"We don't want to see that! It's about homosexuals! |
|
Recently my partner and I went to see the play "The Good-Bye Girl". I was going to the ladies room when I overheard one older woman say that to her friends. They were looking at the posters of upcoming plays. Apparently, one is about homosexuals. I don't know the name of it. I just kind of brushed it off for the day. But, it got me thinking. Why wouldn't they want to see a play about homosexuality? I mean, it isn't porn. It is about the lives of men, albeit homosexual men. God forbid they may learn something about these men and learn they are actually not very different from "straight" men. They have jobs, feelings, family, hardships, values, goals, etc.,etc.,etc. Are they afraid if they went to this play they might learn that homosexuals are actually not as "bad" as they thought they were? Do you think they want to be kept in the "dark" and not learn this? Any thoughts?

1. Adoniah (1734) | 7 months ago | It is a matter of preconceived notions. They have made up their minds about a subject and that is that. Even if they sat through the play, especially if they saw it together, they would come out of it feeling the same way as they did when they went in. Predjudiced against! They would not come out "enlightened" in anyway. This is why prejudice and racism and bigotry continue to exist. It takes a good swift two by four between the eyes sometimes to get people to wake up to the fact that they need to change. You just have to find the right two by four it seems that they aren't one size fits all. Shalom~Adoniah

fpd1955 (1234) | 7 months ago | Prejudice, racism and bigotry are tough nuts to crack. I never thought of using a two by four. I usually try to talk to people about things and usually end up blue in the face. I walk away before I biatch slap them. While I would like to actually take out my frustrations with their attitudes by hitting them, I am afraid it would just make matters worse. Then they would probably spread the word that homosexuals are a violent bunch!! PEACE

4. dumblnddzzy (8818) | 7 months ago | With the 'older' generation there is no changing their minds about anything that was so 'taboo' in there day.Even if they were to watch this play about homosexuals, it wouldn't change their mind one bit...They are too set in their ways...Lori

fpd1955 (1234) | 7 months ago | Unfortunately, it is not just the "older" generation that have closed minds. The only good news is that maybe the younger ones are a bit more open to learning the truths about homosexuality. PEACE

| jjasmine (58) | 7 months ago | my partner and I befriended an 80 year old nun about 3years ago and we do not even belong to any church. Our relationship with her has been based on similar interests, points of view, etc.. after that she has been our biggest supporter ever since. I do agree with the point "putting a face"...

fpd1955 (1234) | 7 months ago | It is true. We do watch movies and plays and tv shows about straight people all the time. I must say, I don't watch anything that I don't thoroughly enjoy. I am shaking my head right along with you. PEACE

fpd1955 (1234) | 7 months ago | My Mom was the same way in her prejudices. Actually, so were my siblings. That was, until I came out to them. They are all very cordial to me and any of my friends they meet, but two of my brothers and their wives keep their distance. You know, they might "catch" something. My partner and I were having a little argument about something and Mom said, "Gosh, you two sound just like a married couple." I told her that is exactly what we are, only not legally! Lack of understanding and the unwillingness to learn more about something make for bad company. What a great movie. We watch it at least once a year. I think I cry harder each time I see it. Changing people's attitudes one person at a time is the way to start. It's just too bad there are so many attitudes that need changing! PEACE

| 8. davis0514 (21) | 7 months ago | It could be that they they just didn't want to watch the movie. Just like I might say that I wouldn't want to watch a horror movie or a sci-fi movie. Especially if I have to pay $8-$10 bucks at the theatre. If I'm going to pay that much I'd rather watch something I really like. Obviously, I wasn't there and didn't here the conversation but maybe you are reading into it a little too much.

fpd1955 (1234) | 7 months ago | It is not a movie, it is a play. Sorry, but a play about homosexuals doesn't truly compare to one with horror or sci-fi. Those are fiction and homosexuality is reality. It was the realness of their distaste for homosexuals that disturbed me. As you said, you were not there and did not see their facial expressions when the woman made her comment. Thanks for responding. PEACE

9. sid556 (4781) | 7 months ago | It could be for any of the reasons that you listed or it could be simply that they just are not interested in watching that particular type of movie. "brokeback mountain" was about homosexuals. I read the book and while I found it did have a decent story line, I was not compelled to go see the movie. I did not learn anything new about homosexuality at all from it. I know and am friends with many and my viewpoint is that they are just people with lifestyles that differ from mine. I would not imagine that they would get any big thrill out of watching a hetrosexual love story either ....whats to learn really. its all about what you can relate to i think. if education is what you are looking for, the movies is a pretty costly and not always accurate place to go....it is hollywood after all.
