Petting Zoos |
| |
| Okay, I am the only member of this interest, the only picture is one I uploaded, and this is the first discussion, so here goes: Over Christmas, my grandmother paid for the whole family to go to a local petting zoo. I am not usually a fan of petting zoos, or really zoos in general (except research and education zoos - different discussion). Anyways, this particular petting zoo takes injured and abused animals and rehabilitates them, then educates children on them. They charge a small fee to enter the facility, but if you say you can't pay, or can only pay part, they will still let you in. They also do a Christmas lights display each year to get people to come. While at the zoo, one of the camels gave my son a big slobbery kiss right on his belly. Picture below. What are your feelings on petting zoos? Have you ever been to one? | | Camel Kisses | | | | |

| | I've been to them and I like them better than real zoos. They are really good for teaching younger children about a variety of animals and I like that you can interact with them. | | | | | | |

| | I agree about the educational, but I don't like the idea of animals in cages. I do like when a petting zoo rehabilitates animals, or when a regular zoo is a research facility that just happens to let people also see the animals - that way, kids are more likely to learn something and help preserve our wildlife and environment. | | | |

| | I just have to add that the picture of the camel kisses is too adorable. I took my daughter to a regular zoo when she was younger and I had her up on my shoulders. I have a picture of a giraffe trying to eat the top of her head. | | | |

| | Yeah, that was a pretty fun trip, Sis, and so nice of Grandmother to pay for all of us. At least the camel didn't sneeze on the baby like it did for Uncle J.! Even though we have the same upbringing, I find it remarkable that as adults we still have similar views, to be so different in many ways. I also dislike petting zoos; petting zoos are not funded with government money or regulated by a government entity in any way, so the people can really treat the animals however they want with little or no repercussions. So frequently, you see malnourished or mistreated animals in a petting zooa. Do you really want your child petting and interacting with these mangy-looking, mistreated creatures, learning that this is how animals look? I would rather have pets, well-treated pets, with which my sons can interact than to have them seeing these pitiful creatures. Why can't more be done to insure that privately owned 'petting zoos' are treating their animals properly? Why are they allowed to do this to animals? Why are they allowed to have children visiting these horrible facilities? They are basically just farm animals in too-tiny cages, charging people to touch and feed these animals. I just think it's ridiculous. | | | | | | |

| | Sounds like you've got some bad ones in your area. Most of the ones I've been to the animals had rather large enclosures & would come into the petting area when they wanted to. It's the traveling ones that would be more questionable but then they didn't tend to have wilder or larger animals. I don't know who regulates them but someone should. | | | |

| | Awwww, that is so adorable. Like Vera, I am concerned about the different germs in places like that, but the farm where I grew up had a lot of different animals and as we were in charge of their hygiene so we knew they were pretty clean as far as other species go, and we hugged them and petted them a lot. Someday I'll find and post a picture taken of me as a 2-year old with two baby goats. That is, if nobody laughs at my knobby knees. My heart goes out to any human kid who hasn't had the experience of bonding with baby animals of different kinds. | | | | | | |
