They Always Ask Where All of My Furniture Is.... |
|
My husband and I move a lot, he only recently got out of the Army (Mar.), and we have moved 3 times since then. I can't even tell you how many times we moved b/f that. We learned early on to keep our things to a minimum. We can't seem to scale down our books, but we have just enough shelving for those that we have, and just enough furniture for what we need. So, in our bed room, we have - a bed. Just a big king-sized bed. I give people a tour of our house and they ask when our furniture is to arrive. They go into the bedroom and ask where my bureau is. When I say that we don't have one, they ask if we need one. When I say no, they ask where we keep the clothes. I say in the closet. Well, what about the underwear and socks? On a shelf, in the closet. The only thing I felt that our bedroom needed was 2 nightstands, we just hadn't found any that we liked. Well, last night we found 2 nightstands, very small and simple, and a matching bookshelf for our textbooks. Still don't intend to get a bureau, or dresser, or chest of drawer.
So, are you a minimalist, just enough furniture to hold your stuff, and as little stuff as you can bear to have, or are you a collector of stuff, with lots of furniture, big cabinets for dishes, things like that? Do people ever ask you where all of you furniture is, or do they ask you if you need help hauling stuff away (my mother gets that one a lot)? What's your preference?

2. cruelkitti (168) | 2 years ago | Well, I move a lot as well (or I have in the past) and I find that I always get rid of bigger furniture with each move. I try to be a minimalist, I don't like things like end tables, coffee tables, cabinets, etc. BUT...I have a very...hmmm....sentimental side and I tend to keep things that others probably think are strange...and because of that, I am prone to clutter. I have been working on it and I'm getting better about not keeping things that I really don't need, but I'm not quite there yet. I don't even have a bed...I HAD one, but I preferred the idea of having that extra space at the time, and junked it... a perfectly good bed in great condition. I sleep on the couch, and the floor. My preference is minimalism, but I tend to be just the opposite.=P

SomethingGood332 (1344) | 2 years ago | I have a friend with all wicker furniture (a couch, table, and chest of drawers) and sleeps in a hammock so that when she moves she can pack all of her own furniture in her car and take off.

3. twoey68 (9631) | 2 years ago | We've got kind of a simular problem. First off, I get complaints b/c ppl say there isn't enough seating in the Living Room. There are 2 chairs, one for Hubby-one for me, and a love seat for my Nephew to sleep on when he comes over.
We also don't have a kitchen table and chairs. We haven't needed one. We generally eat in the Living Room or at our desks in the office. I have decided that I want to get one but haven't found one that I like yet.
I'm more of a minimalist...mostly getting only the things I need. Rather than alot of extra furniture.

SomethingGood332 (1344) | 2 years ago | I always tell people they are welcome to buy a sofa, find a place to put it in my house, move it for us every time we move, find a place at new houses for it, and come over to move it every time I feel like rearranging furniture. We have enough seating for us, plus a futon, and all the floorspace you could want (since we don't have furniture cluttering up the floor). We even give up our chairs to guests. So far, no takers on the sofa endeavor (though my grandmother did offer to buy it, just not move it; I told her no deal).

SomethingGood332 (1344) | 2 years ago | Maybe if I didn't move so much, I would have more, but I just can't bear the thoughts of moving a bunch of stuff. This last move (Dec.), 2/3 of our boxes were books. I tried to pick out the ones we don't read, or have only read once to get rid of some, but there were only 2 - both textbooks from b/f I switched my major.

nichole1983 (809) | 2 years ago | oh wow... 10 months to go on that one... i dont blame you for not wanting to unpack.. dang i would just unpack the basics and leave the rest in boxes haha... put it in the basement or attic if you have them or a storage or extra bedroom... i totally see your point.. you take care and i guess happy moving or is that a good thing to say...

5. yanxchick (219) | 2 years ago | I'm so jealous. I have moved about four times in the last three years and everytime there is more stuff. The first time around wasn't so bad because I didn't have much, but then I moved in with my boyfriend and now we have a house full of stuff.
I would love not to have tons of stuff. My first apt., was so bare but I didn't care because it was just me, my couch and my bed.
Your friends may ask where your furniture is, but they're the ones with bad backs they day after moving.

6. foxyfire33 (5796) | 2 years ago | I know I'm too much of a clutterer to have lots of furniture. Table tops, shelves and stands are just more places to keep things I don't need. I'm not exactly a minimalist but I do try to be careful about what I have. If it has a function then it's alright, like a kitchen table or Computer Desk, but if it's just a decorative stand then I avoid it.

