I am reading David Copperfield for the very first time and I am in my early 50's. I have never taken the time to read the classics before but have gone with the well known authors like Agatha Christie, Mary Higgins Clark and other suspense writers but have never done the classics so I think it's about time I did some reading from The Masters. I have just finished the original Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol so decided to stay with Dickens and read David Copperfield and then follow that with Nicholas Nicklberry I intersperse that with doing word puzzles and computer work and my family life. I would be lost for something to do if I was to just sit and do nothing, my poor old brain needs a regular workout. Have you read the classics?

I have read some of the classics and I'm looking forward to reading some more of them. I recently read Oliver Twist and I really liked it. Some of my favorites are Grapes of Wrath, 1984 and To Kill a Mockingbird. I have a few that I would like to read too. I would like to read Of Mice and Men, As I Lay Dying, A Christmas Carol and The Sound and the Fury. They do take a little more time and brain power but so far I've been pleased with my readings.

Have you read 'Daughters of the Storm'? Right now I can't remember who wrote it but it really is well worth reading. It tells of the lives of 4 women who lived during the time of the French Revolution and once you start it you will find it hard to put down.

I actually had an "I haven't read any Dickens" moment a few years ago and bought 4 books on ebay. A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol and I think the 4th one was called Hard Life or something like that. I loved Great Expectations and Christmas Carol. Tale of Two Cities was really dry and boring to me. I couldn't get into the other... I didn't get more than 15 pages into it before putting it down and moving on to something else.

I have heard that Great Expectations is a good book too so I will be adding that to my reading list.

I'm also huge fan of Agatha cristie. I have read her few books but all those were mind blowing.
And about charles dickens he is my forever favourite writer. David copperfield is really nice book and while reading this book I was so touched. When I read it for the first time tears were rolling down in some part of the story. It is really good.
And I must say that christmas Carol is also the another book that I like so much.

Are you interested in reading good. There are a lot of resources in the internet where you can read a lot of free ebooks classics.Have read Arthur conandoyle's sherlock homes. If you read agatha christy you should definitely read it.You will simply get addicted.Just go to gutenberg.org you will find a big collection of classic works in text format.I have downloaded almost all of the classics from the site.If you further need to expand the horizon of reading and if you can spend a little it is better to be a member of the reader's digest club. For cheap rate they will send you books worth many dollars to you every month.

I had a period when I couldn't get enough of the classics.

You've made a good choice with Dickens. I would say that Great Expectations is my favourite of his. You won't be disappointed when you erad that, it's wonderful. Definitely one of my favourites of all time.

Thomas Hardy and the Brontes are great, too; Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and Tess of the D'urbevilles are among my favourite reads of all time.

AH.. the classics. I had to read quite a few. Some because of school, some because I was curious, some because I had them at home and it was easy to just pick them up and read.
I confess that not all were read to the end, not matter how well recommended they came:) But I must say that same got me really interested.
It depends on the literary style for me. I don't like long narratives and some subjects, so for example I might struggle to finish War and Peace, and breeze trough a Tale of two Cities.
I was never able to enjoy Shakespeare at first, for example because I was given the heavy tragedy or history books to read at school I was bored to tears with Romeo and Juliet or Antony and Cleopatra, but once I got hold of his comedy works I loved it ( twelfth night and midnight's summer dream are some of my favorites but I liked almost all his comedies).
The same with Camoes - considered the biggest portuguese poet. I couldn't get myself to enjoy his greatest poems and was almost ready to not read anything from him again until I found his sonets - the ones that had nothing to do with the most famous book LOL= and then I loved them so much he is now one of my favorite poets.
But I gave a fair try to most classics.
As for Charles Dickens... I liked many of the themes he used but not particularly his writing style.

Classical books are my favourite books. In fact I have taken the nickname Steerforth from the David Copperfield. It is a great novel, I like Charles Dickens. However I like to read classica Italian books, I read them for the university and I read because I love them.
