You must teach the dog to walk on a leash before something bad happens.

Your dog must also learn to submit to you, if your dog thinks it can tell you what to do, it will think it is the alpha dog, which could result in a nasty biting dog.

Most problems of that kind seem to come from the dog's education. A dog should get used to it's leash with no problem, experts say, but for that the animal needs to be accustomed to it, and educated so that it finds the leash as something natural. I would consult an specialist if it really worries you.

Memphis is such a cute name for a dog. Have you seen the TV show called The Dog Whisperer? The host has a wonderful website with lots of useful information about how to live with dogs.

His main point is that people often forget dogs are a different species and have very different needs and wants than humans do. He feels that almost all the behavioral problems arise from the human's failure to take charge:

awww, that is sad that Memphis doesn't want to be walked on a leash. there is a leash law here in the State of Tennessee. my family and i have an inside female dog, and she minds pretty good when outside in the yard not on a leash. but i hear ya, i sure wouldn't want her to get hit by a moving vehicle either. and there is always obiedence school to train your dog. a couple of classes of that, and i am sure Memphis would be ready to go for a walk with that leash on. but yeah, my female dog, Doughnut, loves to go for walks with the leash. she gets so thrilled to get to go somewhere with me or the kids.

Puppies need to be train. Try to give her treat any time you are placing collar on her. She needs to associate good thing happening when on leash....
This is what I would do.

Do you attach the leash to a collar, or a harness? My dog hated to walk on a leash until I bought a harness. The leash hooks to it and he walks just fine. No pulling on his neck has to be a relief.

When we had our two dogs Spike would freak out with the leash but Zoey would get so hyper you could barely put it on her. I think that if you had the time and energy you could smooth this situation out a little. Take one of your other dogs and Memphis into your bedroom away from the other dogs. And put the leash on the dog that likes it and give him/her a treat with lots of praises and love. Then try to mimic the sinerio with Memphis. And finally after you can get Memphis on the leash with hopefully no negitive feedback you can take him and his compainion on a short walk just down the block. And agian praise them with love and treats untill you finally can walk the dogs together. Then start incorperating the other dogs. I don't know how many you have. It's going to take along time but that's how Spike mostly got over it. Every once in a while she would freak out and then she just wouldn't get to go on a walk. Hope it helps.

I have the same exact problem with my 8 month old Malti-Poo(Maltese/Poodle). Harley hates the leash and stops dead in his tracks. Then if I try to make him walk on it, he goes crazy. I do not know what to do. The vet suggested to put the leash on him in the house and let him run around the house with it on to get him use to it. First, you have to catch him to do it but he still wants no part of it.

Any suggestions?

if she doesn't wear a collar start her off by making her wear one,

that is step one,

two put the leash on the collar and let just walk around the house with it,

three, when she is comfortable walking around by herself with it, you take the lead and walk her around the house,

four take her outside hold the leash but don't walk a few times until she is not nervous anymore

five, start walk slowly just a little bit

six walk anywhere with her.

this is called successful approximation
