I'm So Proud of my Kids |
|
Yesterday, we got hit. Freezing rain all day, ice. Lots of tree damage (weighted down with ice and breakage). We lost our electricity for 6 hours. Mind you that isn't too bad, but beings how the youngest two are autisitc and them not understanding why the lights wont turn on was a challenge.
We spend our day cleaning their rooms, lots of games of candyland and playing with piggieback rides.
About 3:00pm my daughter finally started to crying and said she was cold, our house got down to 62 degrees, so called around found my sister and her family had electricity and we had my brother-in-law come get us and take us to his house (I couldn't get into my car because the doors were iced shut.)
Today, church is cancelled because we're getting snow, it's coming down pretty good now. Wonder what tommorrow will bring for school.
Truelly a different experience for them, they handled it really well. I'm just so proud of them.

1. mithrarao (1366) | 3 years ago | Hello ljegbers,I know how tough life must be for you all,now that it is freezing cold...I hope I will be able to transmit some warmth from my little place here....In the place I live,Kerala, it is still warm about 30 degree celsius.....We never have winter or snow here since we are situated near the equator, and have a moderate climate here.. I hope you and your kids will be able to deal with the weather well.I cannot stand cold climates myself, even the very sight of snow in the pictures give me the shivers.....I really wish all of you wellness and good health.....happy mylotting friend.....

ljegbers (5761) | 3 years ago | If I had my camera, I'd be posting pictures with this discussion. Someplaces the ice is over 1/2 inch thick.
I think the kids did very well and I was pleased and surprised. My sister and her husband are on another power line and so I'll know to call them next time our power goes out.
Definately a long day yesterday. I think I'm tired just from their emotional highs and lows.

2. Thoroughrob (7923) | 3 years ago | I am glad they did well for you. A change of events can be so hard on them. It sounds like they handled it really good. We had an ice storm last year that was really bad. We had over an inch of ice. We had people that did not get electric back for over 3 days. Thank goodness ours was just 15 hours. It was quite an experience. Good luck with the snow.

ljegbers (5761) | 3 years ago | O my, that would just be over the top. I've talked to my husband now about a generator, if not anything back up batteries for their TV. They are both afraid of the dark so when it starts getting dusk so early, they were headed into melt down, I just knew we had to go somewhere.
I figure if it happens again, at least have a back up batter for the TV/DVD so they can cuddle up and watch a movie together, sometimes just keeping them still like that encourages them to sleep.

ljegbers (5761) | 3 years ago | They're really good about somethings. Our really solid routines have to happen at night for bedtime prep. I'm so thankful it happened yesterday and not today, otherwise I know neither of them would want to go to school tomorrow.
It's cleared off now so I know there will be school. We were supposed to go to my father-in-laws birthday party today, but the youngest just cried whenever I tried to dress her, so it's just her and me here now. She keeps going from one room to another turning on and off all the lights. I think she just needs a day with everything back to normal.

ljegbers (5761) | 3 years ago | Yeah, it was grating on me being away.;-) There were some emotional highs and lows, I was exhausted by 8:00pm. Power was back up and brought the kids home in stages. First me and bubby and then little girl and daddy came about an hour after that.
I got him to bed right away and then could work on her getting everything back to "normal" in her eyes. She was out then around midnight, truely a tired little girl today.
