we hardly ever throw food out. I have a family of 5 so the meals I make there is normally leftovers. So what I do is about every third day we have leftover night. I pull all the leftovers out from the past three days and everyone picks what they want. When I do this I never end up throwing any food out. | | | | | | |

| | I do the same as you but I also have a goat who cleans up what the dog doesn't...problem is he likes the compost too. LOL. I take little notice of "best before" dates and try to plan my meals according to what needs to be eaten first. | | | | | | |

| | Well, we have four kids and a dog, so there is very little food waste in our house. Sometimes I would cook too much meat, but that wouldnt get wasted because it is always used for sandwhiches or paninis in the evenings. Or during the night when my husband is up and about and gets the munchies!!!!!! | | | | | | |

| | I do try, but things just get away from us sometimes. It happens. But I'd rather throw away spoiled food than take a chance on eating something that might make me sick. And I don't believe in giving my pets human foods - onions and garlic are very bad for cats and I don't think the roomie can cook without garlic. | | | | | | |

| | I hate wasting money and food. It is not a good habit. Alough someone can afford it, there are still many poor people who get little food everyday. In my country, it often happend. When someone does not like the food and eat little, they just leave it on table. I really do not like that. | | | | | | |

| | simply buy a bit less than what you feel like buying when you shop for groceries. We are not in walking distance of the supermarkets and so I have to add we plan our shopping so that my hubby does not do that more than twice a week. We have a little pantry added to the kitchen and put all the canned goods there and we have quite a big combined freezer and fridge. Sometimes so its a temptation to buy more than what you really need. We also keep some things in the fridge and pantry for emergencies when you simply forget the milk or other items. As I come from the background of a WW II Refugee family from what is now Poland, Silesia, waste of food was unknown to me at home. Okay sometimes bread turned mouldy in the summertime but very rarely. Dry bread was used for cooking, and there was a non written rule I still observe now in my own 40s, when you see something that is expired first open and test and only throw away when its really rotten. I know a lot of people who will just look at the sell by date, and say, this is one or two days over the date so it goes out without looking first. But I always open milk products and other foods first and see what is still edible when it once in a while happens here. I also like cooking from scratch and that saves money, too. | | | | | | |

| | Stale bread is great for making bread pudding - dry bread soaked and then mixed with fruit, sugar, egg and baked until solid. I love it and it isn't too unhealthy if you use up your wholemeal bread and throw in lots of fruit! | | | |

| | Hi I am diabetic and so I am happy about every little bit of bread I am allowed to eat so it really never gets stale in our household. My husband buys a loaf of bread for me, has it sliced in the bakery and I weigh the individual helpings for a day and freeze the bread then. It works wonderful, take the bread out in the evening and in the morning its all fresh and ready to eat. | | | |
