ever heard of a puffer fish?  email this discussion to a friend?

hello all of my good friends here at Mylot!

have you-all ever heard of a Puffer Fish? sometimes called a Blow Fish? haha a blow fish?

i was playing Casino Island Blackjack on pogo's website last night and i reached rank 36 and the picture for that rank is a puffer fish.

Tetraodontidae is a family of primarily marine and estuarine fish. The family includes many familiar species which are variously called puffers, balloonfish, blowfish, bubblefish, globefish, swellfish, toadfish, and toadies. They are morphologically similar to the closely related porcupinefish, which have large conspicuous spines (unlike the small, almost sandpaper-like spines of Tetraodontidae). The scientific name, Tetraodontidae, refers to the four large teeth, fused into an upper and lower plate, which are used for crushing the shells of crustaceans and mollusks, their natural prey.

so tell me, have you ever heard of or seen a puffer fish before?

thanks for sharing!

here is a picture of what a puffer or a blow fish

Not only have I heard of the blowfish, that is what my family call it, but we have caught them also. They are so weird and strange to see when they puff up like they do. We take them off the hook and throw them back in the water.

myLot reputation of 93/100. RLFinNash (5720)  5 years ago

hello tyc

i would love to see a real blowfish. sounds like they got some sharp teeth thou. so they are salt water fish then. wonder if a person could catch one and put it in an aquarium? and that is awesome that you-all catch the blowfish like that.

thanks for responding.

I just noticed I put "we" would take them off the hook, wrong, I wouldn't touch those things to take them off. hahaha
Mostly they are salt water fish, they do have some that are fresh water and some that need a little bit of salt in the water.

Yea, I have heard of it before. It's really amazing that it can transform it self into a bubble with horns!:) haha I have a "gladiator fish" at home. This little fellow, likes to live alone, with no other fish since it eats them! The only time he accepts a fish in its aquarium bowl is when it is mating season. But then when the female spreads the eggs to be fertilized, it should be immediately removed because the one will eat the other. Weird nature huh?

myLot reputation of 93/100. RLFinNash (5720)  5 years ago

hello eftychiap

yes nature sure is a weird thing. and i have never heard of a gladiator fish either. how big is he? and yes, i would love to see a real blowfish, swell out and grow horns! lol.

Yup...its a very famous poisonous fish..

And of course, its also quite a common Japanese dish, Japanese Sashimi...though it must be cut by specialist chef who knows how to remove the poison promptly...

myLot reputation of 93/100. RLFinNash (5720)  5 years ago

hello chunter

oh my gosh! sounds like this little blowfish is very mean then. haha i did not know that the blowfish was poisonous. and in the Japanese dish, is the fish cooked or is it eaten raw, like sushi is? thanks.

myLot reputation of 93/100. RLFinNash (5720)  5 years ago

hello carolbee

lol. the puffer fish is also poisonous. :0
sounds like this little fish is pretty darn mean. i would like to have a blowfish in an aquarium. that fish would be a good conversation topic when friends came over to visit. right?

Yep, you can find them in some pet stores. I never had a saltwater aquarium so I never got any.

myLot reputation of 34/100. zukepr (11761)  5 years ago

did you know.....
there are actually a couple of kinds of fresh water puffers?

myLot reputation of 91/100. uath13 (4698)   ranked 948 out of 27,455 in mylot.com  5 years ago

If I ever get another tank I'll have to look for them.

myLot reputation of 93/100. RLFinNash (5720)  5 years ago

hello uath

hum, i have never seen them in PetCo before. that is usually where that i go to shop. i do not have a tank but my brother has a tropical fish tank and it is awesome. it is a pretty good size tank as well. i do not know how many gallons that it is thou.

thanks for responding.

myLot reputation of 91/100. uath13 (4698)   ranked 948 out of 27,455 in mylot.com  5 years ago

Petco is kinda generic. You need to go to the aquatic critter on Nolensville Pike for the rarer ones. They have all kinds of fish , tanks & such. I've seen the puffers there but didn't notice any freshwater versions. I'll have to check next time I get down there.

myLot reputation of 93/100. RLFinNash (5720)  5 years ago

i have never been to aquatic criters before but i know where it is at. thanks for the information

Not only have I heard of them but I used to have a couple in my aquarium
I had a couple of green puffers
they didnt do so well in captivity and they were mean little buggers!
They ate at my other fish

the green puffer. what a mean little nasty fish

myLot reputation of 93/100. RLFinNash (5720)  5 years ago

hello zukepr

oh no! so sorry to hear that your green puffers ate all of your other fish. so they need to be in a tank by themselves then. that would be awsome to have several of them in a tank together. sounds like these little fish are mean.

thanks for responding.

yes this fish is deadly... i saw it featured on tv about how Japanese people eat it and only licensed chefs can actually serve it... there are some cases that customers choke and die because of the poison... talk about exotic (more like toxic) delicacies! ;)

XOXOX

Of course I have heard of a puffer fish. Isn't Sponge Bob's driving teacher a puffer fish. Yeah her name is Mrs. Puff.
Weird defense mechanism for a fish 'eh?

Hello RLF,

We used to play with toad fish (puffer fish) when we were kids.
We would roll them on the sand with our thongs, and watch them puff up.
The stupid things we did as kids.

myLot reputation of 93/100. RLFinNash (5720)  5 years ago

hello goodie

lol i hear ya, you-all could have played with anything else on that beach in the sand besides the puffer fish! well as of to my knowledge, i have never seen a real puffer fish before. would love to have an aquarium with them in it.

thanks for responding.
