Widows of India... email this discussion to a friend?

Yesterday, i was able to watch a movie about the widos of India... i was shocked and bothered about the reality of how these women are treated... my heart is in pain just thinking about how they live their lives when their husbands died...

I am not an expert in tradition and culture but this kind of centruries old tradition is just cruel... i hope those people fighting for the better treatment of these widows succeed...

This sort of reality always make me think that eventhough i live in a poor country where corruption is rampant... i am still lucky that i am not binded by this kind of tradition...

What tradition are you speaking of? I have no idea how the Indian widows live. Could you elaborate?

Well in India when a woman becomes a widow she has three options...

1. Throw herself to the funeral pyre and die with her husband...
2. I the family permits... marry the husband's younger brother... which is very rare...
3. Live a life of purity, chastity, and poverty... which is like the only option...they are left by the family to fend for themselves... most likely beg for food...

I read article in which eventhoug there are laws protecting the widows of India... people still follow the tradition of how to treat these women... they are treated as the lowest of the low in Indian society...

That sounds twisted and sick. What if there are children to be cared for?

It is sick... but then what if they widow is just a child... child marriage is still practiced in India...although there are laws forbidding this...

I saw a film on that subject some time ago, when although it was illegal for families to require widows to hurl themselves on the funeral pyres of their late husbands, the inlaws often arranged for kitchen "accidents" to happen where the widow's clothing would catch fire, resulting in her death, especially in poor families where the wife was looked upon as just another mouth to feed even though she did all the work. It was just heartbreaking to know that although the authorities were well aware that the deaths were not accidental, they did nothing to prevent them or prosecute the murderers. Now, I understand that in most areas this kind of crime is prosecuted. I hope that is true and that it acts as a deterrent to this kind of senseless cruelty. It is hard for me to comprehend a mother-in-law doing this, especially since all of the Indian women I have met have been so sweet and lovely.

Old habits die hard, though. I once asked an Indian friend and colleague whose father had had 3 wives why his mother who had been widowed for many years did not remarry now that she was in the US, and in all seriousness he said because he would kill her if she did. He felt that would have been his duty as the oldest son. He had become so "American" in many ways, but it was shocking to see how very obstinate and different he could be in this regard. So even the wealthy widows who are free from material want lack any freedom in the sense we know it, even when they live in our own neighborhoods.

It would be a terrible thing to have to spend your whole existence in fear of your own family, in fear of the ones who should be protecting and loving and nurturing you.

That sort of accident did not even come to my mind... i really don't understand why some people still follow this age old tradition that is no longer at par with the current time... so now i consider myself very very very lucky...

Hello aseretdd,I would like to state that these traditions and customs that you saw in the movie, in my country, was something which was followed a long time ago.Now these practices are no longer there and the government has banned "sati" where the widow jumped into the funeral pyre of her husband.I agree women, especially widows had a raw deal in my country in ancient times, but the present generation has been shielded from such cruel practices thanks to the timely act of the government and social organizations...

Today women in India are given equal education and right in par with men in all areas of life and widows no longer have to follow the old barbarain customs.Infact they are alloted the job of the husband in government offices, provided they are qualified and so they can continue to run the family without much hardship.

Education and social awareness has uplifted the status of women and widows in India, and you can take what you saw in the movie as a bad night mare which our unfortunate counterparts had to go through in olden times, but which has been thankfully banished from our society now.....

I am glad that the government has taken action to protect the widows of your country... but as the saying goes...old habits die hard... i was able to research that some or a lot still follow the tradition of casting out widows... gone are the days when they are thrown to the funeral pyre but they still live a life of neglect and poverty... i think it will take a strong will and acceptance before these women are freed from the life that tradition has set for them...

Thanks for the response...

Well aseretdd, may be a few families belonging to certain religions in some remote villages in India may be following this system, but women at large, especially modern women,no longer follow this tradition. As you have said, old habits die hard.Hence some women, voluntarily try to follow the old customs and deny themselves certain privileges when their husband dies. But the modern Indian woman no longer allows others to tread on her dignity or ill treat her in the name of religion and customs....

I am glad that the women in your country are now enjoying the rights that women in the past were deprived of... i just hope that the government would go out of its way to enforce the laws even in the most remote part of your country...

You have a beautiful very country with a beutiful history...

myLot reputation of 98/100. mithrarao (1366)   ranked 424 out of 35,144 in people  3 years ago

If the government enforced the rules in the remotest part of the country and the people co-operated,then my country will definitely become a paradise on earth....But alas,it is the selfishness of politicians and the refusal of some illiterate common people to adapt to positive changes that is a main hinderance to development in my country...sigh......

Well, i think that is universal problem... it is happening everywhere even in my country...

Hello!
I've read an article about the widows in India and it's sad, I couldn't believe it actually. It's disheartening that when you become a widow in India you become an outcast in the society. Some widows are being thrown out of family homes as if they're evil woman who caused the death of her husband. Women in India are often married off at a young age and no education, they usually lack skills and knowledge to take care of themselves and know their rights. It's just nice to know that there are groups and foundations who helps these widows.

ciao! c",)

It is indeed sad... but at least... the Indian Government are doing something to stop this kind of oppression... there are already laws that give widows the same rights as other women... but then the problem is the strict implementation of these laws...
