How a dog, becomes an outside dog |
| |
| I always thought that a dog that is an outdoor dog, was trained that way. Well the new dog we have now, considering she is probably just over 2 months old, you would think she would welcome the chance to be inside as much as possible..Granted today and yesterday was in the upper 40's, but before that we were in the lower 30's and yet, whenever I let the dog in, within 5-10 minutes, she wants back out. So yesterday and today, since it was warmer, I just put her outside all day. I would check on her once in a while and feed her, but she just seems to be happy outside. It is kind of disappointing though, I was looking forward to having a dog inside and when we leave and over night she is inside, but other than that, she prefers outside.. So are some dogs just born to want to be outside all day? | | | | | |

| | I guess dogs have their preferences, just like people! Maybe your yard is more interesting that your house to her. Get her some neat toys to keep indoors, and spend time playing with her, and maybe she will decide inside is good, too. | | | | | | |

| | I did think of that, since she's a puppy and so we got her a ball and I would throw it down the hall, then she would bring it back and chew on it for a while..Then when she wanted out, she would have that ball in her mouth like she wanted to take it outside and play.. | | | |

| | You didn't say what kind of dog in this post, maybe in a prev one. Yes, some dogs are outdoor dogs. I have had two samoyeds in my life and I have had to physically put them in the basement on sub-zero days. They still protested! Too bad, that's too cold even for them. Esp. with wind blowing at 30 to 60 miles per hour up here. They were hysterical, too. I almost jumped out of my skin once, a pile of snow moved, stood-up and shook itself off to reveal a dog! I loved them and they were great for a kid, I always wanted to go out and play outdoors with my dog. Take care | | | | | | |

| | You know, writer, I forgot, some dogs are bred for very cold weather. This dog is a white German Shepherd and she does have a very thick coat.. So no way to make her an indoor dog??? | | | |

| | Maybe you should become an outdoor owner. If she's an all white dog with a thick coat, and you're in a cold to cool area, that would be the first set of clues. Siberians are also outdoor dogs. My cat was an outdoor cat, but as he gets older, he's becoming an indoor one. REal cold (most animals), age and time are the only things that I've seen make outdoor animals want to come in. But I read the idea of lots of fun toys in the house and that seems promising. But if they see squirrels and fun things outdoors, . . .. | | | |

| | I think all dogs can get used to being inside if that's all they know. If they only know how to be inside, they'll get used to it. Try keeping her inside more and IMO at least, she won't want to go out and stay out as much. I let mine out when it's pretty outside, but for the most part, they are all inside dogs. | | | | | | |

| | Except certain dogs that writer above mentioned. Like a Husky, they would be an outdoor dog because they can't take it if it is too warm.. | | | |

| | Yes, the real challenge was the 90 degree days in July. Glad we had a basement, poor dogs would have roasted to death. | | | |

| | I think some dogs love to be outside. We have had several dogs over the years and different types of breeds. All of of the bigger dogs we had, were hunting dogs and they loved to be outside, rather than in the house. My smaller dogs always liked to be inside because we raised to be domestic. | | | | | | |

| | We had a dalmatian, but I guess because of her short hair, she loved the inside..:) | | | |

| | Yes. that could be very well possible. We have always owned Pomeranians and he has alot of hair. He likes to be outside at times but most of the time he begs to be inside. He is domestic and we always keep him in our home. | | | |

| | All dogs are outside dogs. It is just that the nervous small ones want to stay inside. From a dog's perspective it is so interesting seeing all those wonderful things outside and besides they want to protect their owners and the best way for them to do it is to sit outside and bark at the neighbors going by. Don't worry about that, put some toys and a ball outside, and make sure that the gate is closed so she does not run off. You could get one of those pet doors made so she can run in and out when she gets hungry and thirsty. | | | | | | |

| | She is on a dog run in the back yard, no neighbors to bark at unless they go there.. As for the doggie door, my husband won't allow it, we lose too much energy going outside from the door..Plus it would be another job for him, he still hasn't put my light fixture back in my closet..lol | | | |

| | im not sure, maybe you have great weather? i would much rather have an outside dog.. they stink up your house no matter how clean you keep it. as soon as i walk into a home with a dog/cat,, i can smell it immediately. im really not mean, just don't care to share my home with an animal. | | | | | | |

| | Well if you keep the pet clean, your house doesn't stink. Same with kids..lol Anyways, below freezing is not my idea of great weather, even when I am bundled up, I prefer the summer than the winter.. | | | |

| | Yeah, I found out that she doesn't like rain and isn't able to get out of it on the dog run, so when we had the rain/sleet and snow the last few days, she has been wanting in..So maybe she will become an indoor dog after all which I am hoping because she really can't guard our house being outside..:) | | | |

| | I'm guessing you just keep showing her love and attention and in time she'll figure out it's pretty nice being inside where she can get more of 'the good stuff' she'd been missing or didn't even know. | | | |

| | I do think there are some dogs that prefer to stay outside, like huskies, finnish lapphunds and breeds like those that have the coat to tolerate cold weather, but I wouldn't leave a puppy outside unsupervised for any length of time and I wouldn't make a german shepherd an outside dog either. Dogs are pack animals and should be with their people. Make sure she gets plenty of outdoor activities with you and then keep her inside the rest of the time, she'll come around eventually. | | | | | | |

| | Thank you Seraphine, though she has a thick coat, my friend had a shepherd that was indoors, so I didn't think it had to do with her breed..She doesn't like the rain, so she has been inside more the last few days and I am happy, I want her to be an indoor dog..:) | | | |
