Has anyone else here had written material stolen? |
| |
| I recently found a book that I wrote for sale through http://hiddenmysteries.com/xcart/home.php These people had downloaded my material from an old site I had and were selling my book through a "print on demand" company for $22.95 a piece. I ordered a copy (under a different name) and received a copy, cover and all' after a few weeks. The material was identical to what I had on the net. I called these people, got their 'president' and asked who he thought he was that could sell other people's material over internet. He proceeded to tell me he didn't know what the copy right laws were in Norway. The person took the book off the internet immediately when he was discovered and is no longer selling it but how many other people here have had things ripped off? Since it is so easy to steal material from the net do you think there should be enacted laws severely punishing such crooks? Let me know how you feel about the incident. | | | | | |

| | That's absolutely dreadful. It's stealing! Isn't there some way you can prosecute or at least have them take your work off of their website? | | | | | | |

| | The laws here are made to protect the crooks. Since they ceased selling the book as soon as I told them to there is very little I can do. | | | |

| | Unbelievable. I'm so sorry to hear they're going to get away with this. Their entire site should be shut down. It makes me quite angry. | | | |

| | I'm curious about how Norway comes into this, since you are located in the United States (according to your member information), and the phone numbers provided seem to indicate that they are also in the United States. If that is indeed the case, you should be able to pursue monetary damages against them. Who knows how many other people were able to purchase copies of your work through them? This is exactly why I'm so hesitant to post things I consider 'important' online--you never know who's going to come along and swipe them, then try to turn a profit from your own work. | | | | | | |

| | I uploaded the book to internet while I lived in Norway. I wrote a registered letter demanding to be reimbursed for any copies they sold but as yet have not heard from them. It could still go to court but I desired to let you all know about it because we have to be careful, had the names been changed I may never have found it. Had the names been changed or anything else been changed I would have a very strong case in court. | | | |

| | I'm not a lawyer or any sort of legal expert, but I don't think that it matters where you were when you uploaded the book. You have an automatic copyright on your work and if the company is located in the USA then I think that it should be possible for you to sue them. | | | |

| | I have to agree with jwfarrimond, but for a slightly different reason: usually in the US, the location in which a crime was committed is what matters when determining which court should oversee the trial. I think it'd definitely be worth consulting a lawyer about the situation, especially since you may be able to pursue this. | | | |
