Black Magic/Magick |
|
Okay this is just driving me absolutel bonkers...Now I'm sure that some ppl if not many, will have a different point of view which of course is natural but here is my rant...
Why is it that ppl assume magic/magick has a colour..I really dont understand that at all..Ppl like to toss around the term "Black Magic" and with it imply it is some nasty evil naughty naughty thing when IMO the truth of the matter is magic/magick has NO COLOUR...To me saying "black magic/magick, white magic/magick" is like saying "black prayers and white prayers"...Just like Prayer has no colour, Magick doesnt either.
What do you all think? Why the need for such negative terms..Its the same with words like Vodou for example or Satanism or Witchcraft and so on...Why do ppl who are UNEDUCATED about the topic(s) so intent on labeling them with negative terms?
any thoughts?

1. lecanis (7212) | 3 years ago | Actually one of my favorite rants about this has to do with the so-called "voodoo doll" so I'm sure you'll appreciate it. When I learned about it from someone who'd been practicing Vodou their whole lives, I was told that it was used for both healing and for harm. Somehow, though it's now labeled as "black magic" and seen as only a harmful tool.
Similarly, Ouiji boards get a really bad reputation, and they're actually a totally valid tool in the hands of a practiced user. The problem is that misuse by generations of unpracticed people and children has caused people to think of Ouiji itself as bad or evil.
I could go on and on actually. My great-grandmother had wards on her home that caused actual physical pain to people who came there meaning harm to herself or her loved ones. Is this black magic? They managed to physically repel a man who was sexually and physically abusive of me, and thus saved me from further abuse at least as long as I managed to stay in her home. So of course to me this magic was something that saved me, and protected me... but because it harmed those it repelled, many people would call it "evil".
Magic does not have colors, or good and evil. Human beings can have intent of various amounts of moral shadings, but the magic itself is pure. If I cast a spell to harm someone who is hurting someone else, my intent is to protect the victim, and thus I am trying to do good. I could cast the exact same spell to harm someone who is in my way at work, or who simply annoyed me, and that would be wrong for me, based on my moral code and ethics. But it would be the exact same magic.

|
|
lecanis (7212) | 3 years ago | It's ultimately probably the most powerful (and perhaps hard to use) skills used in the anime, it seems. Essentially IF you can get someone trapped in a genjustsu, you've defeated them. However, you have to be able to trap them first, and there are those who know how to dispel them, or can do harm to themselves to get out of the genjustsu. So not everyone can be defeated that way, but if you manage to catch someone in it, you've pretty much got them.

When it's in the media it's always 'black magic'...movies use the term...books...no matter where it is it's called black so we follow suit. It's all we know and unless you're well informed on the subject you don't know any better.

3. susaneverson (4945) | 3 years ago | Most people are terrified of what they don't know. As a general rule people only know what myth and media has had to say about Magic and that has been a very negative conentations to "Black Magic".
I have to disagree with you, I think that prayer, magic, vodou, christiananity, Hinduism,,,,,,all have colours. Most thoughts have an intent and entent has colour, not colour we can see, per say, but we can feel it. I don't always explain things in a eloquent manner but your instincts tell you if a "dark/evil" man has horrid intentions toward you and you will feel it if you don't ignore it. One the other side of that same coin, if you meet someone who is a truly good person you feel a 'lightness/kindness' from them. I may be way off on this but it may not be so much what we see, alone as a mixture of all our senses and colour is part of our senses. Susan

5. zukepr (11799) | 3 years ago | LOL I am sorry but my answer is going to be a little tricky here. Generally I agree with you that magick has no color Its neither black nor white However I have in the past used the term "black Magick" I use it to clarify that it is merely a form of magick that I disagree with which is to say that it is magick done with the intentions of doing harm IMO anything done with the intent to do harm is negative and therefore "black" I do NOT associate "black magick" with any particular set of beleifs It has nothing to do with Satanism or Voodou or even witchcraft

