I have an older murray riding mower, it does not start. I used jumper cables from my truck and it starts, so I assume an alternator is involved is this true??? The battery has 12volts as per multimeter but it drops down to 6 volts while trying to start. Do these mowers have alternators or are they called something else.

When the voltage drops that much during start it is typically a sign of a bad battery. Take it to a service center and they can test it for you. The bad battery could have been caused by a bad alternator (which which your tractor should have). After you jump it and get it running have you put a gauge on the battery to see if it is getting a charge? Either way, make sure you clean up the terminals and consider replacing the battery cables if they are old. Good luck.
