I am going TO the pictures with my TWO friends, would you like TO come TOO? Confused yet? Same word but different meanings, they are called homonyms but they can be so confusing, especially to small ones and our friends to whom English is a second language.
Imagine this sentence when you have trouble with English in the first place ....The man with BARE feet sat sipping a cool BEER while he watched a BEAR playing in the water. His BEER glass was sitting on a BIER (coffin stand) Hey, even I am getting confused now! So when our friends who are not familiar with our natural tongue make slip-ups when they are writing their discussions, go easy on them please. To us English speaking people writing the English language is a natural but to some people it is a very difficult language to understand and to master so give them a break, empathise with them because the shoe could easily be on the other foot, it could be you who is new to a language or a place.

I have always heard that english is the hardes language there is to learn becaue we have so many words that can mean more than one thing and alot of words like in your sentence about beer and bear and bare are so close to each other.
Just like you can say I have some friends who are really cool but it can also go the ice cube was cool to the touch.
I wish anyone who is trying to understand the english language good luck.

The word(no pun intended) for the day concerning ESL and
posting in forum, etc., is kindness and empathy. Same
sounding words are hard enough, not to mention commonly
used phrases like shoe on the other foot, sauce for the
goose, pay the piper, eggs in one basket, etc., etc.,
etc,. We take so much for granted since we have grown
up hearing many of these phrases all of our lives.

Indeed. It is hard to learn a language that isn't really native to you. Even when you attend schools that utilize that medium of communication in order to teach lessons, then again, most classes find it convenient than using terms with their native language. Such terms like mathematical equations are hard to translate into our own language.

I often have more convenience on saying words that I don't know how to spell.

Aside from school, I've always appreciated movies with clear dialogues and not those with abbreviated lines.

Thank you for your response my friend. Is English the native language for you or have you had to learn it. Being from the New Zealand we have many different languages spoken here and I admire those who try to master our language. As a person from an English speaking country a new language would be difficult to speak, hey I have enough problems with TeReo (Maori)and so I appreciate how difficult it must be for other people to learn English. Thanks for your response and have a great day.

Well your welcome^0^

Your topic was quite interesting so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of responses came up for it.

New Zealand huh? I've always think of milk when New Zealand is mentioned. I didn't mean that in a bad way in case its offending anybody, alright? I'd blame commercials for that. I know there's more to New Zealand than milk.

Anyway, getting back on topic.

No, english isn't a native language here in our country. I'm from the Philippines by the way and I am so embarrassed but, I know more english words than my own filipino language^_^; People here only do the colloquial medium of our language since you'd be labelled as a deep thinking person, which isn't bad but still holds its awkward status, and not the hard core native language which I regret on not knowing more on.

Yeah, since its what they call the "universal medium" to communicate on.. even though I haven't heard anyone from other planets to state it wrong since, "universal" would include those from outer space... but then again, that's just my opinion out loud. Nothing to be taken serious for, what-so-ever.^_^

I wish I knew how to read Japanese too:P

english is a nice language, there are a lot of words to use to express anything you like to say.
and what you said is true. when you speak words with the same sound but different meaning it is more confusing than reading it. like "i see the sea from here." it is more confusing if you just heard it than read it yourself. nice discussion.

Thanks for your response my friend, i see you like Shrek too, it is such a cool movie and there are some great words of wisdom in the original film. one that comes to mind is "know me before you judge me" how profound and certainly something that we should take to heart.

Well what you wrote can be a learning tool.

We can also learns from sight - to see and site - a location both in real life or internet.
And we lose things - this is a verb and loose means that thing are not tight.
And we seek advice - a noun but we advise a verb

We can turn MyLot into a no child left behind site.

you are absolutely right, some people on here are very critical and forget that there are many here who are not english by birth and english may be their second or even third language.

Yes, some people are confused with the same-sounded-words of different meanings and so often use the wrong words in a sentence. We sometimes see that here in myLot. Well, we have to understand that not all myLotters are very good in english, count me as one of them, so I sometimes use wrong words and mispelled the words. This is naturally true with those whose native language is not english, but even some english speaking people also make mistakes in spelling and proper use of grammar. Added to this is the onset of SMS or text messaging, when short cuts to words and phrases is written in the mobile phones, thus worsening the correct spelling of words and proper use of grammar.
