my friend is having sign up problems

I don't know how mylot works but there could be an IP block or something. I think also one needs email confirmation so they should check the email they registered with. If its the email link not working right, try using another browser. I was able to sign up fine on firefox. Or it could be something a little more lame, like a username being taken for example. Or the email could be registered already (again, your friend may have to check their email, possibly their spam/bulk folder).
