Good News about my boy! |
|
This is an update about my infant son: Some of you know from my previous discussion what I've been dealing with, for those who are just tuning in: my baby son has hip dysplasia and has been in a contraption called a Pavlik Harness for six weeks now to correct the problem. Today we went to the pediatric orthopedic, located an hour from my home, to see how my baby has been progressing. Good News everybody! His hip is stabilizing and now he only needs to wear the gear when he goes to sleep at night. This will go on for two weeks and then he will sleep in it every other night for two weeks and then be re-evaluated and hopefully he will no longer have to wear it at that point. Until today he has spent 19 hours a day in it. For those of you unfamiliar with the Pavlik Harness, it is a device used to hold a baby's legs out and to the sides in a frog like position to stabilize an infant's loose hip by deepening the socket of the joint with time. The harness has straps which go over the baby's shoulders, around the chest and then down to the legs with the feet going into booties. Straps are then adjusted to pull the baby's legs into the desired position. It is kind of a hassle to change diapers with all the straps and I had to buy a special car seat to accommodate my baby when he wears his gear, but these turned out to be minor inconveniences when you think about the payoff - a child who will not have a very good chance at a normal childhood once the hip is corrected. my baby boy must realize that we got good news, because he has been smiling a lot more than usual today and he even laughed out loud for the first time! Thank you all my mylot friends for your support, friendship, prayers and kind words throughout my journey with my son. I love you all.

2. redyellowblackdog (3994) | 3 years ago | Congratulations.
Soon he will be running all over the house, you will not be able to catch or keep up with him and you will not believe he ever had such a problem.:-)
Good for you and your son.

MSV1313 (2243) | 3 years ago | Thank you! He is growing so fast that soon he will be towering over me and he is so strong that not only will he be running around the house he will be able to carry it on his back! My seven and a half pound at birth NICU infant is now a hale and hearty lad tipping the scales at well over twelve pounds! At 2 and a half months old he is in size nine months clothing! He wears an outfit once or twice and then he is too big for it! I have piles of baby clothes that he got too big for before he could even wear it. Baby like to eat!

Now you can look forward to the days when you tell him to sit down, slow down, keep still....LOL
Seriously, though....that is very good news. And the nice thing about babies is that he won't remember the stupid harness when he gets older.

MSV1313 (2243) | 3 years ago | I can't tell you how happy I am for my sweet baby. It's a good thing he is not going to be needing it as much because lately he is losing patience with it. He is so strong that he can force his legs to go where he likes despite the harness being on. The thing is supposed to put pressure on the baby's shoulders which will deter him from moving in a manner contrary to what is deemed benificial for his condition by making him uncomfortable, but my boy is so powerful that he moves whatever way pleases him, restraints be damned! He actually forced the straps off of him todaay, he just kept pushing until the velcro could no longer hold! I think his nickname might just become "BamBam". LOL

8. seagoddess28 (511) | 3 years ago | YAAAYYY! (Granny Siggi is doing a dance of joy for BamBam and Mommy!) This just brightened my day, MSV1313! After all the c<>p I have been going through since the weekend, your welcome news certainly brings the sunshine in...He really sounds like a happy boy, and pretty soon he will be tearing all over the place, with you happily in pursuit. Give him lots and lots of hugs and kisses from me (save some for you too). Isn't science grand? Whoever invented the Pavlik Harness should get an award! Your boy sure sounds like he's on his way to an athletic scholarship...lotsa love to you too!!!

MSV1313 (2243) | 3 years ago | Yes, God Bless the makers of the Pavlik Harness! Whoever thought I'd be saying that? When he was first ordered to go into it I cried. Now I am so grateful that he had such a device. I met a family of a boy only a few years older who had to have surgery and live in a body cast for a very long time because when he was a baby they did not have the Pavlik Harness available yet. I'm glad my good news brightened your day too.

I am really glad to hear the news about your boy....
And as you say the minor inconviences will be worth it for him having the chance at a normal childhood.
kids will pick up on your feelings and stress, so you have to know that you are feeling less anxious about his device, probably so is he.

MSV1313 (2243) | 3 years ago | Thank you. I am so happy he is going to be OK! Even though it all amounted to a minor inconvenience looking at the big picture, I was actully pretty upset when I first got the news that my baby had to be in it. He had already been through so much. But as the weeks went by and he and I adapted to it, it wasn't so bad, and now that I know it actually did what it was supposed to do, I would absolutely do it again if I had to. Apparently wearing this thing has enabled him to avoid much more invasive procedures in his future. He is much happier now, I think you're right, he sees me happy and it is contagious. My little girl is happier too!
