How long to wait? |
| |
| My husband brought home this dog yesterday, we believe to be a white shepherd. Before claiming her as ours, I wondered what is a reasonable amount of time to wait for someone who may be looking for their dog. We will be posting notices, and asking around. I would hate to be taking someone family pet, though she seemed to be not getting enough food, she is very skinny. She also seemed to be an outdoor dog, the cold doesn't bother her and she can't seem to hold herself, like she is use to go wherever she is.. So, is there a time limit, before saying we now have a dog? | | The dog | | | | |

| | I would say if you are putting up signs and such and letting people know you have the dog waiting maybe a week before 'claiming' her should be enough time. There is always the chance that someone will show up after that time but truthfully from what you said in this discussion and your other one I don't think anyone is going to claim her. If she was being cared for at home and had freedom to run she would have gone back home. | | | | | | |

| | I used to bring home "lost" pets all the time when I was younger. My mother would always post an ad in the paper for a week and hang fliers on telephone poles around the area where I found the animal. If we didn't get a response in 2 weeks we had a new pet. | | | | | | |

| | I would like to use byfaithonly's response, one week.. And my daughter had talked to a friend who said that she may have been dropped off, in that is the case, no one would be looking for her.. | | | |

| | I would have to say that If this poor dog is so skinny, and is peeing all over, then even if she was owned by someone, they did not take very good care of her and i would say you shouldnt bother to post anything up at all. she would be better off with you!! | | | | | | |

| | We took in a dog that was sick, and while we were trying to find its family we grew attached. Then we found out she was sick. She was so sweet. When I took her to the animal shelter to see if anyone was looking for her, the staff saw how sick she was and says she was probably dumped because she was sick and owners didn't want to take care of her. Also the dog you found may have been lost longer than just the day you found her/him. I agree with the ones that say give it a week. Check animal shelters because it may have a chip in its shoulders that tell who the owners are. We had a fox terrier that could climb our chain link fense. We found out after chasing her down the street a few times. One neighbor returned her once, and another time the shelter called us. | | | |

| | Is there a pound near you? When one of my prior dogs was stolen, I called there to tell them his description in case someone reported finding a dog that looked like him. My sister found a dog, told the pound, and the pound said if no one claimed her in 10 days, the dog was hers. And no one claimed her, so my sister kept the dog. | | | | | | |

| | I dont know the time period on this but its sounds like you doing the right thing. It also sounds like she has never had a home she doesnt sound like shes housebroken. And if she was owned by someone they didnt take very good care of her. she is pretty. | | | | | | |

| | After you have done all you can to find the puppies home one week is normal for claiming the puppy. It sounds like you have a puppy and more than likely he found you for a reason. Welcome to being owned. I have a dog and two cats, they all own the people in the house. Regards, Aingealicia | | | | | | |

| | Your doing a good thing here. Put up signs and an add in the paper. Also call around the local vets and see if anyone reported it missing. I would keep her for two weeks before keeping here as yours. Thats a resonable amount of time for someone to clame her. Good Luck! | | | | | | |

| | My Husband and I had a Similar experience nearly five years ago.Our Friend found him, very neglected looking etc. She posted several signs around the vicinity,an add in the local paper, but first she took him to her vet where it was found he had a microchip. The Gentleman's details were then looked up and he was contacted. The dog he had found two years previously two States away. He had the dog neuted and microchiped, and proceeded to give him a loving home. The dog had other ideas!left two months later, and God only knows how many other owners before settliing in with us. Has escaped several times, always returns. Just doing his Angel work I say.....and seldom takes his eyes off either of us....and we adore him. Good-Luck if she is meant to stay with you she will, I wouldn't put too much concern to it....let it happen. | | | | | | |

| | I think if a dog is handed into a shelter as a stray the shelter will look at re-homing the dog after 7 days. Have you thought of placing a "found" add in the local paper? At least this way you have given the owner a chance to be reunited with the dog. | | | |

| | My husband did ask around the church where he found the dog and this guy who is always there said the dog had been around the building the last few days, so she obviously didn't a place to go.. | | | |

| | I'd say 2 weeks maximum. If no one claims her by then, she is good as yours! Remember when posting "Found" signs, do not add a picture of the dog. Otherwise ANYONE could try to claim her as theirs! God luck! I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for you! :) PS She's a cutie! :) | | | | | | |

| | Yes, my husband thought of that. I said, well if someone wanted to claim her by saying she was theirs, we could ask about a marking on her that only the real owner would know about.. | | | |