SomethingGood332 (1344) | 2 years ago | Yeah, I understand that. We have 4 bookshelves in our living room, 1 in the bedroom for textbooks, and 1 in the baby's room. Lot of shelves, but we have a lot of books, ones that we reread over and over.

| 7. MarkDG (37) | 2 years ago | Well, I can definitely understand that kind of lifestyle. Both of my parents were in the Navy, and we were constantly moving! Furniture was kept at an absolute minimum. Now they are both retired, so moving has been somewhat minimized. However, we recently made a decision to make a short move into a neighboring city, since my family inherited a large portion of land there. Because of concerns about making the house look cluttered to buyers, we moved much of our furniture to a storage unit. Now, in a family of seven, we only have seating for three in our family room!
All in all though, I really think I do prefer having a somewhat minimalistic mindset towards household furnishings. There seems to be more space to move around, and it feels like a more open environment.

8. SuzyPuppyChese (567) | 2 years ago | I think you're smart to be minimalist in that regard. I'm always glad when I find a new friend, though, and discover they can't scale down their books! When I moved in with my folks, I gave away a lot of my books and I thought my heart would break. It didn't, though. I kept all the poetry and the special things such as my Jane Austens and Edgar Allan Poes and such. Those were able to fit in my combo coffeetable/bookshelf piece I have here in the puter room. There is also a box of books in storage, but I didn't really keep a lot.
I don't like to keep a lot of shelves and cabinets because the more shelves I have the more I am tempted to fill them with a lot of superfluous stuff. Where I live now I have my Computer Desk, where I have my art glass and family pictures and Beatles figurines.
When I leave this house, I doubt I'll collect a lot of furniture again. I got rid of most because it was old and getting shabby. As long as visitors have a place to sit and it's comfy that will be enough for me. I have one big bookcase in storage and it should do fine for refilling.

SomethingGood332 (1344) | 2 years ago | Both my husband and I read very quickly, so we can read more than 1 book a day, and the library is a bit of a drive from here. Also, we are both pre-law, so we have to keep our textbooks for reference materials and for later classes (we try to use the same book when we can, but we are 2 dif. types of law - he is copyright law, I am finance law; some of the basic classes share a book, esp. nice since our scholarships pay a book allowance whether you buy the book or not).

9. mummybec (257) | 2 years ago | I wouldnt say we have HEAPS of furniture etc... but we dont just have a few things either, so I guess we are somewhere in between. I never get anyone asking us any questions about our furniture etc... I guess if we did it would be when are you getting a new one?? As most of our furniture was second hand when we moved in together and we have not seen the need to upgrade yet.

10. moneyandgc (3083) | 2 years ago | We are military too and have very little furniture. In our bedroom we have one small dresser, our bed and my husband's 42 inch TV that he had when we married. We lost all of our furniture and pretty much everything else in Hurricane Katrina. The TV happened to be at my parents at the time which is why it survived. But, even before the hurricane we had very little. We are hardly ever home because of his work, so I have minimal decoration on the walls as well. We will move again soon, so I don't really plan on decorating any more than I have.

SomethingGood332 (1344) | 2 years ago | I am sorry to hear that you lost so much during Katrina. I actually worked construction recovery in the New Orleans and Gulfport area (try to recover salvageable buildings, mark for demolition those that couldn't be save, tear them down to a shell so that we could build it up again) and I heard so many stories and saw so many things that will always haunt me (lets just say, the coroner's crews hadn't always done their jobs b/f we were sent in to do ours).

moneyandgc (3083) | 2 years ago | Thanks.:) We actually lived in Ocean Springs/St. Martin. My parents old neighborhood had houses just completely disappear. There are just a bunch of empty slabs. I felt thankful even though I lost everything, I could at least go back and LOOK at my destroyed stuff. Kind of like closure. I can't imagine going back to see nothing but cement. Parts of Gulfport were really bad. There were people that went back to inspect their properties and found "the people that didn't leave." I couldn't imagine that either. I still tear up when I think about seeing "We are safe" spray painted on the sides on people's homes. One of them were my parents old neighbors. They stayed in their house, the whole bottom level washed away. They thought they were going to die. We couldn't get ahold of them afterward and all their cars were parked in the driveway. When I saw "We are safe" spray painted on that wrecked house, I lost it. They have a son the same age as my own and they have been playmates since they were 4 years old (they are 10 now).
Thank you for helping. It means more to us than you know.