lecanis (7212) | 3 years ago | So if it's intended to do harm to one person to protect another, does that bother you, Zu? Just asking out of curiosity.:)
| |
|
|
zukepr (11799) | 3 years ago | Its cool that you asked about that. There is a huge grey area there Now I prefer to deflect harm without intentionally causing harm however I understand in some situations like if your children are threatened you may be more inclined to do harm to others in order to protect them. Now even though the intentions of doing harm is there it is done to protect your child I dont see things in black or white I see things more in shades of grey LOL You know what they say though, the road to hell is paved with good intentions I myself have been guilty of using "black magick" as per my own definition of the term When loved ones are threatened there are no boundaries or limits
| |
|
|
lecanis (7212) | 3 years ago | *nods* That's pretty much what I expected you to say, from my experiences with talking to you, but I was curious as to how you would put it.:)
Since I tend to go with Celtic ethics and honor codes, I guess I'm a little more prone to causing harm than some people would like. If I have the option of killing someone who is trying to harm my child to stop them, or stopping them without killing them, I'll choose the death blow every time.
| |
|
|
zukepr (11799) | 3 years ago | Still in the grey zone LOL I guess for me it would depend on the level of threat to my kids Something not so serious that could be deflected I would rather handle accordingly BUT if a serious threat was there and I felt like my child was in immediate danger you bet your A$$ I would kill in a heartbeat and not think twice about it.
| |
|
|
lecanis (7212) | 3 years ago | Haha exactly!:P
For me, I take into the consideration the thought that if a person is attacking people I care about, even if I stop them, they could always try again, or harm someone else. So I prefer to take care of threats completely the first time if I can.
This isn't totally theoretical for me, as I have caused serious harm with magic before. So I guess that's why I'm so into this discussion.

zukepr (11799) | 3 years ago | I have done serious damamge as well My first husband was in a near fatal freak car accident after he went after my infant daughter with a hunting knife while he was sleep walking Of course that was after i hit him with a baseball bat and got my daughter out of the house

Ravenladyj (17934) | 3 years ago | "I dont see things in black or white I see things more in shades of grey"
LOL whereas I see things in a rainbow of colour...
"magick done with the intentions of doing harm IMO anything done with the intent to do harm is negative and therefore "black""
See now for me when there is valid reason doing harm or invading ones free will etc etc can be very much a positive thing if its protected the ppl you love....Then of course you have ppl who like to meddle just for the sake of meddling but even thats not black to me..thats just colour it stupid IMO LOL..When it comes to my children and my home I have NO PROBLEM doing what needs to be done in order to back ppl off ya know EXCEPT when it comes to kids...I dont and won't meddle with anyones kids but that doesnt mean I cant put the pinch on the parents ya know..

6. emma44 (965) | 3 years ago | witch craft do exist everywhere even in the most developed places of the world just that in africa and its being used to cause lots of evil things just like many other places in the world,it involves some herbalist communing with the spirit world
| |
| |
|
|
zukepr (11799) | 3 years ago | ummmmmmm communicating with the spirit word is evil? Sorry but I disagree
| |
|
|
| cyberpunk (50) | 3 years ago | i disagree too.
i don't practise magick, but for me, communing with spirits does not automatically make one evil.
come to think of it, are there really "evil spirits"? i think they are just different from us.

7. barehugs (3878) | 3 years ago | In one of my Past Lives I lived as a witch in Olde England. At that time there was 2 kinds of magic. And 2 kinds of witches. The wicked witches practised Black magic. This was often done with a doll made to the likeness of the person to be bewitched. The witch made a chant and stuck pins in the doll. Often the bewitched person died in agony shortly after. The Good Witch Practised White magic and was a healer with a good knowledge of Herbal Medicine. In those Dark Ages the Roman Church was in Great Fear of the magic influence the witches had with the people. The Church consequently Murdered millions of witches by burning them at the stake!

9. 4monsters4me (2011) | 3 years ago | I was reading one of your responses the other day where you mentioned this and today I was watching a rerun of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and one of the characters (Willow) started talking about how she was into the black arts and magic and I thought of you, lol.
But I think that is how people think of it, from TV and movies and how they portray it. In the show they do both good and "black" magic. The good stuff is usually for protection or has no horrible consequences whereas "black" magic is usually used to hurt other people. Obviously the show is based on fictional magic but this is what people really think magic is.
You mentioned "black prayers" and I would think of that as any kind of bad thoughts towards people.

10. magikrose (4950) | 3 years ago | In my own opnion magick has NO color what so ever. As long as your intentions are for the greater good then all is fine. If that means harming 1 person to save another then so be it.
People who dont want to learn the true meaning or are afraid to are the ones who label it out of fear of the unknown. I have always believed that fear is our own worst enemy.
