I Hate Moving email this discussion to a friend?

I write a weekly column for my paper. I wanted to share this one with you. It's called: I Hate Moving.

I hate moving.
I hate it with a passion.
I'd rather have teeth pulled sans Novocain than pack up all my stuff and move.
I hate moving because I have too much stuff.
I have too much stuff because I never throw anything away.
I never throw anything away because the moment I do I'll need it.
Actually it plays out that I'll need it two days after I throw it away and right after the garbage man has picked up trash or I've dumped wet coffee grounds on it.
So, not only do I not throw anything away, I don't put anything away either.
The same rule of reasoning applies: The minute I put something away I immediately need it, even though that same object might have sat untouched for six months prior to my putting it away. The minute I put it away I will need it.
There's a kicker: The minute I put something away it becomes forever lost.
It is never seen or heard from again.
They'll find Amelia Earhart and Jimmy Hoffa first.
I have things that have been lost since fourth grade simply because I put them away. I must have everything I own out in plain sight and within arm's reach.
Call it OCD with an ADD twist of lime.
I moved from the North Georgia mountains to the South Carolina Lwcountry over the holidays. It looks like I brought the cold weather with me.
I got out of my car, packed to the windows with my stuff. All that separated me from Jed Clampett was having Granny tied down to the hatchback in her rocker.
What is it about mankind and our need to accumulate stuff?
We surround ourselves with our stuff.
It's not just some of the stuff we want, but all the stuff, as much as we can carry, and the best stuff too.
Better than the Joneses, that's for sure.
We buy furniture and such -- more stuff in fact on which to display our stuff for all to see.
We're proud of our stuff -- almost boastful at times. "My stuff is bigger than your stuff," or "My stuff costs more than your stuff," or "My stuff is prettier than your stuff."
Sometimes our stuff isn't any of the above and we covet someone else's stuff to the point that we need to take it and keep it for ourselves.
Wars have been fought over such stuff.
Sometimes our stuff outlives us and is passed down to our kids and grandkids. They become antiques and heirlooms. Brothers and sisters will fight over mom and dad's stuff and sometimes go as far as file lawsuits over who gets to have certain stuff.
I learned this about myself early on in life: I am a pack rat. I have been a pack rat for fifty years now.
Until I had to move.
Because I don't want to store my stuff in boxes that once held paper towels, toilet paper or chicken noodle soup, I went out and bought close to $60 in boxes in which to store my stuff just to show you what kind of an idiot I am.
We never realize just how much stuff we have accumulated over the years until it comes time to pack up our stuff and move it.
Then we realize the boxes of stuff we call mementos that we've held onto since fourth grade, well, because we've kept it this long we can't just up and throw it away now is taking up way too much room in the moving truck.
Don't dare try to throw it away, and don't dare throwing it away where your mother can see it. You might as well cut out her heart with a spoon because you just broke it.
I have things like an old bathrobe, plaid, and not necessarily a good bathrobe either, book reports, astronomy reports, trophies, my sisters' Barbie dolls (don't ask me why I have them), old baseballs, and stuff that so defies any standard description that it crosses the line of what you call stuff and becomes junk.
But I won't throw it away.
I can't.
I might need that Swiss Army knife some day.
Hard to imagine what situation I'd find myself in where I'd need a Philips head screwdriver, a butter knife, fingernail clippers, scissors and a wine cork all at the same time.
Even McGyver would have a hard time getting out of that pickle.
One thing I discovered about my stuff.
Once I had to move it, that stuff suddenly ceased being sentimental.
In fact, there's this little equation I came up with during the five hour drive from there to here that put most all my stuff into proper perspective: The sentimental value of a given object is inversely related to how many times you are willing to move it.
That's when my stuff ceased being stuff, even ceased being junk and became garbage.
Garbage that I packed, loaded, drove 325 miles, unloaded and unpacked simply to put out with next Monday's trash.
Which will be pilfered through on Sunday night by my next door neighbor who will up and spy that old Swiss Army knife in the dumpster, pick it up, wipe off the wet coffee grounds and say, "Why, this isn't garbage. This junk makes for some pretty good stuff."
While one man's trash won't necessarily make another man's treasure, it'll certainly add to his collection of stuff.

I hate moving too.
My stuff have been more and more, even I told myself not to buy too much thing because I may move to another city one day.
When I leave I think it is better to sell them, and it is also a headache for me to move in the same city.

