Happy Holidays; The Unessary "PC" Scare email this discussion to a friend?

In most of America, PC (politically correct) has become a popular catch phrase of those wishing to show their displeasure towards certain concepts. In my opinion, this fascination with labeling things as politically correct has escalated into levels of absurdity. My beef, however, is not with the overused label of PC, but rather with the popular belief by many that "Happy Holidays" is too politically correct, and is somehow part of this imaginary "War on Christmas".

To begin, there is no "War on Christmas", and "Happy Holidays" is not a phrase meant to be politically correct. It's usage dates back to way before the alleged "War on Christmas" began. One of my favorite songs happens to be "Happy Holiday" composed in 1942 by Irving Berlin, and first sung by Bing Crosby in a movie called "Holiday Inn". It's been used in many songs since then, but it's usage as a greeting has become common only in the last decade or two.

The word "Holiday" itself is a middle english derivative meaning "Holy day". When people tell you "Happy Holidays", they are, in effect, saying "Happy Holy Days". This phrase is a greeting meant to include all Holy Days, not just Christmas.

Finally, we come to the reason for it's use. Christianity is not the only religion in this country. While it is still the most practiced, there are still other religions in this country which have their Holy Days in the month of December as well. "Happy Holidays" has become a greeting for those wishing to be considerate in wishing those they do not know personally a happy holiday season. This way, whether you're a Christian, Jew, Muslim, or pagan, you're still getting an accurate holiday greeting.

So next time someone wishes you a Happy Holiday, remember, they're not trying to be PC, they're trying to be considerate (so stop whining about the phrase being PC). Besides - it's the thought that counts.

Let me start by saying that I do not have a problem with 'happy holidays.' It is an easy way to make sure to include any and all holidays a person celebrates when you don't know which ones they celebrate, and without having to go through the whole list.

I think the problem that a lot of people have is not that there is anything wrong with the phrase itself, but that people are saying that it is the Only acceptable holiday greeting. If I want to say 'merry christmas' to a person who I know celebrates christmas, why shouldn't I? Because another person who happens to be present may not celebrate christmas and may be offended by hearing it said? That's ridiculous!

If people want to say 'happy holidays' they should, there is nothing wrong with that. But they should also be able to say 'merry christmas' or 'happy hannukah' without someone complaining that they were offended.

Telling someone "Happy Holidays" during this time of year as an excellent and acceptable way to wish someone the best during this season. I get so fed up with the effort people go through to be "politically correct." What does it matter in the long run? I'm familiar with the meaning behind the work "holidays" as it does have true depth and meaning.

However, the phrase "Happy Holidays" should not replace the phrase "Merry Christmas," a phrase that has been used quite frequently in public until a few years ago. People shouldn't be afraid of wishing someone a "Merry Christmas" simply for fear of offending them. We should try not to offend people, but wishing someone a "Merry Christmas" when they don't celebrate that particular holiday never offended people is the past, so why is it such a big deal now?

To prove my point, I'm a member of a particular social networking site where I have friends from all over the world. Without even thinking about it first, I posted "Happy Thanksgiving" comments on all of my friends' profiles. I received comments back from many of them thanking me for the wishes but that they didn't celebrate Thanksgiving in their culture. They were glad to receive the comment and were nothing but kind regarding the fact that they didn't observe that particular holiday. Part of the reason I became a member of the site was to learn about other countries and cultures, and that particular situation has definitely helped. To my knowledge, none of my online friends were offended by my comments.

In closing, I would like to say Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours!

I totally agree and I wish people would realize that. Some people are so easily offended. I mean I don't blame them if they were offended about something that was clearly talking down to them or something but something like that? No, no! You'd have to be nutty to be offended by Happy Holidays. I really don't even have any Holy Days but I wouldn't be offended if someone said it to me. Regardless of whether you celebrate or not, or what you celebrate, you shouldn't take offense to that. I could say more but I think I've driven my point into the ground. Nice topic btw!

The trouble is that when some people say Happy Holidays they are not really saying a form of Happy Holy Days, they are trying to disparage us from saying Merry Christmas, that is taking the sacredness of the season. It is not the case of being considerate. They are thinkng secularism and I doubt that any of them know the origin of Holiday is, but if you keep telling them that, maybe they will stop saying Happy Holidays when you remind them of its sacred significance.
Maybe then they will say Happy December 25th or Happy Last Two weeks of the Year or Happy Spend Your Money on Gifts Season.
