Drumsticks???? |
| |
| Hi every body. Do you eat 'drum-sticks'? My friends in the west might not be aquainted with this fruit, that looks like drum-sticks; hence the name. Here in India most homes have this tree. My house has also one, it is full of the fruit now. This fruit is used as vegetable. The leaves and flowers are also eaten as vegetable. I like this very much. In my local language, it is known as 'munga'. The extract from the leaves is said to cure high blood pressure . It also cures heavy bleeding during periods. The fruit is supposed to increse the sexual power too. Well friends, do you eat this in your place. Please share. DR.B.SARAF Ph.D. | | drumstick | | | | |

| | No wonder we have medical problems here in North America, most of the food that is good for you grows in places like India and South America. I never heard of 'drum-sticks' It does sound good, and I do not know if it is imported over here. If any, it might be made into powder and sold in the health food stores. I will have to check our supermarket - we have one that sells food from over the world, and we do have an East Indian section - to see if they have it over here. That part about high blood pressure sounds interesting. That part about increasing libedo my husband could have used it when we were trying to get a baby and me and him did not have the same schedule. When I wanted, he did not. | | | | | | |

| | Here the food we call "drum-sticks" is the leg of a cooked chicken! I had to ask Mr. Google about this one and he says it is the "Moringa Pterygosperma" but upon looking that one up I learned it is none other than the one we call Horseradish Tree. Although it is much different from the garden plant we call horseradish, its roots have a similar flavor and can be used as a substitute, apparently, for our American horseradish. I love horseradish! Discussions about plants are always of great interest to me. We have a tree right outside our window which we have not identified yet, but although different it has some characteristics in common with your drumstick tree. The leaves are less dense but of a similar shape and it has pods that are not quite so curly, but still have a bit of the shape. The trunk and branches look similar, but it does not bear the lovely flowers pictured in connection with your tree. Now, however, I am most interested in finding out what kind of tree we have. | | | | | | |

| | that is interesting. I wonder if it tastes like our horseradish. I am quite fond of horseradish myself and hope to make some this year. I picked up some pickled hungarian horseradish that is fantastic! I'd like to find a similar recipe for it. | | | |

| | We'll have to see if Dr. B has pulled up any saplings by the root and tasted it. We don't want him to eat something harmful, though, in case it turns out to be a different kind of tree. | | | |

| | Hi papa doc. I think this is the one we have in the Philippines too. Your photo is too small but I can recognize the fruit. I think this is what we call "malunggay" in the Philippines. It is rich in iron. My mom used to feed me this because I was anemic as a child. I miss vegetables like this that we don't have here in Australia. I cook this vegetables with mussels in sauted onion, garlic and ginger. The juice from this vegetable when you start boiling it tastes yummy as it blends with the juice of the mussels and the ginger flavor. oh yum! | | | | | | |

| | Hello my dear friend. I am very interested in this fruit for its so many good functions to human body. But we do not have this kind of tree, let alone its fruit. Is it shaped like a drumstick that it is called 'drumstick'? This name of the fruit sounds very interesting to me. Thanks. | | | | | | |

| | hi yes i have heard about it.Back in India i had an over grown tree just behind my house. There was a lady who often cooked drumsticks in curry for us.And how i abhored it.It was very bitter and spoiled the taste of lovely curry.I never touched it. But it all changed one day when i had been to visit my friend. Her mother had made drumsticks in dal.The very word shocked me.Immense persuassion and my famished state took the better of me.I had the dal and since that day i have drumsticks whenever possible. I domt cook it in dal instead in tomato with peas carrots. It is a very good remedy for painful back. Its great food for growing kids too!!! Ta and Happt Eating.. | | | | | | |

| | Hi thanks for the response. Munga in 'dal' tastes great. The bitter taste was due to the outer green skin, that need to be scraped. You can try with mustard too. | | | |

| | Hey, to be honest the fruit did not look like a drum-sticks at all. But I read one of your poster response, she said that this veggie available in Philippines, I am sure it must be here also in my country as I am very close to Philippines. May be the term used here for this veggie is different. I can't see your picture clearly - too small. | | | | | | |

| | Hello see this. The taste is 'unique'. here are more deatails. The leaves are highly nutritious, being a significant source of beta-carotene, Vitamin C, protein, iron and potassium. The leaves are cooked and used like spinach. In addition to being used fresh as a substitute for spinach, its leaves are commonly dried and crushed into a powder, and used in soups and sauces. Murungakai Tamil as it is locally known in Tamil Nadu is used in Siddha medicine. Its leaves are full of medicinal properties. The tree is a good source for calcium and phosphorus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moringa_oleifera | | | |