Ha ha....my parents are the same way, especially my Dad. There is nothing at all that he'll throw out, as I discovered when we moved into our new house when I was 12. It was also wehn I first learned the term "pack rat", used by my uncle when he observed this entire phenomenon of my Dad taking everything with him, up to and including one of our kitchen sinks.

Me, i try to stay a lightweight. I moved to Washington, DC, with 1 suitcase. Unfortunately, by the time I left 7 years later and plus one husband, we needed a moving van to get our stuff out and into our new home. Now, if we had to move, we'd probably need several moving vans! And that's even without one of our bedrooms being furnished.

Buddhists believe that excess stuff weighs down our souls, making us slaves to this life. We increasingly lose out on happiness by our attachment to material possessions. In part, they are right.

Great discussion, ORyans. I think we are all(or at least most) of us guilty of hoarding stuff. The difference is that there are those who are unashamed to admit it. I am a lifelong packrat too, and proud of it. It nearly caused me physical pain when I relocated to my tiny apartment 6 years ago and had to get rid of so much of my stuff. I still, however, managed to bring along much more than anyone ever thought possible. I've become very good at finding nooks and crannies in which to place all of my stuff. Can you imagine how delighted I was when, after living in my tiny apartment nearly a full year, one of my granddaughters discovered a tiny closet behind my bedroom door(I never knew it was back there because I was so unused to being on my own that I never closed my bedroom door, lol). Now, if you're guessing that this find gave me a whole new place to put more stuff -you're absolutely right! Life is good.

Good story and very true. I do hate moving as well but with each move I become more brutal with my stuff...lol. It is nearly down to a manageable level now...all except for my books that is...lol.

Funny but sadly true - every thing here is true and happens to me every time I move. I too hate moving and as much as I try to avoid it the horrid thing keeps happening to me. In my lifetime the longest I've lived in one home was 9 years - I owned a home for 22 years but moved out of state for a few years and rented it out, moving back into it eventually. I've now moved twice in the last year and can't find anything at all:(

My home is stuffed with stuff as well. My stuff, my first hubby's stuff, my son's stuff (he is married and gone), my sister who is deceased stuff, my sister who lives with my niece stuff, my son's friend who was homeless, stuff, she has since moved on with another friend, Oh, and did I mention my stuff? My daughter has moved and traveled enough that she is not really attached to her stuff. Except she did ask me at Christmas if any of the old children's books she left for me to get rid of are around, she would like her two year old to enjoy them. Chances are they are buried in the stuff. I never could throw away books.

I should add that current hubby is a packrat, plus we have stuff that was his dad's (dead for 20 years) I have my Mom's stuff, my Aunt's stuff (she is dead, her daughter did not want to have anything to do with her mom.) Lucky I have a big house. I feel disoriented in people's houses that do not have stuff.

Ry, you just told my life story!
I have moved roughly 30 times in my life, and it sucks.
I too am a packrat for the same reason: as soon as i put it up, give it away or toss it, I need it right way.
Currently I my old office is being remodeled into a hot tub room, so everything stored in that room and in the closet that used to be in that room is currently in my living room. My hubs' birthday is tomorrow--needless to say there will be no party now. Talk about boxes! I have a dozen boxes and several bags of nothing but Barbie stuff. The rest is old books, school work (both mine and the kid's) worthy of keeping to use in future need of reference, baskets of "missing" clothes, vinyl albums, "lost" beauty supplies, etc. I know that isn't the same as moving, but I dread sorting through it and moving from room to room (or out to the shed) just the same...I forgot to mention my great grandfather's desk and chair that I no longer have room for & won't part with...anyhoo...I've put my foot down. We will NOT move again before the kid graduates. Period.
...now I just hope life doesn't end up making a liar out of me, lol. I like Fairmount. I really don't want to leave until it's time to put up stakes somewhere warm.

Anyhoo, I sympathize, as that aspect of my life mirrors yours: Too Much Stuff!!!

i can't agree more with you... that is so true... we acquire so much stuffs over the time and most of them that we don't really need... that just shows how consumerism has hit us so badly... we even go to the extent of buying stuffs that are beyond our budget and ended up in huge debts... i myself am a victim of one... but fortunately, i can still say that i am not too bad... i can still control myself and i try to only buy stuffs that i really need... i don't want to collect junks in my house... interesting discussions...

You sure described me. Moving has helped me get rid of things. Each time I move I try and decide if I really want to pay for moving the item. I am told that you save up until you are 60ty then you start trying to get rid of it. I still have a 1982 Chevy out in my backyard that is just taking up space. I know that if we move again I will have to either sell it or give it away so I don't want to move.
