Most popular brand DSLR is Nikon and Canon... | | In a previous thread I mentioned that there are two main schools for the picture format. 4:3 vs 3:2 format for photos. In the 4:3 school, the Olympus seems to be the popular brand for DSLR. Are there any other brand besides this one using the 4:3 format?
And in the 3:2 school, there are many brands in the market. From Sony Alphas, to the higher end models like Leica. There are the mid range priced brands that have their fair share of followers, two main schools of DSLR followers. The ones that swear by the Nikons and the ones that swear by the Canons.
Given these two brands, Nikon vs Canons, which one will you choose? What is your deciding factor given that budget is not the issue?

I guess sometimes when i develop photos my photo shop uncle says that if I want 4R then some ends will be lopped off. I've always just said okay no prob. can't remember the details why.
personally, i prefer Canon to nikon but that is just a gut feel thing no basis at all.:) also that I've owned canon cameras most of my life.

ahgong (3853) | 2 years ago | Hi squaretile, I am also a canon camera owner most of my life! I even encourage my father-in-law to love the canon too. In fact, my wife bought him one and he fell in love with it! But those camera are all point and shoot.
When I tried my hands on the canon DSLR, that is a totally different story. Pictures that are taken on the Canon DSLR, when I open them for editing, the picture resolution is only 72 pixels per inch. Comparing to the other DSLRs I have tried, the resolution is poor in my opinion. Makes it difficult to edit the fine details when the picture has a lot of pattern, like that of lace.
So considering the need to edit a lot of pictures, I opted for the Nikon instead.

| | 2. youless (15342) | 2 years ago | I found that every brand of camera will have its own fans:) But it's true that Nikon and Canon are the most popular brand. I've heard a professional photographer said that usually the photos who won were used either Nikon or Canon. In my opinion, I think most cameras work fine and they have their own advantages. It depends on your skill and this should be the most important part. If I show you some good photos, actually most people can't tell which cameras they use. We judge the photos by themselves.

I do agree with you that the brand of the camera is only part of the equation of getting quality shots. The skill of the photographer is also as important.
I guess Nikon and Canon are popular mostly because of the ranges of lenses the provide. Until I can get the chance to really use the two brands side by side taking the same pictures, I can never really tell for sure which is the better one.
Based on the reviews I read online, these two brands are the most popular based on the range of lenses, bodies, ease of upgrading, possibility of sharing their lenses between the upgrades and pricing of their components that makes them popular.
Other than that, I really cannot think of any other reason why some other brand cameras cannot get the same quality shots as the Nikon and the Canon.
In fact, some of the best photos I have seen so far are from lesser known brands like Konica and Fuji.
